Rangers have been very, very sloppy. I don't remember them being this sloppy in an opening 45 minutes for some time.

  2. Booking for Saints' Mullerpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Hayden Muller's name goes into referee Willie Collum's book after he cynically took out Ryan Kent on the touchline to shut down a Rangers counter-attack.

The defender can have no complaints.

  3. Postpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

St Johnstone go route one and Michael O'Halloran is close to latching on the knockdown from Zander Clark's punt. Felip Helander nips in to save the day for Rangers.

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Kemar Roofe takes aim for the top corner from 25 yards, but Saints keeper Zander Clark is equal to it with a fine parry.

  5. Postpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

The hosts work the ball well down the right and sling it into the penalty box where Chris Kane is waiting.

The striker takes a fresh-air swipe, though, and the chance is gone.

  6. Postpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

The game has hit a lull with both sides struggling to pick a pass.

  7. Postpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Just shy of the half-hour mark and Rangers have had 82% possession.

They've not done a great deal with it, however, and have yet to register a shot on target as Saints defend with aplomb.

  8. 'Saints not phased by set-pieces'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

    Allan Preston
Ex-St Johnstone defender on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

I've always felt with the back three of St Johnstone that when they're defending set-pieces they're never going to concede. It'll be interesting to see how they do with the new additions, though.

  9. Postpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

St Johnstone defender Hayden Muller does his best Johan Cryuff impression with a deft turn to flummox Ryan Kent.

    Muller was last man. Bold.

  10. Postpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Calvin Bassey has Shaun Rooney on toast so far. Another run and cross from the Rangers left-back gives Kemar Roofe a close-range swipe at goal, but Hayden Muller blocks.

  11. Postpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Rangers are cranking up the pressure now and Calvin Bassey drills the ball across goal, with Liam Craig sliding in to divert it behind. Excellent defending.

  12. Postpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

A better set-piece this time from James Tavernier finds Leon Balogun from a corner, but the Rangers defender can't keep his header down.

  13. 'Poor decision from McLaughlin'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Scotland

    Quote Message

I thought that was a really poor decision from Jon McLaughlin. Maybe it's because he's not been playing often. It's a yellow card, correct decision.

  14. McLaughlin yellow cardedpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

A booking for Rangers keeper Jon McLaughlin as St Johnstone almost catch the champions out.

Michael O'Halloran races on to a through ball and is clattered by McLaughlin who had rushed out of his penalty box.

The free-kick comes to nothing but the home side are starting to settle.

  15. Postpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Alfredo Morelos frees James Tavernier down the right, but the Rangers skipper kicks the ball off his standing foot and it squirts out of play.

  16. 'Saints can't just camp in'published at 12:39 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

    Neil McCann
Former Rangers winger on BBC Scotland

    Quote Message

It's important for St Johnstone playing a back five they don't just stay camped in. They've got to go and engage Rangers' full-backs, otherwise James Tavernier and Calvin Bassey will have too much freedom.

  17. Postpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Rangers have all the early ball and Calvin Bassey's dart down the left flank is halted illegally by Shaun Rooney.

It's a great free-kick opportunity, but James Tavernier's poor delivery is easily headed away.

  18. Postpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Despite having practised with a back four in the warm-up, St Johnstone line up with their usual five-man defence.

    Mind games from Callum Davidson?

  20. Rangers have 'good options' in Goldson absence - Gerrardpublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 11 September 2021

    St Johnstone v Rangers (12:30)

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard tells Sky Sports he is confident his side have the players to replace Connor Goldson, who is self isolating.

He said: "Time will tell, he's an important player for us, he's been crucial. Unfortunately we've got to do what we've got to do, thankfully we've got good options.

"Callum Davidson has done a fantastic job here. Their form has probably suffered from trying to qualify in Europe, but if we're off it today we'll have issues."

It's also a return to the dugout for Gerrard, who himself missed two games due to having to self isolate.

He said: "It's better than being at home stuck in bed."
