  1. Mullins: "We haven't got much to gain out of this tie'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2021

AFC Sudbury v Colchester United (19:55 GMT)

There's also a familiar name in Colchester United's dugout tonight in manager Hayden Mullins.

The former Portsmouth, West Ham and Crystal Palace midfielder knows his side will need to avoid a banana skin and be respectful to their non-league opponents.

Right, let's not forget there's another side in this tie.

Colchester United - the former FA Cup conquerors of Don Revie's Leeds United in 1971 led by man up top Ray Crawford as the BBC Two footage has been reminding us....

One member of AFC Sudbury's coaching team this evening has had a few "fairytale" moments in his career already, both in real-life football and not-so-real live football.

As someone who can unashamedly confess I was an avid viewer of Sky One's Dream Team in the 90s and early noughties, the name and face of Danny Potter did look very familiar.

In a former life, Danny found himself topping up his early-days playing income as a "goalkeeper" with Harchester United, the fictional Premier League club at the centre of the television sopa opera that followed the "eventful" on and off-pitch fortunes of The Dragons.

Today, he is goalkeeping coach at AFC Sudbury and as he told BBC Sport's Neil Johnston, he's hoping he can be a TV star for a very different reason this evening.

I hope he asked him if he's still in touch with star strikers Karl Fletcher and Monday Bandele.....

  4. Team newspublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2021

AFC Sudbury v Colchester United (19:55 GMT)

AFC Sudbury sit fourth in their league this season but come into this tie having been knocked out of the FA Trophy at the third qualifying round against Brentwood Town last week.

They make four changes from that tie, including Joshua Blunkell returning in goal and Marley Andrews in midfield. Reece Harris comes back in at left-back and Shane Temple in the number 10 shirt.

Colchester United make two changes to the side which beat Scunthorpe United last Saturday.

Ryan Clampin and Junior Tchamdeu replace Miles Welch-Hayes and Charlie Daniels.

AFC Sudbury XI: Blunkell, Keys, Harris, Turner, O'Malley, Grimwood, Frimpong, Ny Adzayo, Andrews, Temple, Shaw.

Subs: Adams, Askew, Clowsley, Gilchrist, Girling, Mayhew, Hipkin.

Colchester XI: George; Clampin, Chambers (capt), Eastman, Tchamadeu, Wiredu, Skuse, Chilvers, Jasper, Dobra, Sears.

Subs: Turner, Welch-Hayes, Smith, Hannant, Nouble, McCoulsky, Kennedy, Coxe, Cooper.

  5. Town turns yellow to cheer on Sudburypublished at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2021

AFC Sudbury v Colchester United (19:55 GMT)

Tin foil FA Cups in shop windows, bunting and balloons on every street corner, pets wearing rosettes.

You name it, Sudbury has well and truly gone to town with all the archetypal FA Cup-related home-made regalia imaginable ahead of this first round tie.

Our BBC News colleagues have been in town this week meeting those who have been showing their support for the Yellows as much as they can.

A good question to start off proceedings....

Well, for those of you who weren't as fortunate as some of us to grow up in the beautiful surroundings of East Anglia, let us educate you.

We're in west Suffolk this evening to get this FA Cup first round under way and the market town of Sudbury to be precise.

It's home to AFC Sudbury of the Isthmian League Division One North - or the eighth tier of the English football pyramid to put it into perspective.

It's a relatively short trip of just 15 miles for their visitors from across the Suffolk-Essex border this evening - League Two Colchester United.

  7. Turn on and settle inpublished at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2021

AFC Sudbury v Colchester United (19:55 GMT)

    BBC Two

We're off and running with our coverage from the MEL Group Stadium this evening on BBC Two.

Mark Chapman is joined pitchside, almost joining in the AFC Sudbury warm-ups in fact, alongside Leon Osman and Glenn Murray.

You can also follow the game right here at the top of this page through the BBC Sport website and app or load up BBC iPlayer to find the video stream.

If you'd prefer to listen to the match instead, we've got BBC local radio commentaries available for you from both BBC Radio Suffolk and BBC Essex if you scroll through the live coverage options at the top and click or tap to play.

So four leagues between the two sides in action this evening.

A chilly Bonfire night and the floodlights in full effect.

Sounds like we've got the makings for something special...

  9. Happy 150th birthday FA Cup!published at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2021

Well, well - it's that time of year once again.

Like an excited kid in a sweet shop, I'm absolutely thrilled to be kicking-off this season's coverage of the FA Cup first round across the BBC Sport and app.

What's more, the world's longest-running knockout football competition is celebrating a special birthday this season - the big 150!

    Media caption,

FA Cup at 150: Warrington's Friday night first round giantkilling of Exeter in 2014

It stirs up all sorts of imagery - Ronny Radford's thunderbolt strike for Hereford United against Newcastle United on a quagmire of a pitch, Sutton United upsetting Coventry City who had lifted the trophy only two seasons beforehand, or to bring it right up to date, Youri Tielemens' piledriver to win it for Leicester City at Wembley last season.

This weekend may well see the big names from Leagues One and Two enter the competition, but stretching back to the first weekend of August, we've already had six rounds of qualifying to get to this stage and for a handful of non-league clubs, the cup run dream is still alive.

We begin the weekend's action with one of those in action against a full-time team under the lights with a packed crowd inside a close-knit ground.

The perfect ingredients for a giantkilling you ask?

Well, stick with us over the next few hours to find out if we get one.
