    England

Former England midfielder Joe Cole on Channel 4: "A shocking performance, the players were not at it and the attitude were wrong. I can understand the frustration of the fans.

"Does Gareth Southgate know what he is doing? Of course, he has taken the team to a semi-final and final but that was dreadful."

  2. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:35 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

    England 0-4 Hungary

An utterly shambolic night for England, thrashed at home by Hungary.

The knives will be out for Gareth Southgate now, it's just five months until the start of the World Cup.

  3. goal

GOAL - England 0-4 Hungarypublished at 88 mins

    Daniel Gazdag

This is now an embarrassment for England.

Hungary get a fourth of the night through Daniel Gazdag as the sub runs on to Adam Nagy's through ball, waits for Aaron Ramsdale to come out before lifting a delightful dink over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Gareth Southgate stands with a look of shock on his face.

No identity in a World Cup year.

    England 0-3 Hungary

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

    On Hungary's third goal...

The Hungary substitutes have made an impact. The header hit John Stones it was then set up and Nagy blasts it into the bottom corner. It was a sweet strike and Ramsdale has not had a chance with any of the goals. It's a nightmare for England.

On John Stones being sent off...

I don't think there's anything in it. It's an absolute disgrace of a decision. He runs into John Stones' shoulder. I don't see how the referee has given that as a sending off.

Hungary have been by far the better team, they have an identity. What is England's identity? I don't know at the moment and that's worrying in a World Cup year.

This is the best squad of England players I've seen in my time but we're not getting the best out of them.

  10. RED CARD FOR ENGLANDpublished at 82 mins

    England 0-3 Hungary

Already on a yellow card, John Stones steps across the path of Daniel Gazdag and the Hungary players hits the deck.

He doesn't need a second invitation and neither does the referee to pull out another yellow which equates to a red.

This is turning into a forgetful night for Gareth Southgate and his men.

    Zsolt Nagy

This is getting worse by the minute for England.

Sub Loic Nego has the chance to level but his header is cleared away.

The ball drops loose outside the box for Zsolt Nagy to hammer and absolutely unstoppable, 25 yard drive into the corner of the net.

    England are falling to pieces.

It still won't fall England's way as Harry Kane's looping header rattles the crossbar.

The skipper then wants a penalty under a challenge from Zsolt Nagy, but ref Clement Turpin is unmoved.

Won't be getting a soft penalty to pad his stats this time.

It's a magnificent finish, a great ball into him and it's so close to Ramsdale's feet he can't adjust and get down quick enough.

We needed a response from England and we haven't seen it.

Michael Pomar: Southgate's job in untenable in all honestly. But for the media who for some reason keep propping him up. This is as much talent in depth as we had in decades, it's being totally wasted and mismanaged.
