  5. 'Bigger occasions to come'published at 16:47 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

A little bit more now from Ben Stokes...

After Stokes and England suffered defeat in the World T20 final five years ago, how do you bounce back from sporting heartbreak?

"You look at where they have gone over the last two years things managed to achieve. They are such a young team they have so much more time on their hands to go and win trophies for England," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Never has an England team been so exciting to watch. I am not massively into my football like some of the other lads are but I have watched every time they have walked out onto the field and they are such an exciting team to watch at the moment.

"They will be devastated and it will probably hurt for a few more weeks but once they are over it and able to have an understanding of what they are able to achieve there will be a lot bigger occasions to come for those guys no doubt."

  6. 'Absolute legends'published at 16:44 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

Lots of big names from the world of sport have come out in support of the Three Lions.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes knows exactly what the highs and lows of top-level sport feel like.

Stokes, who was part of the England cricket team that lost the 2016 World T20 final but went on to win the 50-over World Cup in 2019, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think they will be absolutely devastated but what they have managed to achieve is incredible.

"The nation has been completely captured by what they have done on the field. Everyone would have loved to see England win but just watching the games you feel a real connection to the team the way Gareth has led and speaks.

"I think he has been phenomenal in everything he has done. Us as a national team, albeit in different sports, are just incredibly proud of what they have managed to do. They are such a young team full of talent the sky is the limit. In my eyes and everyone else's in this changing room they are absolute legends already."

  7. 'The save of his life'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

For a split second after Jordan Pickford palmed away Jorginho's penalty effort, we all thought it was coming home, right?

Sadly, it wasn't meant to be for the Three Lions, but two spot kick saves by the Everton goalkeeper in a major tournament final was a definite plus point on a sombre night.

"He looked like he enjoyed that pressure," former England defender Rio Ferdinand said. "He was very animated, he wanted to be the hero.

"At the end of the day, he done all he could do."

  8. 'Hold your head high'published at 16:34 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

Jordan Pickford will probably receive plenty of plaudits when he arrives back at Goodison Park this summer.

There is a great close up clip of the Everton goalkeeper preparing himself to face Jorginho during the penalty shootout last night.

As the Italy midfielder places the ball down to take what could be the winning spot kick, Pickford gives himself a quick pep talk, nods his head and says "no problem" as Jorginho gets ready to shoot for glory.

And of course, he saved it.

  9. 'I hope I can repay you'published at 16:31 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

Jack Grealish has already tweeted today to clarify that he did step forward and offer to take one of the crucial spot kicks against Italy in the final last night.

And now the Aston Villa captain is back again to says he is "absolutely devastated" at the outcome and hope he can "repay" the fans for all their support over the last seven weeks.

Italy 1-1 England (aet: Italy win 3-2 on pens)

At one minute 57 seconds, Luke Shaw's opener - his first ever goal for England - was the quickest-ever goal scored in the final of the European Championship.

It was also England’s quickest ever in the competition overall and the earliest Italy have ever conceded in the competition.

In the age of social media and 24/7 news channels, it's actually quite refreshing to find someone who genuinely didn't know the England score this morning.

Three Lions fan, James, from Nottingham, went to bed early in his houseboat last night and missed the game.

He was on his way to buy a paper when he was stopped by an East Midlands Today reporter who broke the bad news…

Jude Bellingham has tweeted "more needs to be done" after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were targeted with racial abuse after England's Euro defeat.

The 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder said: "We win together and we lose together. So proud to have teammates with such top character. Takes huge **** just to volunteer. As for the racism, hurtful but not surprising. Will never get bored of saying that more needs to be done. Educate and control the platforms!"

  16. 'Southgate is his own man'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Getty Images

More from former Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith.

After the adrenaline rush of making it all the way to a major tournament final, Smith thinks Gareth Southgate will be eager to move the club and country relationship forward.

He said: "I think he will have to take some time away and this blew up into something more than football didn’t it. He’s got to have that family time which he will do but I think naturally Gareth is a giving person.

"He’s his own man, you’re never going to change what his thoughts are, he’s got a firm view on what he wants to achieve for this England team.

"For coaching in England I think the FA have got to take major credit out of this for producing the academies the clubs have got to take major credit out of it as well.

"I think Gareth now can get back with his communication skill he has got and go back to the clubs and say thanks for loaning me your players, how can we build on it. Give me some input on how we can make this better."

  17. 'Southgate is incredibly proud'published at 15:49 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Getty Images

Former Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith was sat with Gareth Southgate's family to watch the final at Wembley Stadium last night.

The pair have been friends since Southgate played under Smith during the early days of his career and Smith says the England boss has given the country a pride "way above football".

"He’s disappointed but I think being realistic he knows the team have done well," Smith told BBC Sport.

"I think he knows that Italy were the better side on the night and would be honest about that. I think he’s incredibly proud and he’s already said that the way the players have gone about it - they’ve been sporting, they've accepted defeat.

"They've really given this country a pride way above football actually. People who aren't interested in football have really got hold of this. So I think He understands that, he’s pretty much a man of the people. He's in the real world and not in a cocooned world of lovey dovey things. It’s been great."

Was Harry Maguire's penalty one of the greatest spot kicks of all time?

Commentator Guy Mowbray said Maguire "took the net off" when the Manchester United captain stepped forward to take England's second penalty during the shootout with Italy.

So, what do you think? Is Maguire's spot kick worthy of the penalty Hall of Fame?

Paul Leonard: Knowing what Gareth Southgate went through in 1996, to put Sancho straight into the penalty shootout (when he’s hardly played) & to put Saka up showed his non tactical nous when it should have been Grealish and Sterling.

Dan does Stuff: Southgate has rightly got a lot of praise for his decisions throughout this tournament. However, he got an awful lot wrong over the past two games. He rode his luck in the semi and got found out in the final.
