    Spain 0-1 Finland

Spain go so close to an accidental opener as Irene Guerrero's cross from the left wing clips the top of the crossbar.

Then Mariona Caldentey has a shot blocked and then Finland do well to block a dangerous low ball.

    Is a goal coming?

  2. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Spain 0-1 Finland

Spain look shaky at the back and are only creating half-chances up front at the moment.

They have another corner which the Finland keeper punches away.

Mariona Caldentey has been heavily involved in the play as Spain have looked to get back on level terms but a low cross across the face of the six-yard box could not be converted, then she shot at Finland goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela and then saw her cross narrowly miss the head of Aitana Bonmati.

But Finland look a threat with the ball over the top and Adelina Engman had a chance to double their advantage but fired just wide.

The top tier of Stadium MK is not in use today, but there's a sizeable crowd in the lower tier and a great atmosphere. There's a hugely excitable group of young children cheering on Spain behind the goal they are attacking in the first half. Will they get to see their team find the net?

As soon as Finland get the ball forward, they do so into those spaces. Adelina Engman's a willing runner but there was at least one body in the box who she might have been able to cross to.

    Spain 0-1 Finland

Esther Gonzalez can't get enough backlift on her 20-yard shot here and it just drops into the keeper's hands. A Spain team-mate suggests she should have passed.

    Spain 0-1 Finland

That goal was the second quickest in Women's Euros history. Only one had ever been scored in the first minute before.

    Spain 0-1 Finland

Finland have only had about 17% of the ball - but they are doing plenty with it. Another chance as Adelina Engman bursts into the box and drags a shot wide of the far post. Not a dissimilar shot to Linda Sallstrom's goal, bar the finish. Or the Finnish if you will.

  8. 'Spain enjoy grinding teams down'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 8 July 2022

    Spain 0-1 Finland

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on BBC Two

Finland are going to have to work really hard. Spain are all about overloading in numbers. Whenever the ball goes out wide, there are three or four players waiting to pick up up. Spain enjoy having the ball and grinding teams down.

  9. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Spain 0-1 Finland

Spain's first chance of the game as Mariona Caldentey fires a shot in from 25 yards but it's straight at the Finland keeper, who catches it and goes to ground.

  10. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Spain 0-1 Finland

Finland have really spotted a weakness in Spain's team here. Another long ball is played over the top to Linda Sallstrom, who this time volleys wide from an impossible angle.

Pinball in the Finland boss. Finnball if you will, but they clear.

    Spain 0-1 Finland

It's been all Spain since the goal and they win a second corner. Can they get back on level terms nice and early?

What a start for the underdogs. There are only 50 seconds on the clock when Linda Sallstrom, who scored 10 times in qualifying, races clear and hits a low shot into the corner and it bounces in off the post. The Finland flags are flying among their jubilant fans too.

The Finland bench run as one to mob the goalscorer and the tournament favourites find themselves a goal down inside a minute.

If you'd asked me to guess who might score after 49 seconds, it wouldn't have been Finland!

Spain have a corner but their cross sails out of play.

  15. 'Spain won't panic'published at 17:05 British Summer Time 8 July 2022

    Spain 0-1 Finland

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on BBC Two

Spain are just caught napping at the back. The goalkeeper got a touch to it, but I'm sure she will look back at that and not be particularly happy. It's the worst possible start for Spain, but they won't panic.

    Oh my!!

Is a major shock on the cards after only 49 seconds?

Linda Sallstrom runs onto Anna Westerlund's long ball over the top, bursts into the box and holds her nerve to shoot in via the inside of the post. The keeper gets a touch but can't keep it out.

There's lots of anticipation going into the competition. The players have been working hard for months to get into this position. Now it's just about giving a good performance and setting the tone for the tournament.
