  2. 'We didn't create the chances'published at 10:55 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate on his tactics for the final against Italy:

"We picked a team because of the tactical problem Italy posed. I think for the first 45 minutes, people would agree, that worked.

"Italy are always going to have possession but we were actually controlling the ball for long periods. We couldn't keep the ball as well in the second half. They went for a false nine for a period of time, which was difficult. It was a difficult to solve.

"We didn't create the chances we would have liked to. There are lots of things we want to reflect on, but I wouldn't be giving a proper appraisal until I watch the match back fully."

  3. 'Cycle starts again'published at 10:52 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate on how the squad feel the morning after:

"When you're in sport and you get to finals, those opportunities are so rare, so to be close, it's very hard the day after. You have given everything - the emotions are drained.

"We will go again. It's too easy to say we can go to the World Cup in Qatar and win - that's a bit glib. We still have to qualify, we still have to win. You have to start the cycle again.

"But to be able to work with these players every day has been fantastic, so when it comes to the end like it has now, it's hard."

  4. 'A joy to work with'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

    More from the England boss:

"There was a long period in the dressing room last night and the players then went to meet their families across the road. I'm told they had a nice evening together.

"I wanted to thank them all for what they have given. They have been a joy to work with and totally unselfish in their outlook. I'm tremendously grateful for that and I know the country is. They will all head on their way now. They need a break and a rest."

  5. 'England overcame hurdles'published at 10:47 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Gareth Southgate is asked whether England as a team are too nice:

"You're not a nice team to get to a final. We overcame a lot of hurdles that we haven't in the past. We have a lot of players who are inexperienced at an international level - and they performed incredibly.

"We have beaten Germany and we have taken Italy, who are unbeaten in 33 games, right to the wire. If we had been torn apart... but we performed well."

  6. 'Feels like my stomach has been ripped out'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

More from Southgate: "If you want sustained success as a team, you need to be constantly evolving, improving and constantly finishing in latter stages of tournaments.

"It feels like my stomach has been ripped out this morning. But the fact we have had the first signs of some consistency - a World Cup semi-final and a Euro final - has to be a step in the right direction."

  7. Pickford has been 'outstanding'published at 10:43 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

The England boss is asked about goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's performances at Euro 2020:

"I thought he had a brilliant tournament. There are a lot of players that come into that category. Jordan's place in the team has been questioned but he has constantly delivered for us.

"He had a really outstanding tournament."

  8. 'My staff are very special'published at 10:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate is asked about his backroom staff and the role they played in the run to the final:

"I am very fortunate to lead some incredible staff. All of our staff in all areas are special people. That is why we have been able to create the culture we have.

"The work in the background is phenomenal. I have to highlight Steve Holland - a phenomenal man and a a phenomenal coach."

  9. 'Always learning'published at 10:36 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate on what he can learn from the final:

"You're always learning as a manager. I've now managed some of the biggest games in world football. They take you across an incredible rollercoaster. You never get them all right. Sometimes you win in matches despite those decisions. It's all part of learning.

"You are always going to learn and that process is never ending, really. I need to watch the game back. So much has happened in that two hours of the game. To go through the whole timeline now, too much has gone on for me to reflect properly. But that's what we will do."

  10. 'This team can go again'published at 10:35 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

The England boss is asked about the younger players of his squad:

We've wanted for a long time to make playing for England fun and enjoyable. I think they have had a fabulous experience, they have loved one another's company. It's a club-like spirit. All this team can go again - there is no doubt about that.

  11. 'National team stands for everybody'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate on the abuse players have received following the final defeat:

"I'm not totally across everything but my first thoughts this morning are with the boys that have done so well for us. The players have had such a great togetherness and spirit and brought our country together,

"For some of them to be abused is unforgivable. Some of it has come from abroad, we have been told this, but some of it is from this country. We have been a beacon of light to bring people together and the national team stands for everybody.

"We felt the energy and positivity from the fans and I'm incredibly proud of that."

  12. 'I need a rest'published at 10:26 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    England

Southgate is asked about the possibility of signing a new contract:

"I don't think now is an appropriate time to be thinking about it. We have to qualify for Qatar. I need time to go away and reflect on Euro 2020. I need a rest.

"To lead your country in these tournaments takes its toll. I don't want to commit to anything longer than I should. It's not a financial thing. As I sit here today. I would be wanting to take the team to Qatar."

Impassioned England fan Julian called 606 to say he was "sick to his core" at the racism abuse on social media.

“I’m sick of it – cowards hiding behind their Twitter platforms… I just wanted to call up and lend my support… I’m a 49-year-old white man and I just wanted to say I'm so proud of the team."When are these people going to wake up - and when are we going to shut them down?

"We should be talking about how good we’ll be at the World Cup in 18 months time… but we can’t sweep it under the carpet. We’ve got to lobby harder, we’ve got to win this battle because how bad must the players be feeling this morning? These brave guys... I’m just sick of it. This is my overwhelming emotion this morning… it started off as pride in the country, pride in these guys, pride in Gareth Southgate - and now I feel sick to the core.”

Leroy Rosenior is former professional footballer and manager - and is an ambassador for Show Racism The Red Card.

He has been telling BBC Radio 5 Live that Boris Johnson needs to take a stronger stand against racism.

Rosenior praised the players for how they have stood up against racism and for how they have come together as a team.

"These people have put their necks on their line, no matter what their colour, no matter where they've come from, no matter where they were brought up," he said.

"They've done it as a group of people. I'm absolutely fed up with people just pointing the figure and saying, 'they shouldn't do this,' because they've done more than anything to bring people together," he said.
