  1. That's it, until tomorrowpublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 1 October 2021

    FT: Stoke 1-0 West Brom

For a long time it looked as though it just wasn't going to be Stoke's night.

I had to blink each time I typed '0-0', because it seemed farcical that the deadlock hadn't been broken.

But no doubt Stoke will take a lot of confidence from this victory, while you would back West Brom to return to winning ways before too long.

After all, they are six points better off than they were at the start of last Friday.

Thanks for joining us tonight and make sure you are back again tomorrow!

Nick Powell lobs the only goal of the game as Stoke City beat Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion, who hadn't lost any of their previous 10 matches this season.

  4. Baggies first loss sends Stoke up to thirdpublished at 21:52 British Summer Time 1 October 2021

    FT: Stoke 1-0 West Brom

We may only be 11 games in, but there is no question that by beating a quality side who were yet to lose until tonight, Stoke have put themselves firmly in the conversation as far as promotion contenders go.

  5. 'Deserved win for Stoke'published at 21:47 British Summer Time 1 October 2021

    FT: Stoke 1-0 West Brom

    Tony Brown
Former West Brom striker on BBC Radio WM

Stoke have thoroughly deserved their victory. They have matched Albion in every department.

It was a very disappointing performance from Albion, they will need to get it out of their system after the international break.

  6. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:41 British Summer Time 1 October 2021

    Stoke 1-0 West Brom

That might just be Stoke's best performance under Michael O'Neill and one of their strongest showings since relegation from the Premier League.

Nick Powell keeping his composure made all the difference in the end, but Stoke should have been out of sight by then as Jacob Brown hit the post, Mario Vrancic curled a free kick against the bar, and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone saved Sam Surridge's shot and penalty.

Johnstone couldn't come to the aid of West Brom's unbeaten record when Powell sent a delightful chip bouncing into the net to score in a fourth consecutive game.

One last (long) throw of the dice.

  9. Postpublished at 90+4 mins

    Stoke 1-0 West Brom

Apart from a few early openings for Callum Robinson and West Brom, you have to say that Stoke have won the battle defensively all night.

There have been some nervy moments - including Davies' handball outside of the area - but the back three in red and white have been a towering brick wall.

This hasn't been one of West Brom's best performances this evening. They have been under par.

Stoke City's fans are very happy.

They have so far outplayed the Championship leaders, they've also hit the post, hit the bar and had a penalty saved.

If they'd taken all those chances they'd have been knocking Albion off the top tonight.

No wonder they've just weighed in with a rousing chorus of 'Top of the league, you're having a laugh'.

  13. Postpublished at 88 mins

    Stoke 1-0 West Brom

Time stood still just then as James Chester just about managed to hook the ball away after Furlong's long throw caused chaos in the penalty area.

  14. Postpublished at 86 mins

    Stoke 1-0 West Brom

Nick Powell, who now has six goals in eight games in all competitions, is off for Alfie Doughty.

His job is done and now Stoke will try and hang on to what would be their fifth home win out of six this season.

This leaves us with a big question.

Can West Brom rescue their unbeaten record in the dying embers of the game?

Nick Powell's team-mates better start saving up for his Christmas gifts.

He has truly saved his side's blushes here.

  17. goal

GOAL: Stoke 1-0 West Brompublished at 78 mins

    Nick Powell

They hit the post. They hit the bar. They missed a penalty.

But at long last, Stoke have a goal.

It's one of the more difficult chances they have had on the night, as a long ball forward comes down over the shoulder of Nick Powell on the right side of the box.

He keeps a cool head and finishes with a delightful chip to give heroic keeper Sam Johnstone no chance.

  18. Postpublished at 76 mins

    Stoke 0-0 West Brom

Steven Fletcher has three goals in Black Country derbies for Wolves against West Brom.

Is he going to be the man to give the Potters the lead they deserve in this game?

    He is on for Vrancic.

  19. Postpublished at 74 mins

    Stoke 0-0 West Brom

West Brom are clinging onto the chance to extend their club record of unbeaten matches at the start of a season to 11.

Adam Davies has just handled the ball outside of the penalty area on the right and received a yellow card, though.

Perhaps the Baggies have a chance here.
