Manchester United

Former Manchester United player, coach and caretaker manager Michael Carrick, talking to BBC Sport: "I feel quite good. I feel quite calm which is quite satisfying because I’ve made the right decision. It has been a rollercoaster week thinking about the decision – it has taken a lot of time and effort in that way. I’m convinced it is the right decision – I’ve been here 15 and a half years because you have to commit everything here. I owe my family a little bit of time, I really owe them that. It just feels like the right time. I had a gut feeling and it feels like a perfect time.

"I’ve told the boys that I’ll be here and I’ll definitely be going in the away end and supporting them from there. I’m really looking forward to that side to be honest and enjoying football again.

"We are a close group. It wasn’t easy telling the players. In some ways you feel like you’re leaving them in the lurch but sometimes you have to do what’s right. I’ve loved working with them – they are a terrific group of players.

"I honestly couldn’t have hoped for anything more. I woke up in a weird place this morning, not many people knew what was going to happen obviously. I told the players to play with emotion and the atmosphere and their responsibilities to trigger it off. It was like an old-school classic and hopefully the boys will go on to enjoy more nights like this in the future.

On the conversations he's had with Ralf Rangnick: "They have been little ones to be honest. I was conscious of making my decision before any real conversations with Ralf. I wanted to be clear cut. It was nothing personal at all. He’s got a good group of players to work with and hopefully we’ll look back at this being a big result."

Manchester United

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes talking to BBC Sport: "I was really mad at him [Michael Carrick] in Villarreal but that’s the life of a coach. I see a great future for him as a coach. He knows how to speak to players. If he gets a chance he can be a top coach."

On Cristiano Ronaldo taking the penalty: "We didn't have a chat. I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself. It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn’t matter who gets on the penalty."

On Ralf Rangnick: "Everyone is looking forward to work with the new coach. When someone new comes in there's new opportunities. Everyone has the chance to get a position. Everyone has to work hard to get the chance to be in the first XI. We will meet him tomorrow and start working on the next game."

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to BBC Sport: "I'm disappointed we didn't get something out of the game. When you concede three at Old Trafford it's unlikely you'll get something out of the game.

"I saw a lot of positives. It wasn't enough to get something out of the game."

On their opening goal: "We didn't know what to expect but the referee and VR checked and it's a goal.

"We started the game really good but then we gave them some momentum. We lost very simple balls. We couldn't get out of the press because we were defending deeper.

"In the second half we had total control and dominance but we made an error which cost us the game.

"We are here to win football matches. That's a lesson that doing that [playing like tonight] is not enough. We have to do things better."

Michael Carrick to Amazon on what he will do next: "I can honestly say I’ve given it literally no thought. I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow. Take the kids to school and see what’s next. I’ve been so wrapped up in this week. Whatever happens next happens next. No agenda."

Michael Carrick, speaking to Amazon Prime about his decision to leave Man Utd: "It’s not been an easy decision to make but I feel it’s the right one. I was going to take time off after I finished playing and it never happened. It feels like the right time to step away and what a way to finish.

"It’s 100% my decision. Over the last week I was conscious I respected the club and the manager coming in. I thought it was the right thing to do for the club and for Ralf [Rangnick] and I’m quite happy with that.

"We were in a situation where there was a responsibility to see these games through. The loyalty to Ole is a little bit of a factor but there were a lot of things that came into my decision.

"I’ve had great times, great memories and I’m proud of the players over the past three games.

"I just told them and they were a bit shocked and surprised, a bit emotional in the changing room. I held it together just about. It’s not been easy to keep it away from people but I had a job to do."

Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Amazon: "It is what it is. If you concede three goals at Old Trafford it is difficult to get a result. I was disappointed with the goals that we conceded.

"We've come a long way since the game at Anfield. We were able to maintain higher periods for longer. When we were in control we had a better structure and created chances. When it was 2-2 we needed to build momentum to get the win.

