  1. 'These players can do more'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Watford

    Watford

Watford boss Claudio Ranieri: "I am satisfied but I want more from my players. We played our football in the last 30 minutes. We conceded too many chances to them with the set-pieces. They created the goal but we created more chances in the second half. I have a very good squad and we have to show this. I am happy we drew at the end but I'm not happy because we did not play so good. I understand my players may be a little anxious but they have to play, they have to play.

"When we were desperate we tried to go more. We had to shoot at goal - we had to do something more. These players can do more. Fortunately they scored at the beginning of the second half and we had all the rest of the match to draw it.

"It is not important to win but I want to see my players play free. For example when we lost to Chelsea and Leicester, we tried football and tired to win. Today we were a little anxious. I am happy we never give up but I ask more from them because I believe in them and know what they can do. When they want to do something they can."

  2. 'I haven't looked at the table in two months!'published at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    Norwich 2-1 Everton

    Norwich City

Norwich manager Dean Smith: "I have not looked at the table for about two months! It is about where you finish at the end of the season. We will take each game as it comes and the next one against Watford is a big one.

"We have got four central midfielders out but the players who came in did excellently today. We have got some of our better players back – the likes of Grant Hanley, Tim Krul and Teemu Pukki - and that helps the younger players. It was unfortunate to see Tim go down at the end. It was a shoulder problem and we will assess it over the next 24 hours."

If Villa play as well as they did at Old Trafford a few days ago they will win with a bit to spare but new day, new game. Let's hope for no laughable VAR decisions in this match.

  4. 'We went into protection mode'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Watford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe: "Hugely disappointing because we were so close. I thought we dominated the first half. The start of the second half we got the goal and then were probably content, not intentionally, of seeing the game out and we were close.

"I think the players were so desperate to win that they went into a little bit of protection mode and didn't want to take too many risks. That brings the opposition into the game and Watford had their best period. We were within touching distance of a really important win which we obviously didn't get.

"There's a few things. We need the second goal and need to keep believing it's not over to get more goals. We need to manage the game better in the last phase. I think we invited it on ourselves.

"Chris Wood did well. He competed and gave us a different dynamic. I thought he was a little bit isolated towards the end of the game so we need to look at that.

"We can't be satisfied but that's what we have got. We need to get ready for another massive game next week. We saw it is a big opportunity before the game. Conceding goals late and dropping points has been a common theme this season so it's definitely something we need to work on."

  5. 'Minimum was not to lose'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Watford

    Watford

Watford's Moussa Sissoko: "We wanted to win and get the three points. We had to fight until the end. It was a big game for us and also for Newcastle so we said before the game the minimum was to not lose this game.

"They scored the first one but you saw a good reaction from the team and we deserved it. It will be a fight until the end of the season. One point is not enough but at least they are still behind us.

"Since the beginning of the season our weakness is we always react. We were passive in the first half and let the opponent do what they want. In the Premier League it is always tough. We have to start from the first minute. I am happy with our desire not to lose this game but it will be a big battle until the end of the season.

"After losing so many games it is always tough. We are working hard in the training sessions. Today we stopped that bad series of defeats and hopefully we can start a new chapter of winning ways.

"Of course it is our feeling [Watford can stay up] otherwise there is no point in playing the second half of the season. We are a good squad and the club, the fans deserve to stay in the Premier League. We will fight until the end. Let's fight and we will be happy at the end of the season I hope."

Bye bye Rafa, one of the worst managerial appointments in premier league history. Not sure who comes in but at this rate few of us care.

    Dom - Leicester

  7. 'A bad evening for Newcastle'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    FT: Newcastle 1-1 Watford

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Allan Saint-Maximin: "I think you can see my face. I am really disappointed. We tried to do everything to win this game. To concede a goal with only three minutes left, it's really difficult.

"When you are in this position you need a bit of luck. We need to wait for more luck to help the team win this game. They did not have a lot of opportunities to score but they did. It's really hard because we know if we keep drawing we will not survive but we have to keep going.

"We have a really good mentality. When they score in the 88th minute, and you have only a few minutes left, it is the same story. It becomes really difficult to score. It's a good draw for Watford and really bad for Newcastle.

"It's a really big defeat but we don't have to draw this game. We managed the game, had more opportunities and showed a good Newcastle. It's a really bad night for Newcastle.

"[Chris Wood] can give a lot to Newcastle. He needs more time to know how to play with the players but I think he will help the team. He is a big guy and can score important goals for Newcastle. We really need him to win games.

"We cannot just feel like it's finished. We know we have a really good quality and what we can do. It's time to stop talking and to show. We really have to do some things against it because if this keeps going we will not stay in the league. At the moment it is not enough."

  8. Elanga's chancepublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Aston Villa v Man Utd (17:30 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

Ralf Rangnick was impressed with Anthony Elanga when he saw him train on his first day as Manchester United's interim manager.

The Swedish youngster was involved the day after United beat Arsenal and although many senior players were on a warm down session, Rangnick was so impressed he actually thought about picking Elanga to start against Crystal Palace.

He didn't then. But does now.

  9. Tottenham 'surprised' by NLD postponementpublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Tottenham have released a statement following the postponement of Sunday's North London derby and it is fair to say they aren't best pleased.

The club said: "We are extremely surprised that this application has been approved.

"We ourselves were disqualified from the European Conference League after a significant number of COVID cases meant we needed to reschedule a fixture and our application to move our Leicester fixture was not approved - only for it to be subsequently postponed when Leicester applied.

"The original intention of the guidance was to deal with player availability directly affected by COVID cases, resulting in depleted squads that when taken together with injuries would result in the club being unable to field a team.

"We do not believe it was the intent to deal with player availability unrelated to COVID.

"We may now be seeing the unintended consequences of this rule.

"It is important to have clarity and consistency on the application of the rule."

No Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United today.

Ralf Rangnick explained ahead of kick off that he is out with a hip flexor injury and couldn't train on Friday.

"Hopefully he can play on Wednesday," he added.

Rashford, meanwhile, suffered a dead leg in training on Thursday.

    FT: Wolves 3-1 Southampton

    John Acres
BBC 5 Live reporter at Molineux

It's been an absolutely thrilling game, peppered with some interesting refereeing decisions.

Wolves go level on points with Man United in the table. We did see a worldie of a free-kick from James Ward-Prowse - free-kick of the season.

  14. Postpublished at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

Been a while since I've heard Loco in Acapulco by the Four Tops. The Norwich fans aren't going loco, but they do seem pretty happy as they file out. The Everton fans are going off in East Anglia, though. That 'sack Rafa' banner is still flapping about and they're chanting bile at everyone and everything.

  15. 'Damaging for Everton'published at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    FT: Norwich 2-1 Everton

    John Southall
BBC Radio 5 Live at Carrow Road

Norwich have just hung on for a priceless win but this is damaging for Everton. You can see the Everton fans on the far side and you can see the 'Benitez out' banner as well.

They were awful in the first half, better in the first half but it wasn't enough. The pressure grows on Benitez - one win in the last 13 league games.

    Neil Lennon
Former Celtic midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle never looked convincing. Even in the first half Watford were always in the game, they were slicker on the counter-attack than Newcastle.

There's still a lot of work to do for Newcastle, they're not focusing as a team. Kieran Trippier was excellent, though.

  20. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2022

    Norwich 2-1 Everton

    Big. So big for Norwich.

    Big, big trouble for Everton.

The game ends with Milot Rashica hitting the post with a dribbling effort from the edge of the box. It doesn't matter, though, as the whistle blows straight after.

The Canaries are off the bottom of the table. We wait to see what the fall out will be for the Toffees.
