    Italy 0-0 England

Harry Kane goes down holding his face as a corner comes in. What's happened there?

    Italy 0-0 England

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bonucci really protesting strongly with the referee and feels that he's got a piece of the ball. It ricocheted off Sterling, but that is so much better from Sterling.

  3. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Italy 0-0 England

Harry Kane wins the ball in midfield and runs down the left. Phil Foden is screaming for the ball on the opposite side but Kane goes it alone and his shot is blocked by Leonardo Bonucci.

Shame it wasn't Son Heung-min in the box or else he'd have passed.

  4. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Italy 0-0 England

Reece James steps up... and sends the free-kick into orbit.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 48 mins

    Italy 0-0 England

Italy almost get in behind but Federico Dimarco's cross is well cleared.

Oh hello, a nice England counter and Raheem Sterling is fouled by Leonardo Bonucci right on the edge of the box. A yellow card for the Italy captain and a free-kick in shooting range.

  6. 'Foden and Sterling need to work better with Kane'published at 20:49 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

    Andros Townsend
    Everton midfielder on 5 Live

The two wingers - Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling - need to work better with Harry Kane. If Kane drops in when he likes to do, we need runners behind and need runners stretching the Italian back three.

  7. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

    Italy 0-0 England

Right, 45 more minutes of this.

England really could do with a goal. From open play ideally. But any goal will do really.

Sho: That is one awful half of football I've just watched. From both teams. From an England perspective so many players playing out position, no style of play, no confidence. Just awful.

Chris Mitchell: Not the worst first half but this team won’t trouble the big boys at the World Cup on this showing. Both wing backs and Sterling have been woeful but Foden & Bellingham head & shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.

Liz Tray: England are dull. Everything is Southgate's fault. It can't possibly be that these players are surrounded, weekly, by gifted foreign players who make them both play better and look better. No. It can't possibly be that.

    Italy 0-0 England

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Milan

Barely a chance worthy of the name apart from that early Gianluca Scamacca header. There was a small smattering of applause when the half-time whistle went. This may have been out of appreciation but more likely it was out of relief.

  10. Postpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

England have gone five consecutive matches without scoring in the first half for the first time since May and June 1985.

  11. 'Dier is really composed, really calm'published at 20:40 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    HT: Italy 0-0 England

    Andros Townsend
Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think focusing on the positive - I really like the back three, especially Eric Dier. Really composed, really calm as a real figure. He's communicating well with the two defenders next to him. He's the one that is looking to break lines forward. Always looking to start the England attacks.

  12. 'Little bit uncertain on the right-hand side'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    HT: Italy 0-0 England

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been a little bit uncertain on the right-hand side. Kyle Walker and Reece James - they haven't really been on the same wavelength with the ball. It's hard to see where that is heading at the moment.

  13. Postpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

If you're looking for positives, England still have a chance of avoiding relegation to League B.

  14. Postpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    HT: Germany 0-1 Hungary

The visitors lead at half time and are on their way to the finals of the Nations League as things stand.

Germany boss Hansi Flick is in animated conversation with his coaches and a piece of technology as the half-time whistle blows.

  15. Postpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

If you're looking for negatives, England have only scored one competitive goal since the 10-0 win in San Marino in November 2021.

Harry Kane's late penalty in Germany (a 1-1 draw) is their only goal in the four and a half games of this year's Nations League.

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:32 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

Not a great half of football.

Gianluca Scamacca's effort off the post after five minutes was the best bit of the first half.

  17. 'They can't get hold off the ball'published at 20:31 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

They can't get hold off the ball. The passing hasn't been up to the standards and there's ben too many misplaced passes. Not enough assurance when they're moving the ball. Italy just keep winning the ball back and getting back into possession.

  18. Possession is a problem for Englandpublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 23 September 2022

    Italy 0-0 England

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport at the San Siro

That's the first real counter-attack England have had. In this last 10 minutes they have struggled to get hold of the ball.

  19. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Italy 0-0 England

Phil Foden crosses for England from a free-kick. Leonardo Bonucci heads it behind and Declan Rice looks mystified as the referee gives Italy a free-kick and not England a corner. Not sure what happened there.

  20. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Germany 0-1 Hungary

Former Chelsea man Timo Werner has had just eight touches in the first half so far.

In comparison Hungary centre forward Adam Szalai has had 31, and got the all-important opener.

He has gone into the book though, for a hand in the face of Niklas Sule.
