  1. 'You’re one mistake away from abuse on social media'published at 14:29 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former West Ham, Sunderland and QPR defender Anton Ferdinand spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about the issue of footballers being racially abused on social media.

“I don’t get why social media companies are allowing anonymity on social media and that’s part of the fight that I’m having . How can there not be an ID type process like there is with banking?".

“The only thing (reason) I can come to is the monetary value, the excuses that we tend to get are, 'oh not everyone’s got ID, not everyone’s got a national insurance number, not everyone’s got this, not everyone’s got that'.

"But it comes down to whether they really want to do it or whether they don’t and that’s always been my message to these companies.

“99.9% of those from an ethnic minority background would have been hoping nobody misses (a penalty) but if anybody does miss I hope it’s not someone who’s black because they’re going to be abused.

“As a footballer you’re one mistake away from abuse on social media.”

  2. Morrison training with Derbypublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Ravel Morrison is training with Derby in the latest attempt to relaunch his career.

The 28-year-old former Manchester United midfielder has been at eight clubs since joining Cardiff in September 2014.

During that period he has made only 36 first-team appearances, including four last season for Dutch club Den Haag.

Morrison is understood to be amongst a number of ‘triallists’ who have formed part of Wayne Rooney’s squad for a training camp this week.

Former England defender Phil Jagielka is also training with the club. He was released by Sheffield United at the end of the season.

Derby, who have had a troubled period during which they came close to losing their Championship status, are currently under an EFL transfer embargo.

However, the rules of the embargo allow them to sign players if they do not have 23 players in their first-team squad.

All these players must either be free transfers or loans, which can only be for half a season.

  3. 'It's a crime against humanity'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

More strong words from former England captain Terry Butcher on the scenes that marred Sunday's Euro 2020 final.

"A World Cup on English soil stops hooligans from travelling abroad but it's the behaviour of our fans on home soil that worries me enormously," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I lived and played through the era of hooliganism and it's horrible and I've gone away with England and done work lots of work for 5 Live in tournaments abroad and some of the scenes from English fans has been horrific.

"It's not the majority of the England supporters, England supporters are fantastic just like the Tartan Army in Scotland but you have certain sections that want to create violence and mayhem, they enjoy this and these are the people that you don't want anywhere near football at all and society as well.

"It's a crime against humanity and it's a crime against decent people, people that don't deserve this.

"You've got to look at stiffer sentences and punishments so that they've got to think twice about doing this kind of thing because they are not going to stop at just doing it once, they are going to continue doing it on and on."

  4. 'It's a football competition and should be regarded as a football competition'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

Here's more from former England captain Terry Butcher, who was on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning and had his say on the events following the Euros.

"Are we going back to this era now of hooliganism, obviously the racism is increasing it's now more volatile, more bitter and more horrible.

"We are in a society where just coming through a pandemic and life if very important, we've seen a lot of people lose their lives and I can't understand these people how they go off and do these things.

"It's a football competition and should be regarded as a football competition but people want to take it to the next level.

  5. Butcher: 'It has soured the competition'published at 14:03 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    BBC Sounds

Former England captain Terry Butcher says the violent scenes at Wembley and racism towards players have "soured" the competition.

"When you look at England playing in tournaments...away from this country, you worry.

"You worry about racism but you also worry about the yobs that go across that purportedly support England as well."

  7. ID opt-in could be solution - Jamespublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

Former England goalkeeper David James has been speaking to BBC Newscast about the issue of racist abuse on social media and what the tech companies can do to clamp down on the problem.

"I can see both sides of it if I can play devil’s advocate. If you look at the technology we’re talking about, and put it into an old context - IE the mail - because a player would get abusive fan mail, you wouldn’t ask the postal service to look at every letter before it gets delivered. There’s a limitation to what people can do.

"But with modern technology, if there’s a solution, I would suggest that social media companies offer an opt-in for ID proof, and therefore football clubs, or anyone on social media, can only see people who have verified themselves through ID, because I know there’s a privacy issue here. And therefore, if you haven’t, no-one will see your posts."

  11. Giroud close to Chelsea exitpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is close to signing for AC Milan.

The 34-year-old French international is expected to sign a two-year deal and could complete the move by the end of the week.

Giroud joined Chelsea from Arsenal for £18m in January 2018 and last month extended his contract until 2022.

It would mean that Chelsea would be able to command a transfer fee for the forward, who last season scored 11 goals in 31 appearances with some crucial strikes in the Champions League as Chelsea won their second title.

After the signings of German forwards Kai Havertz and Timo Werner last summer, Giroud made only eight Premier League starts in the 2020-21 season.

Very strange top top scorer Ronaldo and golden glove winner Pickford not in the team of the tournament. What is the point in having them awards then?

  18. Anderson leaves West Ham for Laziopublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

Felipe Anderson has left West Ham to return to Lazio.

Anderson was the Hammers’ £36m record signing when he moved from the Italian club in 2018.

However, whilst the 28-year-old showed flashes of decent form, manager David Moyes felt Anderson was not consistent enough and allowed him to join Porto on loan last season.

That move did not work out for the midfielder either as he started just one league game, in addition to four substitute appearances.

Absolutely disgusted with our actions on Sunday. We are lobbying for the World Cup in 2030 but why would anyone consider us with how we behave when given the chance? I'm so proud of the boys and to find out how they've been abused is both upsetting and quite frankly a national shame, at a time when we should be proud as a nation. I hope the young lads can get some comfort in the knowledge that the vast majority of the country supports them, however vile the shameless minority are.
