What a chaotic opening at Ashton Gate. Antoine Semenyo squares a perfect pass across the face of goal after just five minutes, which Andi Weimann gets on the end of to slot into the near corner and give Bristol City the lead.

The home fans are still singing when, a few minutes later, the referee points to the penalty spot at the other end. Scott High's shot forced a save out of Dan Bentley but Lewis O'Brien is then fouled in the box, and up steps Danny Ward to take the spot kick.

Bentley comes to the rescue again for the home side and dives to the left to confidently palm away Ward's strike to a massive cheer and ensure Bristol City's early lead is preserved.

As you approach Ashton Gate, before getting near enough to show tickets, there's an additional row of stewards and barriers around the perimeter of the stadium where fans and anyone else entering are being asked to show Covid-19 passports.

Some stewards are shouting an instruction to warn people to get their passes out as they approach, but just over an hour before kick-off and the whole process was running smoothly, with fans ticking through towards the ground with barely any hold up.

Beyond the barriers, you'd hardly know there were any additional protocols in place. People are milling around the food trucks and stalls on the edge of the stadium, grabbing some food or a pint before going inside, as they would on any other match day.

Squad Goals' League Two game of the day: Salford v Stevenage (15:00 GMT)

For Gary Bowyer and Salford City, this is a must-win game. The Ammies have a team full of quality players, proven at this level who are simply underperforming.

Seventeenth in the fourth tier is probably not what Gary Neville and the rest of his ‘Class of ‘92’ investors would have hoped for come Christmas.

And after last week’s defeat by Mansfield, Salford City’s players have the chance to give their fans and co-owners a bit of festive cheer at the Peninsula Stadium.

In Brandon Thomas-Asante they’ve got a man who can hit any side on the counter and the experience and goals of Matty Lund in the middle of the park could be vital for his side and Bowyer - the pressure is on.

As for Stevenage, the mission is survival and they’ve gone with the experienced head of Paul Tisdale to keep them in the league.

The former Exeter City, MK Dons and Bristol Rovers boss says there’s the makings of a side that can compete and is looking for his first three points in charge of the Boro.

Eight-goal midfield Elliot List has been the standout performer for Stevenage. If Tisdale can build a team around him, they may have a chance.

I’m expecting a cagey start but as Salford try to turn the screw, Boro may be able to get them on the break.

It’s the battle on the seaside!

Morecambe welcome Fleetwood to the Mazuma Stadium with both teams in need of three points.

The reverse fixture looked like it was destined to finish a point apiece until Cole Stockton’s incredible 94th-minute goal-of-the-season contender from inside his own half snatched all three points for the Shrimps.

Stephen Crainey is interim head coach for Fleetwood and it looks like he’s turning things around for the Cod Army, who come into this off the back of two consecutive wins in the past week.

Both sides will be going into this Lancashire derby full of spirit and confidence this afternoon.
