For a long time it looked as though it just wasn't going to be Stoke's night.

I had to blink each time I typed '0-0', because it seemed farcical that the deadlock hadn't been broken.

But no doubt Stoke will take a lot of confidence from this victory, while you would back West Brom to return to winning ways before too long.

After all, they are six points better off than they were at the start of last Friday.

Stoke have thoroughly deserved their victory. They have matched Albion in every department.

It was a very disappointing performance from Albion, they will need to get it out of their system after the international break.

That might just be Stoke's best performance under Michael O'Neill and one of their strongest showings since relegation from the Premier League.

Nick Powell keeping his composure made all the difference in the end, but Stoke should have been out of sight by then as Jacob Brown hit the post, Mario Vrancic curled a free kick against the bar, and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone saved Sam Surridge's shot and penalty.

Johnstone couldn't come to the aid of West Brom's unbeaten record when Powell sent a delightful chip bouncing into the net to score in a fourth consecutive game.

West Brom just cannot get the ball down and create.

One last (long) throw of the dice.

Apart from a few early openings for Callum Robinson and West Brom, you have to say that Stoke have won the battle defensively all night.

There have been some nervy moments - including Davies' handball outside of the area - but the back three in red and white have been a towering brick wall.

Stoke City's fans are very happy.

They have so far outplayed the Championship leaders, they've also hit the post, hit the bar and had a penalty saved.

If they'd taken all those chances they'd have been knocking Albion off the top tonight.

No wonder they've just weighed in with a rousing chorus of 'Top of the league, you're having a laugh'.

Time stood still just then as James Chester just about managed to hook the ball away after Furlong's long throw caused chaos in the penalty area.

Nick Powell, who now has six goals in eight games in all competitions, is off for Alfie Doughty.

His job is done and now Stoke will try and hang on to what would be their fifth home win out of six this season.

This leaves us with a big question.

Can West Brom rescue their unbeaten record in the dying embers of the game?
