  3. Joe's League One Game of the Daypublished at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Oxford United v Sheffield Wednesday (15:00 GMT)

    Joe Thompson
Former Rochdale midfielder on BBC Squad Goals

    A fixture full of expectation.

I’m focusing on two huge teams just outside the play-offs, squaring-up at the Kassam Stadium.

Both sides are searching for some consistency.

Darren Moore’s men come into town off the back an impressive 4-2 win against Plymouth last weekend. It was a welcome win for the Owls after a little bit pressure had been on the Wednesday boss following back-to-back losses to Sunderland and Shrewsbury.

Oxford too were disappointing in defeat to new league leaders, Wycombe last Saturday have only one win in their past five.

Karl Robinson can be a little grateful his side are still only seventh despite that run and he’ll be hoping they can turn this form around as soon as possible.

Today would be a great place to start for the Us if they’re going to go one better than losing to eventual play-off winners Blackpool, at the semi-final stage last season.

I think this is set to be a fascinating fixture, for sure.

  4. Dan's Championship Game of the Daypublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Stoke City v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Dan Ogunshakin
    Contributor, BBC Squad Goals

Is there a more enjoyable team to watch in English football at the moment than league leaders Fulham?

Marco Silva’s side have started 2022 in blistering form, scoring 19 goals in their past three games - more than Barnsley have managed all season (16).

By putting six past Birmingham City in midweek, the Cottagers became the first side to score six or more goals in threefold straight games in 88 years and have already won 7-0 away from home on two occasions this season.

That electric form doesn’t bode well for a Stoke City side who have lost three of their past four matches at home, picking up just a solitary point in that disappointing run.

Sitting eighth with 38 points from 25 games, Stoke are still well in the play-off hunt and a moral-boosting victory over the Championship pace-setters could be just the lift they need after a mixed start to 2022.

Blackpool and Millwall are both firmly ensconced in midtable but a win for either today could kickstart a push for a top six finish.

It will be a poignant day at Bloomfield Road, as fans mark four years since club legend Jimmy Armfield died.

Sheffield United's excellent start to life under Paul Heckingbottom has rather hit the buffers in the past week and they'll be looking to get back on track at home against a Luton side who have won their past two.

Swansea's season is going nowhere fast just now. They're without a win in their past four matches and host a Preston side in decent nick under new boss Ryan Lowe.

  9. Meeting of minds as Blues host Barnsleypublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Birmingham City v Barnsley (15:00 GMT)

    Birmingham CityImage source, Rex Features

Some Birmingham fans started their matchday with a protest march aimed at the running of the Championship club by their owners.

Blues, who changed owners in 2016,are part of Birmingham Sports Holdings Ltd, led by Chinese businessman Paul Suen.

They currently lie 18th, in their 11th straight season in the Championship - and Blues fans are unhappy at a perceived lack of investment.

It's a feeling the fans in the opposition end can sympathise with.

Barnsley finished fifth last season but they've been awful this time around and start the day rock bottom of the Championship table.

  10. Can Reading finally get the rub of the green?published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Reading v Huddersfield Town (15:00 GMT)

    PaunovicImage source, PA Media

January can give plenty of people the blues and if you're a Reading supporter right now, you've got several good reasons to feel like that.

Veljko Paunovic has seen problems mount up game after game for his side as injuries, suspensions, international absences, player disciplinaries and broken-down transfer negotiations have left him with a threadbare squad to choose from.

Add to that a run of just one win in their past 10 league games and Reading are in certainly in need of a change of luck.

They face another stiff test this afternoon as Carlos Corberan's Huddersfield come to town, just outside the play-offs and unbeaten in seven.

But the Championship is nothing but unpredictable so let's see if this one busts a few accumulators.

  11. Will Tigers continue new owner bounce?published at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Bournemouth v Hull City (15:00 GMT)

    HoneymanImage source, Rex Features

Hull City will be looking to derail another promotion contender's form for the second time in four days as they travel to second-placed Bournemouth.

New owner Acun Ilicali was in the stands on Wednesday night to see them beat Blackburn 2-0 at home on the same evening his Turkish consortium had acquired the club.

It could be a rather different challenge ahead for Grant McCann's side this afternoon though against a Bournemouth side looking to bounce back from their late defeat by Luton last Saturday.

The Cherries have a game in hand on Blackburn and are level on points but know they need to keep pace with the relentless Fulham, who are five points ahead of them.

  12. Jagielka adds more steel to Stokepublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    Stoke v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Ged Scott
BBC Sport at the bet365 Stadium

It can take more than four new signings and a couple of wins to make a good January transfer window.

Especially when your next opponents are the rampant league leaders.

But, after weeks of injury and Covid-related wobbles, Stoke City look to be on the up again. Victory over Leyton Orient in the FA Cup, followed up by a 2-0 Sunday win at Hull. And they have new faces in the building, some of them older than others – most notably 39-year-old defensive rock Phil Jagielka.

That said, Michael O’Neill’s men, with early season confidence restored a little, could not ask for a more testing examination than playing against formidable Fulham, who have been hitting the back of opposition nets all season - and have astonishingly been averaging over six goals a game since the turn of the year.

Tony Pulis may have long gone but Stoke's home retains its reputation as a place for defensive meanness. The Potters have kept 10 clean sheets this season and shipped just 25 goals in as many games.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips keeps his place, although Tom Ince drops to the bench.

  14. Beleaguered Baggies look to bounce backpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

West Brom v Peterborough (15:00 GMT)

    Valerien IsmaelImage source, Rex Features

West Brom's recent run of form has left a lot to be desired.

The promotion favourites are without a win in four and are now in serious danger of dropping out of the top six.

The pressure is growing on boss Valerien Ismael and nothing less than a win against lowly Peterborough will suffice with the expectant Hawthorns crowd today.

Darren Ferguson's men start the day third bottom and even a win is highly unlikely to see them leave the relegation zone.

  15. Sky-high ambitions for QPR face stiff testpublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Coventry City v QPR (15:00 GMT)

    AustinImage source, PA Media

QPR underlined their credentials as play-off contenders last weekend as Charlie Austin's late header saw them beat West Brom and move up to fourth.

Mark Warburton's side go in search of a fourth successive win at Coventry City, a side who got their hopes of a top-six berth back on track last weekend with a thumping win at Peterborough.

No Matty Godden this afternoon for the Sky Blues as he recovers from an emergency appendix operation as they look to halt a run of back-to-back home defeats and stay in the top 10.

  16. Can free-scoring Fulham cope without Mitrovic?published at 14:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    Stoke v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Ged Scott
BBC Sport at the bet365 Stadium

Championship leaders Fulham have scored 70 times in 26 league games – the most in English football’s top four divisions.

They have a goal difference of +47. Comfortably the best too. Only Man City (41) and Liverpool (37) are even within 10. And an overall goal average of 2.69 a game – also the best, edging out Liverpool (2.61).

In Aleksandar Mitrovic, they have the Championship’s runaway top scorer with 27 in 25 games. However, the former Newcastle man is out today so his supporting cast will need to step up.

Harry Wilson, who has eight goals so far this campaign, is also out so the pressure will be on Neeskens Kebano (eight) and Fabio Carvalho (seven).

In their three league games since the turn of the year, they have gone goal crazy, rifling in 19 – seven at Reading, six against Bristol City and six more against Birmingham City in midweek.

Yet Marco Silva’s men do have their off-days. They have lost four - and even failed to score three times.

One of those off-days was a 0-0 draw against Derby in November when they were missing Mitrovic – and it was also the last time they came up against new Potters addition Phil Jagielka.
