Akhil Vyas, Arsenal Supporters Trust, board member: "This window was as much about outgoings as incomings for Arsenal but selling on permanent deals has been a real issue.

"However, getting wages off the books for a while is important. The hope will be Nelson, Bellerin and co. have good seasons out on loan to increase the interest and we can sell next year, a bit like what happened with Joe Willock.

"There are a few more that still may go - Kolasinac is a high earner having come to us on a free that you would think needs to be shifted. As for Ainsley Maitland Niles - who knows what's happening there?"

The Ainsley Maitland-Niles saga is still continuing.

The Press Association are reporting the Gunners are waiting for a compelling offer and have no intention of keeping him against his will if such a bid is received.

Striker Eddie Nketiah looks set to stay. It is understood a deal was agreed with Crystal Palace but personal terms proved the stumbling block.

Negotiations continue over possible departures for Reiss Nelson, Hector Bellerin and Alex Runarsson as Mikel Arteta looks to trim his squad.

    BBC Sport

Saido Berahino could be set for a surprise return to English football with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 28-year-old former England Under-21 forward joined Belgian side Zulte Waregem in 2019 after stints at West Brom and Stoke ended in controversy.

Berahino spent last season on loan at Charleroi, who opted not to take up the option to buy him.

Wednesday boss Darren Moore knows Berahino from his time as a coach at West Brom.

The Owls have made a good start to the season and are currently second following their relegation from the Championship but have scored only five goals in five games and Moore wants to increase his attacking options.

Nicks: Even though we re-signed Lukaku, I'd prefer signing prime Lampard. Who wouldn't want a 20 goal a season mid. Lukaku and Frank in the same team would be a deadly combination.

Ryan: Give anything to have prime Zola back to the famous Chelsea. Think he'd still leave defences stumped in the modern game.

  12. 'Cornet arrival gives everyone a lift'published at 13:40 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Burnley

Tony Scholes, Up The Clarets blogger:

"It’s going well so far at Burnley. We were never going to be bringing in a lot of new players but we are slowly but surely filling the gaps in the squad.

"Nathan Collins, a young defender from Stoke was first and he’ll learn from James Tarkowski and Ben Mee initially. With a young defender signed, we then needed a back up goalkeeper to allow Bailey Peacock-Farrell to go out on loan. Step in Wayne Hennessey, a goalkeeper with a lot of Premier League and international experience.

"We were still desperately short in the wide areas. Aaron Lennon left a year ago and Robbie Brady this summer and both needed replacements. Lennon’s replacement arrived last Wednesday, Lennon himself, back at the club after a year in Turkey.

"That one was good provided we signed another wide player. We don’t often do the exciting or unexpected but the capture of Maxwel Cornet from Olympique Lyonnaise is very both. It’s given everyone a lift and was the talking point at the Leeds game this weekend."

It's going to be a busy day at Swansea City, who look set to sell a number of first-team players.

Wales full-back Connor Roberts is on the verge of joining Burnley for a reduced fee, possibly even less than £2m, because he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Forward Jamal Lowe, meanwhile, is having a medical with Championship rivals Bournemouth.

In terms of incomings, Swansea are set to sign Liverpool defender Rhys Williams on a season-long loan.

The Swans are also interested in former Manchester City and Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham, who is unattached and available on a free transfer.

  18. 'Ronaldo wanted to be the best in the world'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Manchester United

Former Manchester United youth team manager and first team coach Rene Meulensteen speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"What impressed me most in his debut against Bolton was that making your debut at Old Trafford for Manchester United is not an easy thing to do, it is huge. But that's where, already, Cristiano was different from anybody else. The flair and confidence when he came on - there were no nerves whatsoever.

"Then later when I started to have more one-to-one conversations with him, you get into what drives him and motivates him. He knew from the very first minute exactly what he wanted - he wanted to become the best footballer in the world.

"For him to come to Man United was the best thing to ever happen to me. With Sir Alex Ferguson, all those top players at the time - Giggs, Scholes, Rio Ferdinand - it was fantastic, because those players educated Cristiano very, very quickly. He was a very quick learner."

  19. 'I'd never seen anything like it' - Ronaldo's 2003 Man United debutpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport football reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

On watching Cristiano Ronaldo's 2003 Man United debut against Bolton from the stands:

That summer, David Beckham had left Man United after a protracted argument with Sir Alex Ferguson. There was a feeling at the time that Beckham was going and the world would never be the same again.

United bought Ronaldo, basically because players who played against him in a pre-season friendly against Sporting Lisbon said: 'You've got to buy this kid.'

He came on and he had this spaghetti strand in his hair. The way that he carried the ball... as a journalist, you get used to overreactions to players playing well, but I'd never seen anything like it. The way he carried the ball and was willing to take people on and he kept doing it.

Nobody who came away from that stadium having watched the half hour that he played would've come away from the stadium with any other thought than: 'This guy is destined for the very, very top.'
