I'm told that communication with United started to pick up about 48 hours ago. With City, I spoke to them yesterday and they were very much trying to play down this rolling expectation that was building up around them signing him.
This came off the back of them trying to sign Harry Kane and him deciding to stay at Tottenham. I got the sense from City that the deal wasn't as likely as everyone seemed to think it was.
The interesting thing today was that Ronaldo turned up at Juventus' training ground and then left without training. The Juve coach gave a press conference 45 minutes before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave his and he said that Ronaldo had come into the club, said he didnt want to play for them anymore and then left.
You can't do that unless you have somewhere to go and I think Ronaldo knew at that point that Manchester United were going to come in for a bid which would be accepted.
Solskjaer hinted in his press conference that if Cristiano wanted to leave, he knew where Man United was.
I'm told the deal is 15m euros with the potential of another 8m in add-ons and it's all done. All that needs to happen now is a medical and contracts need to be signed. That's how quick these things can happen when you know it's going to happen.

Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical.
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has so far won over 30 major trophies during his career, including five Uefa Champions League titles, four Fifa Club World Cups, seven league titles in England, Spain and Italy, and the European Championship for his native Portugal.
In his first spell for Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.
Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.

The Athletic, external are reporting that Manchester United are "on the verge" of agreeing a deal with Juventus for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The fee would be £12.8m + add-ons.
It comes 18 years after the Red Devils paid Sporting Lisbon £12.2m for the fresh-faced Portuguese in 2003.

Manchester United have made an official approach to Juventus to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
The move comes in a swiftly developing situation that began when Juve coach Max Allegri confirmed at lunchtime that Ronaldo had told the club of his intention to leave.
It is understood United have been talking with Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes.
No agreement is in place yet but negotiations are said to be at an advanced stage, with a deal highly likely before the transfer deadline closes on Tuesday.
