  1. Post update

    Gareth Southgate

The 2021-22 season ends on a bitterly disappointing note for England and Gareth Southgate.

The World Cup is just around the corner, two games to fix the problems before getting the tournament under way on 21 November.

Have a read of Alex Bysouth's report from Molineux

We are back on Thursday when the 2022-23 Premier League fixtures are released.

    Until then.

  2. As it stands

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

England will need to beat Germany and Italy in their final two games to avoid relegation to League B of the Nations League.

  3. 'Build a system around Foden'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's up to the manager to inspire them and get them up for this. What about Germany, look at the season their players have had.

If you want to create for Harry Kane, it has to come from somewhere. Phil Foden is a genius, an absolute genius, he could be one of the most decorated footballers of the English game because he is that good and started so young at Manchester City.

He's one of the first names in their team but we struggle to get him in the England team. Build a system around him, he is one of the most creative players in the Premier League, he could dominate the game.

Give Jack Grealish the freedom, tell him to go and beat the full-back and take him on.

The players will be very loyal to Gareth because he is very loyal to them, it's a huge quality of his. Gareth is going to be criticised and rightly so. He is the England manager and the nation is watching to see what his next move is.

  4. Stat attack

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    Hungary

    • Hungary became the first team to score four goals in an away match against England since the Hungarians themselves won 6-3 at Wembley in November 1953.
    • Roland Sallai is only the second player to have scored as many as three goals against England this century, along with Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic (5).
    • Sallai became the first visiting player to score against England at two different venues (Wembley in October 2021 and Molineux tonight) since Sweden's Håkan Mild in 1995 (Elland Road) and 2001 (Old Trafford).
  5. 'I'm not sure Southgate is the man to take that next step'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Would Gareth Southgate get a job in the top six of the Premier League? This is the national team, you have to have the best manager in charge to manage them.

I think he is a fantastic frontman for England, he speaks incredibly well, has brought the team closer, with the public, the press, he has been great, but you have to take the next step. For me I'm not sure he is the man to take that next step.

What he has done has been brilliant. But this team should be doing better. This England team should dominate teams, the other team should not get a kick of the ball, they are that good, but the England team always plays on the back foot.

The best managers in world football want the day to day and you would have to look at another option whether that's someone doing a duel role for the World Cup.

If he [Southgate] was to step aside or be relieved of his duties there would be a lot of managers interested because they would love to work with this squad.

  6. Post update

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

The Euros final was a year ago now, football moves on quickly and this current England team look like it's going backwards.

Bereft of confidence, lacking in creativity, no identity and no goals to show for when the main man Harry Kane is misfiring.

  7. Stat attack

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    England

    Look away England fans:

    • Hungary became the first team to score four goals in an away match against England since the Hungarians themselves won 6-3 at Wembley in November 1953.
    • This was England’s first defeat by 4+ goals since May 1964, when they lost 5-1 to Brazil in a friendly. It’s only the second time England have lost by four or more goals without scoring, along with a 5-0 defeat to Yugoslavia in May 1958, and first time ever on home soil.
    • England have gone four consecutive matches without a win (D2 L2) for the first time since a run of five in June 2014.
    • England have scored just one goal over a period of four games for the first time since a run between October 2006 and March 2007.
    • England have failed to win any of their four games in June 2022 (D2 L2) - the only month in their entire history they've played more matches without winning was June 2014, drawing three and losing two of five games then.

Matthew Frost: World Cup - beat Tunisia, Panama, Sweden, drew with Columbia , then lost to Croatia and Belgium.

Euros: had one great result against Germany really. The other teams we beat we should be beating every time. Southgate not good enough. Too negative. Has to go.

  9. 'This team can win a World Cup if they are managed in the right way'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

What if this is the same in September and you have two performances where the team looks lost - they have looked lost tonight.

Then you have to change it and you will not give the manager time to implement his style. I didn't see anything from England tonight and haven't seen anything from them in the last four games.

I'm always been one where I don't want a manager to be sacked, but I'm not sure he [Gareth Southgate] is the man. There are other candidates that will be more suited to it and Gareth Southgate will be under pressure tonight.

