  4. 'When he reflects there might be an element of relief'published at 11:23 British Summer Time 20 October 2021

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

We'll see whether Newcastle are in a position to appoint a new manager, Names such as Eddie Howe and Paulo Fonseca have been linked.

It was always Steve Bruce's dream job to take charge of Newcastle United but he has received a lot of criticism from the supporters, a lot of abuse which I know he feels has gone too far at times.

I think he is a realist, whilst he would have said the takeover from a footballing sense is the best thing for Newcastle United Football Club in terms of the investment it will undoubtedly bring.

I think he is also a realist that he knew that it would probably mean that they'd want to bring in their own manager and I think in that sense what will be, will be.

Yes he'll be disappointed, any manager would be to lose his job but I think when he reflects there might be an element of relief as well because of the criticism and abuse that he has received that he's no longer in the firing line.

It came quite clear at the weekend that the supporters were not going to tolerate such a position for much longer, it's very very hard for any manager to survive in those sort of circumstances.

  5. Who next?published at 11:20 British Summer Time 20 October 2021

Paulo Fonseca, Lucien Favre, and Eddie Howe are the bookmakers favourites to take over in the North East.

And depending on which national newspapers you read, other managers being linked to the job at St James' Park include the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Ralf Rangnick, Antonio Conte and Roberto Martinez, who previously had Graeme Jones as an assistant.

  7. 'This might be my last job'published at 11:12 British Summer Time 20 October 2021

    The Daily Telegraph

Speaking to the Telegraph, external, Steve Bruce said: "I think this might be my last job.

"It’s not just about me; it’s taken its toll on my whole family because they are all Geordies and I can’t ignore that.

"They have been worried about me… especially my wife Jan. What an amazing woman she is, incredible, she’s just a fantastic woman, wife and mother and grandmother. She dealt with the death of my parents, hers have not been very well. And then she had me to worry about and what I’ve been going through the last couple of years.

"I can’t take her for granted, she has spent her whole life following me around from football club to football club and if I was to say to her tomorrow, I’ve been offered a job in China, or anywhere, she would say, 'Steve, is this right for you, do you want to do it?' And she’d back me again.

"I’m 60 years old and I don’t know if I want to put her through it again. We’ve got a good life so, yeah, this will probably be me done as a manager - until I get a phone call from a chairman somewhere asking if I can give them a hand. Never say never, I’ve learnt that."
