Eddie Howe gets a warm welcome from the Newcastle fans, with a banner unveiled in the Gallowgate End which says: "Make each day your masterpiece."

It's a phrase Howe likes to use in his coaching, as he applauds all four sides of an expectant St James' Park.

    Newcastle v Norwich (19:30 GMT)

Norwich City have taken seven points from their last three Premier League games. They had recorded six points in the previous 25.

Newcastle United are the sixth Premier League team to fail to win any of their opening 13 games. The only side to avoid relegation after such a start were Derby County in 2000-01.

No team has failed to win in their first 14 matches and stay up.

This is Newcastle's first Premier League home match bottom of the table since October 2015. That day they beat Norwich 6-2, with Georginio Wijnaldum scoring four times.

    Newcastle v Norwich (19:30 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

I hate to use the phrase 'must-win' but that is what this game is for Newcastle, who haven't managed a single victory in their first 13 games and are entering the desperation stage of their season.

It's a big night for next-to-bottom Norwich too, but they come into it unbeaten under new boss Dean Smith and having taken seven points from their past three games.

I think the home crowd will play a big part here, because they realise relegation is staring them in the face. That might be enough to get Newcastle over the line, and get them a win - at last.

    Prediction: 2-1

Newcastle are unbeaten in their past nine home league games against Norwich (won seven, drawn two), since a 2-0 defeat in September 1988.

There has been a hat-trick in each of the past three league campaigns in which the sides have met - Georginio Wijnaldum, Dwight Gayle and Teemu Pukki.

  14. Will it be Howe's 'memorable moment'?published at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2021

    Newcastle v Norwich (19:30 GMT)

    Alistair Magowan
BBC Sport at St James' Park

It's wet at St James' Park but about 10 degrees warmer than it was on Sunday and Monday so a perfect night to get your first win of the season. It's a massive game for Newcastle seven weeks after the club's £305m takeover.

Eddie Howe will be in the home dugout for the first time, too. It makes a change from hearing the cheers through his hotel window because of Covid-19, when they drew with Brentford a week last Saturday.

He says it will be "a memorable moment" tonight but you suspect only if his team wins.

  20. 'Why Newcastle have to win their next two games'published at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2021

    Newcastle v Norwich (19:30 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
    Newcastle United's all-time top scorer

There are no ifs or buts about it - Newcastle's season is really all about their next two games, Norwich on Tuesday and then Burnley on Saturday.

They are both at St James' Park, and they are both must-win matches for Eddie Howe's side.

Even six points probably won't lift Newcastle out of the Premier League's bottom three because their goal difference is so bad.

But two wins are imperative because that would at least put them in touch with the teams just above the drop zone, with an extremely tough run of games to follow.