This is the best group of players we've had in a long time and we're going to give up an opportunity to win the World Cup. I think this team can win a World Cup if they are managed in the right way. They have players who play for Manchester City and Liverpool and they should be achieving more.

At the Euros we were poor at times, the draw was favourable at times and also at the World Cup. Against Italy (in the Euro 2020 final) we saw the quality of the [Italy] manager to make sure it changed.

  10. 'Not the time to panic'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England captain Harry Kane, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, is asked about Gareth Southgate's future: "It's a really disappointing question to be asked. Let's not forget where we have come from.

"Gareth has been a key part of transforming this England team to one of the most successful sides we have had in the past 50 years.

"I know it's disappointing for the fans. It has been a disappointing camp, every now and then football throws up a surprise, we have to look at the big picture.

"It's the first low point I've had in five years, a really disappointing night. We expect to win these games, but it wasn't our night. We need to stay calm and learn from it.

"We've had two fantastic tournaments in a row. It's not the time to panic. It's a loss we're disappointed with but we need to stay calm and we know we have stuff to work on."

Micky Stevens: So let's see if I've got this right, because we got to 2 semi finals and a final in the last few years we should take this sort of lack lustre performance as being acceptable? We haven't won anything so why are we talking about semi finals etc??

  12. Post update

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

England's worst home defeat in 94 years, since being beaten 5-1 by Scotland at Wembley in 1928.

  13. 'Tonight is a chastening experience'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Channel 4: "We picked a young team with energy and when the game started to go against them it started to look that way, that is my responsibility in the end. At half-time we needed to go for the game and made changes with more of an attacking impetus. It left us more open when we were pushing and it left us wide open. Across the four matches, that is my responsibility, I tried to balance looking at new players, resting players we could not keep flogging but in the end the teams have not been strong enough in the two Hungary games, the other two results were positive but tonight is a chastening experience."

More questions now than answers? "We have seen you have to be at full strength. It was a important experience for a number of the younger players and we learnt a lot from the Italy and Germany games, Hungary are a good side and I think I have given them too much to do tonight. I understand the reaction to that in the stadium, this group of players have been unbelievable for their country and it is important for people to stay with them. They will still be strong going forward.

"In the end, this is about winning matches with England but tonight was the sort of night my predecessors have had experienced. I am not going to say it does not hurt but it is clear to me what we were trying to do across the four matches. The Nations League campaigns have put negativity and pressure onto us and you don't normally have that as England manager. It is my job to protect the players, the results are my responsibility.

"People will rightly say, 'what are you talking about?' We needed to see some things. We have had some unbelievable nights with England over the last four or five year but this is the other side and that is the reality of football."

  14. 'A night to forget'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    England

England striker Harry Kane on Channel 4: "A disappointing night. First half we created enough chances to score but it has been the story of our Nations League, we have not quite had the cutting edge.

"Second half was not acceptable after going 2-0 down. It is not the time to panic, we have to the heads up and come back stronger in September.

"It is our first big defeat in a long time, the defence has been structure of our success. A night to forget but we have to take it on the chin and move forward, we have to prepare for a big World Cup and will learn a lot from this camp.

"Let's not forget where we have come from, our fist final in 60 years, a semi-finals in the World Cup compared to where we have been in the last 50 years. I under the fans' frustration, we will keep working to try and have a successful World Cup."

On boos aimed at Gareth Southgate and his future: "It's not even a question I should be answering."

DJ WIlliams: England did well last 2 tournaments despite of Southgate not because of him. Tactically inept and leaving top creative players like Foden, TAA and Grealish out for players in teams who are mid table or nearly relegated.

  16. 'It wasn't good enough'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    England

Former England defender Ashley Cole on Channel 4: "Too many players were off it. They’ve been held responsible before and they take it on the chin when they have haven’t performed.

"On reflection they’ll look in the mirror and know it wasn’t good enough. They did have a few excuses, but they also came up against a Hungary side who were hungry and wanted it."

  18. 'Questions will be asked of Southgate'

    FT: England 0-4 Hungary

    Stephen Warnock

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

This has been a very below-par performance, very disappointing. Credit to Hungary, they have been outstanding. Questions will be asked of England and rightly so.

Questions will be asked of Gareth Southgate. He does have questions to answer.
