You can already sense the urgency in the Italian players. They know they need a result here and they're not going to leave anything to chance.

They are snapping into tackles, harrying and hassling the Iceland players.

Strong work from Italy keeper Laura Giuliani. A free-kick is pumped into the box by Iceland but the number one stand tall to catch it amongst a host of players.

Valentina Giacinti is a bit too eager to win the ball back high up the pitch. She charges into an Iceland defender, making it too easy for the official to award a foul.

Italy just need to find that quality now, in and around the box.

Oh, almost a disastrous backward header to her keeper from Valentina Bergamaschi. Iceland forward Berglind Thorvaldsdottir is in the hunt but is just beaten to the ball by Laura Giuliani.

Italy have actually responded pretty well to that early goal. They are seeing plenty of the ball and are threatening.

Valentina Bergamaschi fires a shot from range wide of goal.

Better from Italy. They work it well down the right before delivering a cross that Martina Piemonte tries to hook towards goal but sees blocked by an Iceland defender.

    Italy 0-1 Iceland

Iceland are in the hunt for a second. Italy fail to properly clear a corner and it allows Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir to fire a shot over. It actually takes a deflection but the officials miss it.

I think there was something like 159 seconds on the clock when the ball hit the back of the Italian net at phenomenal pace.

The Iceland fans - and they have packed this stadium - went crazy while Italy have now conceded six times in 93 minutes at Euro 2022.

That sets this game up very nicely.

    Italy 0-1 Iceland

Just how much damage will that early Iceland goal do to a fragile Italy? They were smarting from the five goals they conceded to France.

You'd forgive them for worrying about where this is going?

Remember that Italy will be out if they lose.

    Italy 0-1 Iceland

Italy look to hit back immediately. The work the ball wide left for Martina Piemonte to fire in a cross but she moved a tad early and is caught offside.

Wow, a wonderful Iceland goal from a long throw.

They will be dangerous from set pieces and that physicality of Iceland's might prove to be difficult for Italy.

    Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir

    Dream start for Iceland!

I was just waxing lyrical about the qualities of Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir with her feet, but she's pretty good with her hands too. She launches a ling throw into the Italy box that causes chaos. The Italians can't clear and Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir slices a shot into the net.

Iceland immediately get the ball out to Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir. She's one to watch for Iceland. Quick, strong, skilful - a nightmare for defenders.

That Iceland anthem goes on a bit doesn't it?

The Italians follow the mandate that their national anthem must be belted out at maximum volume.

After all that we are under way.

With France leading Group D after their win over Italy and firm favourites to qualify top - most likely with a 100% record - second spot is very much up for grabs.

A win for Iceland feels an absolute necessity here if they are to take it, with France to come in their final game.

An Italy win gives them a great chance and a huge confidence boost ahead of taking on Belgium in the final round of group fixtures.

Iceland created a lot the other day but have to be more clinical, especially today. It will be a game with different styles, we'll see what they can come up with.

The bloke in the black cap having selfies in the fan park is no ordinary supporter. He is Gudni Johannesson, the president of Iceland.

He's used to meeting politicians, presidents and dignitaries, external from all over the world but today he has cleared his diary to fly over to Manchester and cheer on Iceland at Euro 2022.

"It's an honour and a privilege to be here," Johannesson tells BBC Sport.

"I remember being at Euro 2017 in the Netherlands and what a great tournament that was."

Johannesson joined fans on the march to the Academy Stadium from the fan park. Talk about man of the people.

His visit comes after Iceland's prime minister Katrin Jakobsdottir visited the Academy Stadium on Sunday for Iceland's 1-1 draw with Belgium.
