  2. 'Ronaldo was like Sir Alex - a winner'published at 13:13 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Manchester United

Former Man United defender Quinton Fortune speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"I was very fortunate to be on the same pitch as him. I saw him first in pre-season, when we played at Sporting Lisbon. Luckily for me, I was playing left-back and John O'Shea was right-back and he was playing on John O'Shea's side. I was saying: 'Please don't come to my side, please...'

"After the game in the changing room, we all looked at each other, shook our heads and thought: 'What in the world was that?' [The only other time I'd experienced that was with] Ronaldo, the Brazilian.

"I think the boss went to sort out the deal straight after the game. What sets Cristiano Ronaldo apart from all other players is his mindset. He hasn't just got the ability, he had the most unbelievable self-belief and work ethic. That's why he's still at the top of his game.

"He was relentless. He was almost like a bit of Sir Alex Ferguson on the pitch, he was a serial winner. He wanted to win everything, you tease him about something today and he'd want to come back tomorrow morning and beat you at it."

Having five EFL clubs on your patch means it’s never going to be dull on deadline day – so here’s what we’re expecting from our Manchester clubs today:

Bolton – expecting maybe one or two in, and possibly one out.

Wigan – we’ve been told to “expect activity”.

Oldham – little movement expected here. Anything that does happen would be on a one in, one out policy.

Salford – one in, one out – and it should happen soon!

Don’t worry about Rochdale either, we’ve enquired but it’s all quiet there for now.

  4. James to rejoin Wales squad in Finlandpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales

An added complication for some players moving clubs today is that they're currently with their national teams.

Daniel James is one such player. The Manchester United winger, who is on the verge of completing a £30m move to Leeds United, has been with Wales as they prepare for tomorrow's friendly in Finland and upcoming World Cup qualifers against Belarus and Estonia.

Wales fly to Helsinki from Cardiff today, but James will be travelling from Leeds after completing his medical.

"I have to be flexible with the players. I can't say he can't leave," said Wales manager Robert Page.

"He'll be rejoining the camp and will be in Finland."

  5. Bellerin close to Real Betis loan movepublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    BBC Sport

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin is close to a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis.

The 26-year-old Spanish international is scheduled for a medical in London later on Tuesday.

Bellerin has struggled for playing time at the Emirates since a serious knee injury in 2019 but made 25 Premier League appearance last season. He has two years left on his current contract.

It will be interesting to see what impact this move has on Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has been linked with a move to Everton and said on Monday: "All I want to do is go where I’m wanted & where I’m going to play."

Could be an interesting evening at Arsenal.

  6. 'The work is not finished'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Crystal Palace

Terence Ford, Back of the Nest podcast:

"So far so good in South London. Several departures of ageing Palace stalwarts and the appointment of Vieira demanded a positive window and it has been almost perfect. We’ve added two young ball playing centre backs in Andersen and Guehi and an exciting winger in Olise. Gallagher makes the midfield more dynamic and carries a goal threat. Hughes will aid out new possession based playing style.

"The work is not finished. Benteke needs support up top and a striker will certainly be added to the ranks. Will it be young Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal or the more established Odsonne Eduoard from Celtic? Either way, both are unproven at Premier League level but exciting prospects nonetheless.

"If back up at left back is added, it’s hard to not score the window as perfect."

Mick Rodely: I'd give anything for an in-his-prime Roy Keane at Manchester United. A lack of a top class defensive midfielder is our main weakness.

Andre Allume: Andy Johnson back to Crystal Palace. We need a striker who can score on a regular basis.

  8. 'We weren't satisfied' with Chelsea's offer for Kounde, say Sevillapublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Chelsea

Chelsea's chase for Sevilla and France defender Jules Kounde has been well documented in the media during the summer transfer window. So how close it is to happening?

Sevilla's director of football Monchi is addressing the topic in a deadline day news conference and it doesn't seem that promising if you are a Blues fan.

"The only written, formal offer from Chelsea came last Wednesday, around 5pm," Monchi said.

"We weren't satisfied with the offer, and it was linked to Chelsea selling a player. It was a decent fee but it didn't meet our criteria.

"We haven't spoken with Chelsea since Friday night. We all decided that it was best Jules didn't travel to Elche. It's normal for players to be affected by news of any kind. Last year he had the interest from City and now Chelsea this year.

"Kounde's clause never went up to 90 million euros. It has always been 80 million."

Accrington Stanley have signed West Brom striker Jovan Malcolm on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old, who signed his first professional deal with the Baggies in the summer, is yet to make his senior debut for the Championship side.

Stanley are ninth in League One after five games, with three wins and two defeats so far this campaign. Malcolm could make his debut for John Coleman's side against Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

  10. 'Business not been what Wolves are crying out for'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Wolves

    Richard Hobbs, Wolves Football Fancast:

"Wolves transfer business has not as yet reflected what this team has been crying out for for the past 18 months. Re-signing Rayan Ait-Nouri to a permanent deal and bringing in Trincao on loan got Wolves to a solid start to the window. Wolves have also changed goalkeeper, surprise surprise, he's Portuguese, in the form of Jose Sa.

"However, a lack of strengthening and improving the spine of the team is what has seen the club club from European challengers to mid-table.

"The club have cleared the decks with the departures of Cutrone and Mir, but the manager and natives are restless that they haven’t as yet been replaced.

