It is hot in Southampton today. I mean really, really hot.

I've been more than tempted to jump onto the pitch so the sprinklers can cool me down.

It’s was 22 degrees at 10am this morning and has kept on rising. Temperatures are set to hit as high as 26 or 27 during Northern Ireland’s game with Austria at this evening.

It’s bound to play a part, and I’ve heard there could be water breaks introduced in the early kick-off to help combat the soaring heat. In his press conference manager Kenny Shiels said he wasn’t a fan of water breaks but would be happy for them to be introduced if the temperatures were extreme.

Also, Austria had an extra day of rest heading into this one. Could that be significant?

Austria v Northern Ireland (17:00 BST)

Northern Ireland's major tournament debut was certainly not short on storylines.

A captain not fit enough to start, a historic first-ever goal on such a stage and a star striker suffering an ACL injury that has forced her out of Euro 2022.

That was Thursday's defeat against Norway but, as Kenny Shiels' squad are quickly finding out, things move at a rapid pace at major tournaments.

So, here they are, back at St Mary's to face Austria on matchday two in Group A. With the Austrians losing to hosts England in their opener, both sides will know they probably have to win tonight to have a realistic chance of reaching the knock-out phase.

"It's winnable" seems to be the general message from the Northern Ireland camp, with the players hoping the nerves that were evident early on against Norway are now out of the system.

It's a third meeting in eight months between the sides, with Austria - playing in the Euros for the second time - winning one and drawing one of what were two tight World Cup qualifiers.

Can one of these sides get their first win at Euro 2022?
