  3. 'We had too many unforced errors'published at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick, speaking to BBC Sport: "I was not happy with our performance. We had too many unforced errors and the early goal didn't make the job easier. In the first half we were struggling. In the second half we were better but it's a question of energy and physicality and we need to get better in those areas.

"We shouldn't be looking for excuses. We have to meet the demands in terms of speed, tempo, rhythm, transitions. We had chances to score but so did Newcastle. The good thing is we got the point after being 1-0 down but the performance has to get better.

"Edinson [Cavani] is a top striker who has been out with injury but it was good to have him on board again and to bring him on at half-time.

"We still have steps to go. Today was not a step forward. We need to decrease the number of giveaways and unforced errors and those steps of development we need to take.

"We have to take it game by game. We have physical games coming up against Burnley and Wolves. Results are on track but we have to get better than what we showed today."

  4. 'We desperately need Wilson and ASM fit'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "I'm very frustrated. I can’t praise the players enough. It was an excellent performance. I’m really pleased. We deserved to win and you’re left with the horrible feeling of not getting what you deserve.

"I think so [it was their best performance under him] in both disciplines. I thought we were good out of possession and a real threat on the transitions.

"We gave a lot to the match physically. Really good signs for the future.

"We had some really good moments. Allan Saint-Maximum at the start of the second half was a good chance. Jacob Murphy hit the post and Miguel Almiron’s shot looked like it was in. It’s good to talk about these moments. There have been games where we haven’t created.”

On the injuries to Callum Wilson and Saint-Maximin: “It’ll have a huge impact, two key players. Callum looks more serious because nobody was round him. Maxi hopefully won’t be any more than a few weeks. But it’s difficult to tell. We desperately need them fit.”

On whether they could be forced into more transfers as a result: “You’re talking to me seconds after the game. I need to digest it and see what the physios say in terms of time.

“Joelinton was very good today. His defensive understanding in that position is incredible. His attitude, work rate and energy are top level. His technique and ability to find space and control the ball in tight areas is of the highest level. I love the lads to bits. I’m really glad he’s performing so well.

“We are capable of beating anybody. We proved that today. I thought we all performed today. That’s got the be the standard we’ve set ourselves. We can be a force to be reckoned with.”

  5. 'I didn't like the performance at all'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick, speaking to Sky Sports: "I didn't like the performance at all. Today we didn't control the game apart from a few moments. It's all about energy, physicality and who wins the second balls. In all those areas we weren't at our best. The good thing is we got a point but the performance needs to be better.

"You have to be ready and able to win those direct duels and this was not that often the case. When we were in possession we had too many giveaways and even with the goal, that doesn't make things easy.

"Today was not a question of body language, it was a question of body physicality. If you want to be competitive here you have to get physical and this was not the case in many parts of the game.

"Our biggest problem was the mistakes we made. Even when we scored the equaliser we were not really controlling the game and taking the right decisions.

"We were one goal behind and we needed to take more risks. In some situations, including the goal, we were good and with Edinson we had another striker who was dangerous.

"Today it was not a question of formation - it was a question of how aggressive we were.

"In three days we have the next game. We can do better but we have to do it. We shouldn't look for excuses - we need to be better and get more physical. I was not happy with our performance with the ball or when we had to press. What kind of energy mode do we play with the ball and without the ball?"

  6. Postpublished at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "When we initially came in we thought Joelinton would play as a number 10, a second striker.

"We went down to 10 men against Norwich and reshuffled and played him as an eight and he was brilliant defensively. He has a tactical understanding. From then on I thought he had technical capabilities. You’ve seen tonight he’s been brilliant defensively. His work-rate and the amount of ground he covers is incredible. He’s a real team player. Such ability as well. He can only get better.

"We are very disappointed [not to win]. We deserved to win. The lads executed the game plan brilliantly. We had to be very good defensively in midfield. I thought we were very good and didn’t deserve to concede. How David de Gea saved from Miguel Almiron at the end, I don’t know. I thought it was in. Hopefully we’ve seen the beginning of a new team and how we want to play.