"The signing of Hwang Hee-Chan hopefully bolsters our attacking options and start converting the plethora of chances Wolves have create."

  12. 'Newcastle fans will be amazed with any more signings'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Newcastle United

Mark Jensen - Editor of The Mag (independent Newcastle United magazine now website, themag.co.uk)

Despite only Joe Willock arriving in the opening 83 days of this summer transfer window, Newcastle United fans will be amazed if anybody joins him at St James Park on deadline day.

The 84th and final day of the window arrives alongside seemingly informed media reports, from journalists close to Steve Bruce, that there isn’t even money available to fund a loan signing.

With eight goals already conceded in the opening trio of Premier League matches, it has once again highlighted the need for better quality to be added in both defence and central midfield.

The portrayal of Newcastle fans as permanently deluded with expectations far beyond their station, hardly matches the reality of a single loan signing by 11pm actually exceeding expectations today.

The dream of course for most Newcastle United supporters would be the arrival of a new manager (a change of ownership on a whole other level of course) but failing that, a loan signing with pace to play in, or in front of, the defence would be as good as it gets in terms of realistic hopes.

With pretty much all of Newcastle’s relegation rivals continuing to strengthen in the past week, the clock is most definitely ticking loudly at St James Park.

  13. Newcastle business to stay quietpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Few suggestions that Newcastle are interested in signing Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury on loan and Bournemouth winger David Brooks.

I'm told that both suggestions are wide of the mark and Newcastle won't be doing any more business today.

Midfielder Joe Willock remains the only major buy this window, which has been a source of frustration for supporters.

Spurs transfer window so far. We’ve got a backup goalkeeper. An investment buy who we’ve loaned back to his previous club. We’ve lost our best CB Alderweireld, to replace with another CB. That’s only a like for like. Lost first teamer Lamela, for a young investment buy, who could be good in the future but will not improve us this season. Lost the loan players Bale & Carlos Vinicius who scored us 26 goals last season, without replacing them. On paper Spurs are starting the season not as good as they finished the last, not a good transfer window yet. I don’t understand how people are saying we’ve done good!

    Matt, Unconfident Spurs fan

Come on Matt, be positive lad. Spurs are top of the table with a 100% record and they've already beaten the reigning champions. You've kept Harry Kane. Surely that's as good as August could've been for you.

  15. 'Ndombele has to knuckle down if he doesn't leave'published at 12:11 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Tottenham Hotspur

Nathan A Clark, The Extra Inch podcast:

"There are a few tasks that remain going into deadline day, but may well not be finished this time around, for Tottenham.

"For a lot of the summer Spurs were looking to bring in a centre-back/full-back hybrid in Takehiro Tomiyasu before appearing to suddenly realise they already had one in Japhet Tanganga. Whether they want to double down on that profile and see Tomiyasu's transfer through or keep the options in that role diverse with wing-back Matt Doherty (or someone like him?) remains unclear. The rumours at the time of writing are for a compromisingly well-rounded, if a little slow, Emerson Royal.

"As has been a summer tradition since he took his role in the first XI, Spurs have been searching for the ever-elusive Harry Kane back-up and probably always will be.

"Tanguy Ndombele wants to leave and, for all his talents, Tottenham appear to be prepared to let him if they can get a swap or enough cash for a similar midfield ball progressor.

"It seems fairly unlikely to materialise though and hopefully the big show and tell of us trying to is enough that he doesn’t hold it against us and when the window closes he knuckles down and finally has the season that he has always promised - the conditions are finally right for him."

There has been a lot of speculation around Tottenham's record signing Tanguy Ndombele this summer.

It seemed certain the £53.8m midfielder would be moving on.

However, suitors have been hard to find and my understanding is Ndombele will be remaining at Spurs for at least the first half of the season.

Ndombele has not even made the bench this season, let alone play.

    David Blackmore, Blowing Bubbles editor:

"As with seemingly every transfer window, we need cover and competition up top with Michail Antonio's annual hamstring injury likely to happen at any point - especially now with his international duties with Jamaica.

"Jesse Lingard is a player who I would like to see join us permanently before the transfer window slams shut. He showed what he could do last season, and I think he would thrive being the big fish in West Ham's pond.

"But does he want to leave Manchester United? And would he be able to recreate the same performances when he hasn't got a point to prove?"

  19. West Ham's Antonio called up for Jamaicapublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Olly Foster
    BBC reporter

Some news away from transfer deadline day...

West Ham striker Michail Antonio is set to make his first appearance for Jamaica in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Premier League’s top scorer this season had been named in the Reggae Boyz squad for matches against Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica.

He can only feature against Panama in Kingston on Sunday, 5 September. The other two fixtures are away, with Mexico and Costa Rica on the UK government’s red list.

The Premier League clubs have said that they will not release their players for games in red list countries because of the quarantine protocols required on return.

There are 15 British based players in the squad with Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock and Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey also included. Antonio was called up by England in Sam Allardyce’s first squad in September 2016 but was an unused substitute v Slovakia in WCQ.

He was also close to making his England debut in March 2017 when picked by Gareth Southgate but withdrew from that squad through injury. He might have come into Southgate’s thinking for the current squad given his strong start to the season and could have been a useful option given the injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
