Jon: Can only hope Ronaldo goes to PSG rather than City, if Mbappe goes to Madrid. Or given the latest gossip, Richarlison to replace Mbappe so Ronaldo to Everton?! Just not City please!

Grahame: Has to be Sol Campbell leaving for a free to Arsenal, after publicly stating he was going to stay at Tottenham. He could have gone anywhere and Barcelona were interested. Apparently he doesn't understand why Spurs fans still can't forgive him!

Defender Kurt Zouma has made 99 Premier League appearances for Chelsea since joining them in 2014.

During the last seven years he's also spent time on loan at Saint-Etienne, Stoke and Everton making 78 league appearances for those clubs.

West Ham are closing in on the £25m signing of Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

Hammers manager David Moyes has been desperate to bolster his squad ahead of his side’s return to European competition.

Zouma is undergoing a medical and it is understood personal terms have been sorted.

The 26-year-old France defender made 36 appearances for Chelsea last season but is not viewed as a long-term prospect by Thomas Tuchel, who has been targettting Sevilla’s France defender Jules Kounde.

West Ham have started the season in superb fashion, recording back-to-back victories against Newcastle and Leicester to top the Premier League after two games.

However, Moyes knows he needs more players if West Ham are to maintain their progress once the competing demands of league football and the Europa League begin to have an impact next month.

Does six-years service make you a club legend?

Possibly a borderline one on his length of time at the club and his first three years were very much a case of him trying to become consistent.

What Cristiano Ronaldo helped Manchester United achieve in the next three probably swings it for most fans, mind.

Not a United fan, but anyone who says him moving to City impacts his legacy or that he isn't a club legend is being ridiculous. Won 3 PL's, Champions League and won the the Ballon d'Or when he was there. Denis Law is also played for both and is still a club legend.

    Dave

I'm hoping against hope that Ronaldo doesn't join the dark side and that all these rumours are just that. Rumours. Don't do it, Ronnie! Ferguson gave you your career.

The draw for the Champions League group stage was made yesterday.

Manchester City have been drawn to face Paris St-Germain, RB Leipzig and Club Bruges.

Holders Chelsea come up against Juventus, Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and Swedish side Malmo.

Manchester United face Villarreal, who beat them in last season's Europa League final, as well as Italian club Atalanta and Swiss side Young Boys.

Liverpool are in a tough group with Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan.

So, a mixed one for the English sides. You can see the full draw here.

Andy White: Mo Johnston moving to Rangers must rank amongst one of the most controversial ever.

Having played for Old Firm rivals Celtic previously, Johnston shocked Scotland by crossing the sectarian divide in Glasgow by signing for Rangers in 1989 becoming the first high-profile Catholic player to sign for the Ibrox club.

If you're wondering just exactly who else will be in the Europa League draw there's a decent smattering of clubs that you will know all about.

Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Napoli, Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, Lyon, Marseille and Monaco are all in there.

Plus there's then the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Brondby, Sparta Prague et al.

  12. Old Firm possibility for West Hampublished at 08:37 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

It's the Europa League group stage draw at 11am BST. West Ham are going to be in Pot Three, with Leicester joining Celtic and Rangers in Pot Two.

It raises the potential for an Old Firm opponent for the Hammers' Scottish manager David Moyes.

Tottenham will be in Pot One for the Europa Conference League draw that takes place at 12.30BST.

That new competition was brought in to extend the breadth of clubs involved in the latter stages of European competition.

As Gibraltar's Lincoln Red Imps and Finland's HJK Helsinki have made it to the group stage, it seems to have done its job.

This is a great decision by United not to sign Ronaldo. I am a life-long City fan and it is the worst thing we could possibly do. He is over age, will not increase the quality we have on the pitch and totally arrogant. It also breaks City's wage structure. I for one will not pay to go to watch while he is at the club.

    Duncan in Cheshire

As a United fan, if Ronaldo goes to City I'm not fussed. Ronaldo is not a true club legend. He would have left the club earlier if he could and never planned to spend his best years at the club.

So, why is this Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester City stuff suddenly gathering pace - and will he fit in at the Etihad if the deal does happen before Tuesday's transfer deadline?

BBC Radio 5 Live's team of European football experts - Raphael Honigstein, Julien Laurens and Kristof Terreur - have been discussing these questions and more.

Stephen: Ronaldo's legendary status at United will disappear instantaneously if he joins City at this stage, alienating the United fans the adore him. He would only be doing it to guarantee more trophies. He's already taking a pay cut, so it's not a money-related decision.

Marc: Peter Beardsley from Liverpool to Everton. Liverpool legend, and still is. Michael Owen to Man Utd. Still can't forgive.

Not like he'll be playing for free though Stephen. Most reports put it at a minimum of £250,000 per week.

  18. Fifa step into Afghan nightmarepublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 27 August 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The truly awful situation in Afghanistan has not left football untouched and Fifa's hierarchy are trying to help those who have been affected.

“The Fifa President and Secretary General are following closely the situation and are working tirelessly with governments and relevant organisations to get those at risk out of Afghanistan," said a statement on behalf of the world governing body.

"Fifa`s leadership is personally involved in negotiating the complex evacuation of footballers and other athletes.

"This is an extremely challenging environment and, given the delicate and volatile situation on the ground, please understand we cannot provide any further details at this stage.”

World football's governing body Fifa says it is "negotiating the complex evacuation" of footballers and other athletes from Afghanistan.

The Australian government evacuated 50 female athletes on Tuesday after sportswomen expressed fears for their safety under the Taliban regime.

And many of the country's female footballers have gone into hiding.

Fifa said it is working with "governments and relevant organisations".