"We want more control in games. At the moment we have to take small steps to build to be the team we want to be. We have very good transition players, quick players. We really hurt Man Utd on transitions today. But for a bit more luck we could have won the game."

On Allan Saint-Maximin: "Naturally with someone like him you want him to have the ball all the time. When he’s on song there’s nobody quite like him. Key to our success is trying to feed him as much as we can."

On the injuries: "We don’t know. When Callum went down it looked a bad one because nobody was round him. He felt he'd been kicked but we didn’t see it. Allan, I don’t think is as serious but serious enough to bring him off. We are stretched. Difficult moments for us. The lads gave everything but we are thin on the ground in terms of bodies.

"I believe it’s 13 plus a goalkeeper [to have enough players for a game]. We’re going to be dangerously close to that number."

The lack of consistency from those officiating the game is shocking...it's becoming farcical. How is that only a yellow card for Ronaldo? They are making it up as they go along. You can guarantee if Shelvey halves Ronaldo like that he gets sent off.

    Grant, Aberdeen

How Van de Beek doesn't get a chance in this Utd midfield is beyond me... McFred are just awful

    Kevin, Leics:

Poor decision last week cost Liverpool and ultimately Crystal Palace too with a poor referee decision and now this week with Ronaldo. VAR was brought in to get rid of the howlers.... game has gone.

On Cristiano Ronaldo getting a booking...

He caught a glancing blow on Ryan Fraser but he was off his feet and missed the ball.

Cristiano takes enough hits himself but when your team is in trouble do not take risks like that so he got a bit lucky.

The referees are letting it flow a bit more and I prefer that but that was right on the edge and some referees would've gone further.

  9. 'Dsirespect Joelinton gets is a disgrace'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, speaking to Sky Sports: "On the overall balance of the game I thought we deserved three points. We created a lot of chances - the most we've created for a long time. So it's a disappointed dressing room but we know we can put in performances like that and that's a massive boost.

"The manager said we created a lot of chances and played well and it's a performance to be proud of. We need to do that every week now. We know if we perform like that we'll pick up points.

"We know how good Joelinton is and the disrespect he gets is a disgrace. Every day in training he's the best player and if you get him on your team in training you're buzzing because you'll always win. He's shown since the manager came in what he's been like in training. Everyone at the club rates him so highly. The noise form outside is so disrespectful and if you watch him enough you see how good he is. I'm so happy for him and proud of him."

Newcastle striker Joelinton: "It's a new position for me. I try to give everything for the team. Unlucky with the result but we can be proud of the game and we just keep playing. It was a hard game but we take the positives.

"I understand what the manager is asking from me on the pitch.

"Some days things don't happen but today I tried to work and I hope to continue this and do good work and hope we can win the game and improve this situation."

Newcastle had eight shots on target, while only facing four from Manchester United – since 2003-04 (as far back as Opta have this data), this is the first time Newcastle have recorded twice as many shots on target as the Red Devils in a Premier League match.

Newcastle have dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League this season (19).

They have only won one of the nine league games in which they have scored first in this season (D5 L3).

  12. 'Newcastle need their best two players'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2021

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Man Utd

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

We don't know how bad the injuries [to Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin] are. Callum Wilson was having a great game before he pulled up before half-time.

He's not just a goalscorer, he holds the ball up so well. But if Allan Saint-Maximin is out for anything more than a week or two then it would be a disaster. They need their best two players so the cost to them is absolutely immense.

Eddie Howe needs time to get these players back and also to bring in other players.

Can Leicester v Liverpool keep that run going tomorrow?

Gareth Evans: Joelinton is the man of the match there. Was everywhere tonight but the scoresheet. But really impressed with his resurgence under Howe. Seeing a lot of positives and hopefully with some recruits in January they'll be able to come back and get some key wins.

Regular Jon: Probably best if we don’t play for another 16 days. That was a disgusting performance.

Jon Evans: As much as you can praise Newcastle, United were awful. Probably worse than any game they played under Ole. Couldn't string passes together, space all over the field defensively and mis-hits and poor touches on the attack.

They only won six in total, staying up with 34 points.