"There were a lot of things that I liked In the game. I liked the behaviour of individuals. When you score two goals at Old Trafford you expect to get something from the game and that is a regret, but that is our fault. When you see the game you would say we deserved more but that is what happens against this quality of opponent."

On Smith Rowe's goal: "I've never seen anything like that, no. That is the decision from the referee and VAR checked it and it was a goal."

United have conceded in 15 consecutive home games in all competitions, their second-longest such run, after only a 21-game streak ending in March 1959.

Arsenal

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: "We are a bit disappointed tonight because the team played very well. We could have got a better result. In this time of game you need to be clinical defensively and offensively and you have to do the perfect game because of the quality of Manchester United.

"At the end of the first half we started to drop for too long and we conceded. In the second half we had the character to come back but in this type of game I have to stand up and score that opportunity and maybe get a point for us.

"I should definitely score that type of goal but I will not give up and I will keep trying to score goals.

"Compared to the game against Liverpool at Anfield we did better today. We did something very clear and we tried our best. It was very unlucky because I think the team deserved better today."

That is shock news about Michael Carrick.

Former team-mate Paul Scholes wasn't too impressed that Carrick stayed in his role after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked but it did appear the former midfielder would be part of Ralf Rangnick's backroom team.

Carrick is due to speak to the media shortly.

Manchester United

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra on Amazon Prime: "I was really happy with the second half. Marcus Rashford was finally running through.

"Michael Carrick did very well. Everybody was waiting for Ralf Rangnick to be the saviour - now he has the team and it is time to deliver."

Bruno Fernandes made his 100th competitive appearance for United tonight.

Since his debut in 2020, he has been directly involved in more goals in all competitions than any other player for Premier League sides (79 - 45 goals, 34 assists).

It's a massive victory for Manchester United especially in the manner that they conceded and then it was an uphill struggle for them.

But they got themselves back into the game and full credit to them. It's been a tough time. They haven't got the results at home but Michael Carrick has done a wonderful job for the games he has been in charge.

Ralf Rangnick knows exactly what he needs to do. It's going to be a big job - no question about it. But it's a huge result for them.

Ralf Rangnick doesn't have to play Cristiano Ronaldo. He can do whatever he wants. Can Ronaldo press? Well, he's turned around and said 'look at that run I made in the last couple of minutes - the length of the pitch to get into the penalty area - I can do this. I can run'.

He's a fit guy. I'll be really interested to sit down with the two of them - the manager and Ronaldo - and say 'we're going to do it this way. Are you on board?'

I'm sure he'll say yes.

Former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer on Amazon, talking about Cristiano Ronaldo reaching 800 career goals: "You just have to sit there and say 'wow' and applaud the guy. It is his determination. It is very difficult to get to the top but it is staying there too. You have to get up in the morning and go again and the whole world are looking for you to perform every week. It is just phenomenal what he has done."

Manchester United

Michael Carrick has stepped down as first-team coach after the end of his spell as caretaker manager.

He said: “My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career. When I first signed over 15 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined winning so many trophies and I will certainly never forget the fantastic memories both as a player and as a member of the coaching team.

"However, after a lot of thought and deliberation, I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave the club.

"I want to place on record my thanks to all of the players and a special mention goes to the backroom staff, working long hours with such a great group of people has been a real pleasure and I have made some long-lasting friendships.

"I am, and will always be, a Manchester United fan and will come to as many matches as possible. I would like to wish Ralf, the staff, the players and the fans all the best for the future and I look forward to being in the stands and supporting the boys as a fan.”

The last two players to score the winner for United against Arsenal in the Premier League - Marouane Fellaini and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo just keeps going. It's a testament to his professionalism that he gets every ounce of his ability out onto the pitch.

I don't think up until he scored his first goal that he was playing particularly well but you give him enough chances he will take one.

Tonight he got a penalty and he puts them away as well. He scores important goals and it's a big, big win for Manchester United.

United move up to the heady heights of seventh in the table. Time to dream about the Europa Conference League?

Arsenal remain fifth, only two points above them.
