Looks a strong team this time from Chelsea. James has become a critical player for us, delighted to see him back.

Right, back to the London Stadium. It's a crisp afternoon but the sun is shining. Makes for a very different scene to what I'm currently viewing out the window at Salford Quays.

There's a huge inflatable globe tethered to part of the Quays here that is clinging on for dear life in the wind and rain. If I was sat in the bar behind it trying to enjoy a nice pint, I'd be very concerned.

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Burnley manager Sean Dyche welcomed Eddie Howe back to the Premier League with a warm text - but he wants to pile the pressure onto the Newcastle boss on Saturday.

Dyche succeeded Howe at Turf Moor nine years ago but has high regard for the work his predecessor has done in the top flight since.

"I'm really pleased to see Eddie back in the league and I texted him to wish him well when he got the job," said Dyche.

"You can already see what he's trying to do, add more tempo, get Newcastle on the front foot and he'll be figuring out how his belief in the game fits with the players he has.

"St James' Park is a demanding place to work. The fans love their club and they demand from their players.

"Eddie's been around the game long enough to know he'll have to get the team doing better than they have been doing."

    • Newcastle won both league meetings with Burnley last season – they last won more consecutively against the Clarets between September 1953 and September 1955 (a run of five).
    • Burnley are winless in their past eight away league games against Newcastle (D4 L4), with their last such victory at St James’ Park coming in April 1976 (1-0).
    • No team has drawn more Premier League matches than either Newcastle or Burnley this season (7, level with Brighton and Crystal Palace); the Clarets are unbeaten in five games, with four of them drawn (W1), last embarking on a longer unbeaten league run in June/July 2020 (seven matches).

    Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Burnley have turned themselves into draw specialists, with four in their past five games. They are still in the bottom three but they seem to be playing pretty well, and it feels like the results will come.

I'm not sure the same applies to Newcastle. Tuesday's home game with Norwich was a must-win, and they didn't win it. The more points they drop, even when they don't lose, just makes it even harder for them to stay up.

They have left themselves a huge task to survive now - they will probably need to win at least 10 of their remaining 24 games, and I just don't see that happening.

    Jamie's prediction: 2-0

It's not just the Premier League today, though. Oh no.

We've got FA Cup second-round action too. And you lucky people can watch Buxton v Morecambe from 12:45 GMT on BBC One, iPlayer and this page here, where there is also live text commentary.

There are 13 ties in total on Saturday, with 11 at 15:00 GMT. Former winners Ipswich and Portsmouth are among the sides in action.

  8. The big one...published at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2021

    Newcastle v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

Strange to be saying this on a day featuring the Premier League's top three sides, but the big game is probably the one at St James' Park.

Newcastle's profile has been raised quite a few notches in recent months following their takeover, leading to a fair bit of perverse interest in their current plight. It's football's equivalent of slowing down to view a car crash.

Today, the pressure is intense. It feels like they absolutely have to win if they are to give themselves a fighting chance of staying up.

If they get cut any further adrift, it may not matter who they sign with all that new cash in January.

West Ham v Chelsea (12:30 GMT)

I opened this live text talking about goal difference. Part of what has enabled Chelsea to notch up their +27 tally this season has been the most Scrooge-like of defences.

The Blues have conceded just six league goals this season - the lowest amount of any team in the top five European leagues.

Unless Thiago Silva had a visit from three ghosts last night, it's going to take a mighty big effort from West Ham to get past that rear guard.

The Hammers could really do with this man finding some form...

So what happened when the sides last met?

Back in April, Timo Werner scored his first goal in more than two months as Thomas Tuchel's side beat the Hammers 1-0.

In a tightly-fought contest, Werner, who had struggled to make a significant impact since joining for £47m last summer, started and finished the move that sealed the points.

The Germany forward fired home from Ben Chilwell's cross after a well-worked move involving Christian Pulisic - Werner's sixth Premier League goal since arriving from RB Leipzig.

West Ham struggled to create chances and finished the game with 10 men after Fabian Balbuena was shown a straight red card in the 81st minute after catching Chilwell's leg with his follow through while making a clearance.

Referee Chris Kavanagh watched a replay on the pitchside monitor before dismissing the Paraguay defender for serious foul play.

Wolves welcome back midfielder Ruben Neves, who was suspended for Wednesday's goalless draw with Burnley.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Naby Keita and Joe Gomez are both back in training though this game will come too soon for them.

Roberto Firmino is still sidelined with a thigh injury, while Curtis Jones is likely to remain out with an eye issue.

Burnley welcome back James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood, who were suspended for the draw at Wolves.

Phil Bardsley and Ashley Barnes remain out, while Dale Stephens is following Covid protocols.

Prior to this game, Chelsea had made 50 changes to their starting XI in the Premier League this season, the most by a side after 14 matches of a season since Manchester United in 2009.

Make that 54 now. And we thought Claudio Ranieri was the Tinkerman.

Suppose when you have a squad as deep and talent-packed as Thomas Tuchel has at his disposal, why wouldn't you rotate and keep the lads fresh?
