It's been some afternoon, despite the postponements, we've had ample drama and excitement from the English Football League.

Ben Brereton Diaz can put his stocking up with pride next Friday, having been a very good boy for both Chile and Blackburn this latter part of the year.

Likewise, Steve Cooper, who has turned things around for Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Whether you've been good or bad, there's more EFL action on Monday when Championship leaders Fulham host Sheffield United, then there's the EFL Cup quarter-finals, and once we've had our Christmas Day fun and frolics a week today, we'll be back with the Boxing Day programme.

Until then, stay safe, have a lovely Christmas and take care. See you on Boxing Day. Don't forget the turkey sarnies.

  2. Cherries fail to take advantagepublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2021

AFC Bournemouth fail to take advantage of West Brom's goalless draw against Barnsley last night, with their lunchtime defeat by Middlesbrough.

Blackburn Rovers have cranked the pressure right up with their thumping of Birmingham, winning five on the spin to go just a point behind the Cherries thanks to 19-goal Ben Brereton Diaz.

The picture outside the top six is equally interesting... Nottingham Forest, Boro and even Huddersfield down in 10th can hold claims to be in the hunt.

It's going to be some run-in this year, on this evidence.

Sunderland lose ground, being held 1-1 at Ipswich as the new Tractorboys manager Kieran McKenna watches on.

10-man Shrewsbury earn a welcome win, beating Cheltenham 3-1.

Plymouth beat Charlton 1-0 but no goals between Morecambe and Fleetwood.

Huddersfield recover from a goal down to end their four-match winless run.

Andi Weimann scored twice for the home side but goals from Duane Holmes, Danel Sinani and Danny Ward (who saw a penalty saved by home goalkeeper Dan Bentley at 1-0) mean the Terriers take the points back to West Yorkshire.

    Nott'm Forest 2-1 Hull

Forest take the points to keep up their push for promotion thanks to a second-half fightback.

Keane Lewis-Potter gave the visitors the lead, but Forest replied with a dubious penalty call that Lewis Grabban dispatched, and the game was won when Brennan Johnson finished off Grabban's cross.

Big win. Harsh on Hull who showed promise and battled away gamely throughout but a frustrating afternoon for boss Grant McCann.

Big win for Blackpool, their first in eight games and it's all down to the second-half substitutions of Neil Critchley.

Blackpool's Keshi Anderson cancelled out a Siriki Dembele goal for Posh in the first half, as the two sides were deadlocked.

Then Sonny Carey and Jerry Yates came on and scored a goal apiece to change the Seasiders' fortunes and continue the porous run for Posh's defence.

    Supersub part two!

Jerry Yates was the other part of the Blackpool attacking double change that Neil Critchley made in the second half and boy has he been rewarded.

Yates smashes home on the rebound after his initial chance was denied. Bloomfield Road is jumping now.

How precious is this for them?

After he's had that taste of international football with Chile, Ben Brereton Diaz will be thinking of playing in the Premier League.

Blackburn Rovers fans will be hoping that he'll be playing in the Premier League for them.

Supersub eh? Sonny Carey comes up with the goods after being teed up by Keshi Anderson to beat David Cornell and Blackpool are in front.

Carey missed a chance after coming on, but made no mistake this time. First goal for the Seasiders too.

Prior to this season Ben Brereton Diaz had never scored twice in a game.

This season he has one hat-trick and now four doubles.

The upturn in his goalscoring form since being called up by Chile is genuinely astounding.

Do we have any more excitement to come before the whistle shrills on this one?

    League Two update

Perhaps the upset of the day coming at Spotland.

Rochale, in no form whatsoever, have a second goal through a Jake Beesley penalty and now lead Newport, off the back of two victories, 2-0.

Tranmere set to leapfrog Newport into fifth as they still lead Leyton Orient.
