    Scotland 0-0 Israel

Scotland are on the front foot immediately.

Nathan Patterson shows why he has started ahead of Stephen O'Donnell as he bursts down the wing and his cut-back finds Che Adams, but the striker's snap shot is straight at goalkeeper Ofir Marciano.

Scotland are perfectly comfortable on the ball and playing out from the back. Gilmour, McGregor and McTominay will bring the ball out and link play well with the likes of McGinn

  9. Can MacPhee nurse Scots to victory?published at 16:53 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

How big a difference will the introduction of former Hearts and Northern Ireland assistant Austin MacPhee make to the Scotland threat?

The 41-year-old has been added to the backroom staff as set-piece specialist after having made an impact after joining Aston Villa and with Steve Clarke admitting that had been a weakness for his side.

  10. Will Scotland boogie?published at 16:50 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

  13. Zahavi is Israel's main manpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

Israel are all change at the back, but there is no doubt that they remain a threat up front and you only need to look at the top goalscorers in World Cup qualifying to realise that.

Only Netherlands' Memphis Depay and Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrovic, with seven apiece, are ahead of PSV Eindhoven 34-year-old Eran Zahavi - and only Ronaldo has scored more than the Israeli at international level in the last three years.

He and the returning Mu'nas Dabbur have proved a lethal partnership, while Shakhtar Donetsk winger Manor Solomon has given Scotland all sorts of problems in previous games - and they have wide man Liel Abada, who has made such a big impact after joining Celtic this summer, in reserve.

  14. 50-50 game, suggests Kayalpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

Former Israel and Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal is another who admits the backing of 50,000-plus fans will give Scotland an added advantage, but he thinks it remains a "50-50" game and is predicting draw.

"The mentality and the way they are speaking in the media right now, Israel want the win and should believe they can do that," he said. "It is massive for them and they travelled early to Scotland to get used to the cold weather.

"The Israeli team have good quality up front and can punish any team in Europe, but we must not forget that players in the Scottish squad are playing in the top league in the world - the Premier League."

  15. Too tight to call?published at 16:38 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

At 45, Scotland are 35 places ahead of Israel in the world rankings.

However, it is the seventh meeting between the sides in just three years and the boys in dark blue have won just once in normal time - a 3-2 victory in Glasgow in 2018.

Israel, though, have yet to win any of their three visits to Hampden during that time - or ever.

They came close almost a year to the day ago, when Scotland secured a Euro 2020 semi-final play-off victory over Israel, but only after a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.

Ryan Fraser hit Scotland's equaliser in Haifa in March in what was the second match of this campaign.

Can Scotland win this one? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

  16. Dabbur and Peretz return for Israelpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

Israel head coach Willi Ruttensteiner makes five changes from the side that were thumped 5-0 in Denmark last time out.

Eyad Abu Abaid comes into defence with Hapoel Be'er Sheva team-mate Eitan Tibi and Beitar Jerusalem's Orel Dgani out injured and former Celtic defender Hatem Abd Elhamed dropping out.

Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton returns to the starting line-up and is also expected to be in defence along with Maccabi Haifa's Ofri Arad.

Venezia's Dor Peretz is in midfield in place of Maccabi Tel Aviv's Dan Glazer, while Hoffenheim's Mu'nas Dabbur is preferred to Real Valladolid's Shon Wiessman up front.

Ofir Marciano keeps his place in goal despite rare starts for Feyenoord since his summer move from Hibernian, with back-up Ariel Harush, of Hapoel Be'er Sheva, missing through injury.

The midfield for me is a really strong area of the pitch. I think we've come across a formation that gets Robertson and Tierney in and it uses a midfield three. I'm a big advocate of two up front too

  18. Unlucky 13% for Scotland?published at 16:28 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Scotland v Israel (17:00 BST)

Scotland's 1-0 win in Austria last time out - their first away victory against a pot one or two team since beating Croatia in 2013 - means their chances of finishing second in Group F have increased from 22% to 61%, according to analysts at Nielsen Gracenote.

However, their calculations still only credit Clarke's side with a 13% chance of actually reaching the World Cup finals in Qatar through the play-offs - roughly the same as when the campaign began.

  19. 'Hendry inclusion a no-brainer'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Neil McCann
Former Scotland winger on BBC Scotland

    Quote Message

Jack Hendry coming into the middle of defence was a no-brainer. He played all last season in that position with two younger guys and it looks like Steve Clarke has seen that. It's a position I used him in myself and it's one he's comfortable in

  20. 'Front men need support'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Michael Stewart

Dykes and Adams are certainly two players who can cause opponents problems with their physicality. They're good as a partnership, but we need to support them with other creative players
