That's it then for the opening night of FA Cup second-round ties.

Brave efforts from the two non-league sides in Gateshead and Stockport, who showed bravery to play and quality to nearly make it count.

However, the two League One sides in Charlton and Rotherham were those to charge on and take their place in the hat for the third round draw.

Will it follow the same pattern this weekend? Surely we'll get a cup upset somewhere?

    Until tomorrow. Good night.

  2. 'There was never-give-up attitude'published at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    FT: Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Gateshead player-boss Mike Williamson told ITV Sport:

"I think the lads are very disappointed, but I'm immensely proud. They didn't go away from the process, there was never-give-up attitude.

"The boys have been fantastic all season so I felt it was missed opportunities but we were fantastic.

"It's got to give us enormous confidence to go on."

  3. 'It was an edgy game'published at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    FT: Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Charlton interim-boss Johnnie Jackson told ITV Sport:

"It was an edgy game, a tough fixture for us. They're strong here. They caused us more problems that I wanted. My goalie has had to make some good saves.

"Deji Elewere is someone we've got high hopes for, I saw this as an opportunity to get him in the team, and I knew he wouldn't let me down. He had to defend really well and he has done it.

"As I keep saying, I've been in good discussions with the owners and they're moving along nicely, hopefully we can get something resolved fairly soon."

Charlton striker Jayden Stockley told ITV Sport:

"They were brilliant in the first half they caused us a lot of problems. it was a pivotal moment when we got the first goal.

"We're all behind Johnnie [Jackson - interim boss], we love him to bits and we'd love him to get the job."

  6. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

League One leaders Rotherham are now unbeaten in 18 games but you'll find it hard to find a game in which they were pushed as hard as this in that run.

Stockport were superb. They hassled and harried without the ball, and with it showed some real class and poise.

Only some key goalkeeping from Josh Vickers and desperate defence kept the National League side at bay, and a priceless first-half finish by Michael Smith proved the difference.

Both sides might be celebrating promotion come the end of the season, and tonight either would have deserved their third round spot.

    It's the Millers' prize.

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

Rotherham have lived a charmed life defensively a few times tonight, but somehow got a head, a foot or bodypart on the ball to deny Stockport.

The Hatters keep battering away, winning corner after corner. But just can't convert.

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

League One side Charlton go into the hat for the third round of the FA Cup, having overcome the dogged persistence of Gateshead.

Jayden Stockley put them in front in the first-half with a header and might be credited with the second too, despite Ben Purrington connecting with a half-volley.

National League North side Gateshead belied the gap in divisions, and were excellent, enjoying chances they should and could have converted to make it a different story.

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

Rotherham playing into corners now, trying to work the clock down.

That's a statement of respect to Stockport, who haven't stopped hassling all night.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:33 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

My word. Take a bow Stephen Henderson.

Gateshead pump the free-kick in, Mike Williamson hits the bar, Jack Hunter headed at goal, Henderson stuck out a paw, saved, then Louie Storey fires at goal and somehow the hand pops out again to block.

It seemed as though a goal had to come. Charlton's goalkeeper had a different theory.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:32 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Yellow card for Deji Elerewe, the Charlton defender, as he bundles down Paul Blackett as he chased a lofted ball through.

Wasn't the last man, but it was another simple ball over the top.

  12. Postpublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Really strong driving run by Gateshead's Greg Olley, who then curls a pass outside of his right foot in behind for Paul Blackett to chase.

Stephen Henderson comes out bravely, just getting there to smother as Blackett loomed for a chance.

He stays down the Charlton keeper afterwards, feeling that coming together, but it looks like he's ok to carry on.

  13. DISALLOWED GOAL FOR STOCKPORTpublished at 21:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

Paddy Madden buries a header at the back post as Stockport pump in a free-kick, but just as he's about to wheel away to the away fans behind the goal, the referee has his whistle to his lips and the flag up.

Offside. Rotherham were opened up there.

  14. Postpublished at 21:21 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Comedy moment for Jonathan Leko, who finished off giving Gateshead's Alex Nicholson twisted blood by slipping and shanking the ball behind.

Before that it was superb close control and balance. Talent.

  15. Postpublished at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

Couple of key saves from Ben Hinchliffe keeps Stockport in the game as Rotherham buzz forwards.

Freddie Ladapo put Ben Wiles away, and his strike was foiled, and then Mikel Miller tiptoed his way into the box for the Millers but his low drive was soaked up again.

  16. WHAT A MISS!published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

That was the chance to get Gateshead back in this tie.

Luke Williams threaded the eye of the needle with a defence-splitting pass and Macauley Langstaff raced after the ball and got onto it.

Once inside the box he created an angle for himself and then wildly scooped the ball over the bar with just the keeper to beat.

His hands were on his head and he had that glazed look which seemed to say: "How did I miss that?"

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

League One leaders Rotherham definitely need another goal to shore things up here, as Stockport continue to probe and press.

Ash Palmer connected with a swinging back-post set-piece but his header flew across goal and just wide.

Josh Vickers was left flatfooted, it just needed to be on target.

  18. Postpublished at 21:10 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Elliot Lee tries to scoop a free-kick over the wall and into the Gateshead net, but the Charlton midfield can't keep his effort down.

Good effort but Jacob Chapman was grateful to watch it dip over.

  19. Postpublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Gateshead 0-2 Charlton

Gateshead's fans are still roaring their side on, and Charlton are still wary of the threat.

That said, the ball is starting to find its way into the home side's half with a little more regularity.

Hard to keep your chin up at 2-0 down. The National League North side are still battling though.

  20. Postpublished at 21:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2021

    Rotherham 1-0 Stockport

Superb block by Ben Barclay, as Rotherham try to expose some gaps at the back for Stockport.

Ollie Rathbone was into the box, with Freddie Ladapo up in support, but as he squared it to his Millers team-mate, in dived Barclay to foil him.

    Should have been two.
