Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Sport: "Many things went wrong. We conceded an early goal, played a good first half but at the same time there was the sending off and the interpretation from the referee.

"The fans were behind us but unfortunately the goal from nothing was disallowed. This afternoon Jonny Evans with the same action got a yellow card. It is interpretation from the referee...we made a mistake for the goal and the second one a yellow or red card it depends on the referee.

On decisions against City: "It's VAR. I don't know the line. It was yellow card in Leicester a red here. The referees are the bosses and they decide. The goal we concede was our mistake."

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira speaking to BBC Sport: “You have to defend well and we did it. You have to take your chances and we did it and you need a bit of luck because of the quality of their players. When you have those three aspects you have more chance but I am really proud of the way we fought.

"We could not come to a place like this and not have players taking part of the defensive work. Everyone worked really hard. When you sacrifice yourself like that you are really pleased when you get a win.

"What is important is to keep improving ourselves. This is a group that needs to play more games together and believe more in themselves. I am pleased with the step we make today. We have started to have confidence in ourselves but there is still a lot they can give."

On the red card for Aymeric Laporte: "I wasn’t really well positioned to make a call. That went In our favour, the offside went in our favour. You need that if you want to win at City and we will take it because in the last couple of games we have not had that luck.

On Wilfried Zaha: "When Wilf is like that, taking his chances and working really hard.. he is somebody who is really strong on one versus one. His personality, his character he is a winner. Today he worked really hard and this is what I expect and want from him."

Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel told BBC Match of the Day: “Don’t confuse patience for falling asleep. It was necessary to be patient and it was necessary also when you are more or less the only team who is responsible for the intensity and rhythm of the game.

“It is not an easy task. I’m very happy with the performance off the ball, like what happened when we lost the ball - our counter pressing was excellent. The attacking when they were on the ball was excellent. The effort off the ball, the concentration, hunger and discipline from the whole team was brilliant off the ball. That is what makes me happy and what was key today."

On Newcastle’s approach: “It can frustrate you. Big credit to the team for staying positive and to hang in there with the right attitude and never lose quality off the ball.”

On Liverpool and Manchester City dropping points: “It is a good day because of us. I believe what goes around comes around and I don’t feel happy to celebrate other performances and results. We should be focused ourselves. There is a long way to go and we know what we consistently need to produce to be able to have results. It is never the moment to be happy about other teams dropping points.”

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira speaking to Sky Sports: “We are showing that we are improving as a team. Coming to City it is one of the most difficult grounds in the Premier League. Really pleased with the way we approached the game. We knew it was important to defend well and we did.

“We accepted to suffer and work really hard and in the end we were rewarded. It was important for us because we went to Liverpool and played really well but conceded three goals.

“Out of possession there were details we needed to improve and today the group showed they were capable of doing that for 95 minutes.

"When you come to City you have to have a bit of luck but today not just about that. It was players putting their bodies on the line to prevent goals and players sacrificing themselves.”

Cristiano Ronaldo the difference at the break. Not the best game but United won't mind.

There was some talk that Cristiano Ronaldo's presence was causing a tactical problem for Manchester United and that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should even go into this game without him - that showed exactly why he keeps him in the side.

It was a glorious piece of technique. Now it is up to Spurs to respond - and they have been very dull and lacking in imagination so far.

Spurs haven't tested David de Gea yet - and they still haven't as Emerson Royal finds Giovano lo Celso, who shoots over from the edge of the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 11 goals in 19 appearances against Spurs, including netting in each of his last six for Real Madrid and United.
