Well that's thrown a spanner in the works for today's plans.
Aston Villa
Villa say the process of replacing Smith will now begin and the club "will update supporters in due course".
Aston Villa
Smith was appointed Aston Villa head coach just over three years ago in October 2018 and led them back to the Premier League via the play-offs in his first season in charge following a club-record ten-match winning sequence towards the end of that campaign.
The following season, he kept Villa in the top flight while also leading the team out at the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, narrowly losing 2-1 to Manchester City.
CEO Christian Purslow said: “After a good start to last season, this year we have not seen the continuous improvement in results, performances and league position which we have all been looking for.
"For this reason we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact."

Aston Villa confirm they have parted company with head coach Dean Smith.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on BBC Radio 5 Live:
"[Antonio Conte has told us] that work has to be done, improvement has to happen. But still, he's trying to get his point of view across as to how he wants us to play.
"For a player, to get this kind of information is very motivating. If you have the right attitude and the right will to work, you will only improve under a great manager like this.
"I know we've only had each other for four days, but you feel the intensity, you feel the hunger, you feel the willingness to sacrifice everything to try and win. I can only learn from the coach and listen and improve on my game.
"I've said it before, I know I'm not the most talented player my teammates will come across, but my will to sacrifice for the team and the objectives we have as a team is 100% there.
"Technically and mentality I always try to improve. It's a pleasure for me and the team to have a leader like the coach we have now with his coaching staff."

Antonio Conte wandered across the pitch earlier to where the away fans are stationed and those that had already taken to their seats welcomed him with cries of "Antonio, Antonio..."
Just eight days ago Spurs fans were trying to come to terms with that 3-0 defeat by Manchester United, but with a new man at the helm the buzz is certainly back.

Antonio Conte's the type of coach to squeeze every little bit of energy out of you, that's why he was so successful at Juventus.
I don't see anyone else in the world right now that Tottenham could appoint to take over from Nuno Espirito Santo.
I just really hope the president gives him time. We all know how Daniel Levy is, he's really impatient when it comes to his club, he tries to get involved as much as he can.
I hope he gives Conte the room and the freedom to put his stamp on this squad.

I feel like Antonio Conte will come in really strong. He’s got the full backing of the club. Daniel Levy said he can run it as he wants. I feel like he’s going to take people out. They’ve got the ability but when things get hard, something in that dressing room keeps losing games. They seem to capitulate.

Antonio Conte is the fourth person to manage Spurs and Chelsea in the Premier League, after Glenn Hoddle, Andre Villas-Boas and Jose Mourinho.

It's a great appointment for Tottenham. We all know what Antonio Conte did in the recent past - he's bringing a winning mentality.
Let's hope that the players can get on board with the beliefs and philosophy of this coach, because there's only so much an organisation can do.
He is the right man, now let's hope the players can turn it around.

Antonio Conte is a wanted man at Goodison Park.
He has just arrived inside the stadium and is getting mobbed by Spurs fans wanting a selfie.
The Italian is happy to oblige. All smiles at the moment.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is Everton's joint-top scorer in the league with three goals, despite only playing three times this season - how the Toffees could do with him this afternoon.
The forward remains sidelined and, after his stint in the Sky Sports studio on Monday, has just been spotted arriving pitchside, posing for selfies with a few lucky fans.

Watford XI: Foster, Femenia, Nkoulou, Cathcart, Rose, Sarr, Sissoko, Kucka, Tufan, King, Dennis.
Leeds v Leicester (14:00 GMT)
Just one change for Leeds United as Adam Forshaw comes in for Jamie Shackleton who is not named in the squad after being forced off in Leeds’ 2-1 win over Norwich last time out with a knock.
The Whites are still without usual starters Luke Ayling (knee), Robin Koch (pelvis) and Patrick Bamford (ankle) as they look for back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

It's a mild November afternoon on Merseyside but there is a strong breeze swirling around Goodison Park, while the winds of change are also sweeping through visitors Tottenham Hotspur.
This will be Antonio Conte's first Premier League game in charge of the north London outfit, following a chaotic 3-2 victory over Vitesse in the Europa Conference League on Thursday that gave the the Italian a taste of everything Spurs.
Will Conte have already managed to make his mark on a squad that has underwhelmed in recent seasons?
Tottenham may have made their move early in the season, but the pressure is also growing in the home dugout as Everton boss Rafael Benitez looks to pick up his side's first Premier League win since victory over Norwich at the end of September.
How patient will the home fans stay if things don't go well for the Toffees this afternoon? The hosts need a result here to arrest that recent slide.
Enough about Saturday.
There's a new man in at Spurs you know.
Who's in and who's out for Antonio Conte's first Premier League game? Team news is coming shortly.
