But everyone is in good spirits with renditions of Three Lions and Sweet Caroline being sung at the tops of their voices.

  2. Greenwood for Daly?published at 19:46 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

I thought if Sarina Wiegman was going to make one change it might have been Alex Greenwood for Rachel Daly. I thought it might help against a team who like to press down the left to have a naturally left-sided player.

The young players in the team play in the WSL and love entertaining the crowd. They're used to it.

I would imagine Jill Scott will be keeping players calm.

    My prediction is 4-0.

I think this going to be so even. It could be decided by extra time and possibly penalties. If it goes to penalties then my heart and head says Sweden.

England’s Women’s European Championship quarter-final win over Spain made it 10 consecutive victories for the Lionesses in all competitions: the longest ever winning streak in their history.

Georgia Stanway’s extra-time winner last time out against Spain was the 100th goal England have scored under manager Sarina Wiegman (P18 W16 D2 L0 – 5.6 goals per game on average under Wiegman), while the 16 goals they have managed at this year’s Women’s Euros can only be bettered by Germany’s haul of 21 at the 2009 tournament.

  6. 'I wasn't there. That's history' - England boss on past failurespublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

England boss Sarina Wiegman to BBC One: "We've prepared for this game. We've talked about what can happen. We’ll try to play our style but things can happen – things can go well or be hard. We’ll try to stick with our plan and stay together. Hopefully that brings success."

On previous failures: "I wasn’t there. That’s history. We are in a good place. Everyone is fit. Everyone delivers all the time. I hope we play to our strengths."

Sarina Wiegman can keep it calm. We’re talking about a bunch of women who years ago couldn’t see professional football as a living and now they're living the dream.

There is a lot of pressure on them to get past this stage but this is what they’ve been training for - everything has led to this day.

What I’ve seen from this team, everyone is embracing what’s going on.

When you look at what England are capable of doing. The reason we’re favourites is we're at home and scoring a lot of goals. Sweden have just done what needed to be done.

You could feel in Spain game if we get one we would win it with the crowd behind us.

England and Sweden are both being put through their paces warming up on the Bramall Lane pitch.

And head coaches Sarina Wiegman and Peter Gerhardsson are keeping a close eye on proceedings.

But they have spent more time watching how the opposition is warming up than looking at their own players.

  11. You again?!published at 19:40 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

This will be the seventh meeting between England and Sweden at the Women’s European Championship, the third most played fixture in the competition’s history (after Germany v Norway and Germany v Italy).

England have won just one of the previous six (D1 L4), with that win coming in the second leg of the 1984 final and ultimately resulting in a penalty shootout defeat.

The Lionesses will be contesting a semi-final at the Women’s Euros for the sixth time (1984, 1987, 1995, 2009, 2017 & 2022), however they have progressed from just two of the previous five. The Lionesses were eliminated at this stage at the last edition, losing 3-0 to hosts and eventual winners Netherlands in 2017.

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

I think we've seen all the way through - they've dealt with so many different challenges. They won't be thinking we've exited before in semi-finals - they'll be thinking we reached the final in 2009.

  13. 'Mentality is good'published at 19:38 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman appears to have this Euros lark figured out. Having led the Netherlands to the trophy in 2017, she's now two games from following suit with England. Ahead of tonight's game, she said the "mentality has been really good" from her players.

"I have only seen good mentality," said Wiegman, who took over in September.

"The confidence in the team has grown, the resilience is good.

"We're really accountable for each other. We're really strong and we can handle some setbacks.

"I think it will be a very tight game [against Sweden]. They have always performed really well. It is going to be difficult, totally different to what we faced against Spain.

"We're very excited of course. Everyone is so focused and so excited. We just hope we can play our style of play and we can win.

"We are aware of their strengths. It will be two opponents who are really equal so we are prepared."

It's filling up quickly at Bramall Lane as we get closer to kick-off. The noise when the players came out to warm-up was decent. Sarina Wiegman gave a rallying call to the supporters in her press conference yesterday. Can they carry England over the line against a very good Swedish side tonight?

  15. 'Putting smiles on faces'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

    England

England forward Fran Kirby: "As the tournament has grown, we have been walking down the river and seen people leaning over and going, 'Well done, girls - we're supporting you'.

"If we get the chance to win in the semi-final and get through to the final, I think it will be incredible for people in this country to have something to celebrate and enjoy. We want to do that as much as possible.

"As much as we want to win, we want to put a smile on people's faces. They may be going through a hard time in terms of the fuel costs and the cost of living now, so hopefully we can give people an escape for 90-plus minutes when they turn their TVs on."

  16. 'A special feeling'published at 19:35 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

    Sweden

Sweden forward Kosovare Asllani: "It will be two teams looking to play attacking football. At the same time we think it will be a game that suits us. Playing against the home nation is a special feeling and an exciting feeling.

"They are good defensively and offensively, but in our squad [we have that] too. We are excited. We will play a fantastic team but, at the same time, we know it will be special to play against the host nation."

On England going close to winning the European Women's Championship in the past...

What's happened in past meetings , it doesn't mean anything. It's not about what has happened in the past. That is a psychological battle that the press love to put in front of you. And it's a battle you do not need.

This is a completely different game. This is the team in front of you - go do the job. It's going to play out completely differently, the scenarios on the pitch are going to be completely different and the tactics are both going to be different from both sets of managers.

No football game is ever the same. That's how you have got to look at this.

Bramall Lane is expected to be full tonight for this semi-final, continuing the trend throughout this tournament of big crowds backing England. A possible 32,000 then to roar on the Lionesses.

This is only adding to what has been a record attendance for the event, with the cumulative crowds record for a Women's Euros broken during the group stage, when there were still 15 games remaining.

On top of this, around 5,000 spectators are anticipated to attend the free fan park which has been set up in Trafalgar Square, London.

  20. 'It is important girls are watching these games'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 26 July 2022

    England v Sweden (20:00 BST)

    Kelly Smith
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sarina [Wiegman, England manager] has been there and done it. She won the Euros in 2017 with the Netherlands. It was the home tournament there so the fans really had a big part to play in it like it's a home tournament for England. She's got that experience and I think England in the past have not had a manager with that much experience and knowledge to win games. I think tactically she's been very, very good.

She knows her strongest team, her starting eleven, she hasn't changed and veered away from that so I expect her to probably play the same eleven again tonight. It's just a brilliant occasion for us to really enjoy women's football in this country.

I think we've seen a fantastic display of football, high level players and most of these players play in the Barclays Women's Super League in this country. So for those fans that we've galvanised to come out and support the home teams in this tournament, we need bums on seats to help grow the game here.

And it's also important that these girls that are watching the games, the Visa ball girls are at the side of the pitch and they're looking at their role models, so we've really inspired all these young girls, so now it's about giving them access to play football in schools because we don't want this opportunity to be missed.
