Northern Ireland had the joy of their first-ever tournament goal in defeat by Norway on Thursday night.

This evening, however, the feeling will be more one of disappointment for Kenny Shiels' side after they lost 2-0 to an Austria team that they felt they were capable of beating.

They fell behind to an early goal from Katharina Schiechtl, who was unmarked from close range to tap in, before Katharina Naschenweng sealed Austria's win with a fine strike a few minutes from time.

Northern Ireland were second best for the majority of the match, but rallied at the start of the second half when they mounted a number of attacks.

With England to come in their final match on Friday, the loss leaves them with an extremely slim chance of reaching the quarter-finals in what is their maiden major tournament.

"Winning the match is important, but I have a priority in my head where if it looks like we won't win it, let's give the younger ones experience. They'll be around for a lot longer yet.

"I think we've not got a good future yet because we're going to be losing good experienced players. Have we got enough to challenge in the future? Not yet.

"We have to improve the under 19s. Some of our players are not ready against these types of opponents. But they keep getting to experience this."

Northern Ireland manager Kenny Shiels speaking to BBC One: "They weren’t that much better than us but they were in the key areas. 2-0 is probably about right.

"You look at where we are and where Austria are and the level they’ve reached in the women’s game. They have one of the best academies in Europe and are really tough opponents. The players are gaining experience from these tough games.

"We’ve reached this level too soon."

Austria looked on course to win anyway, but this late strike from Katharina Naschenweng doubled their lead and made sure of victory.

Northern Ireland defender Sarah McFadden, speaking to BBC One: "We put so much into the first half. In the second half we came at them but we just didn’t get a clear-cut chance. We thought today was going to be our first three points at this tournament.

"We thought we’d go out in the second half and get a goal but Austria have two or three superstars playing in top leagues in Europe. When the going gets tough they can really turn the screw.

"These Northern Ireland girls are so lucky with the future they have in front of them. To come out and play in front of these amazing fans, how can that not motivate you?"

Northern Ireland were always going to be well up against it in their bid to make it through to the knock-out stages.

The chances of that happening are now slimmer than ever after this evening's loss.

They now need Norway to beat England in the other match in Group A tonight if they are to go into their last match, against the hopes, still with a chance of going through.

Victory for Austria keeps Irene Fuhrmann's team in the hunt for a quarter-final place before their final game with Norway on Friday.

A win for England tonight would send them through to the quarter-finals as group winners.

The Northern Ireland squad are going through their warm-down routine.

That was another tough night for them in Southampton against a good side, but they stayed in the game throughout.
