In 2016 we qualified from pot five so it can be done and we actually won the group so stranger things have happened. We’re still growing, we’re still building and giving younger players that much-needed experience that they will need going into the next few years.

    Ian Baraclough, Northern Ireland manager

  4. 'We'll be better for experience' - Baracloughpublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2022

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

    Quote Message

We’re developing. You see players coming in and out of this, strangely enough, we’ll be better for the experience. We have three or four senior players to come in, I thought we were better this window than in June and we have given good experience to players.

    Ian Baraclough, Northern Ireland manager

  5. Baraclough reflects on 'game of two halves'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 27 September 2022

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

    Quote Message

It was very much a game of two halves – we were good in the first half and played well in possession. The response to their goal was good and we came back and scored a good goal but in the second half, we couldn’t seem to get things going. Things were breaking down, we had a stray pass from Davo (Steven Davis) which they capitalised on and then you’re chasing the game. We tried to change the shape and we were more open and they started to pick us off.

    Ian Baraclough, Northern Ireland manager

  6. Northern Ireland 'fizzled out'published at 22:01 British Summer Time 27 September 2022

    Jim Magilton
Former Northern Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

I think the goalkeeper’s at fault for two of those goals. He’s not playing regularly and he’s stepping onto the international stage and it’s a massive jump-up. You were waiting for something to happen, you were waiting for someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck and it didn’t materialise, it just fizzled out.

  7. 'Ineffective in second half'published at 21:56 British Summer Time 27 September 2022

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

    Keith Gillespie
Former Northern Ireland winger on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

Right from the start of the second half it was the Greeks pressing forward. The manner of the second goal is so frustrating because I don’t think we necessarily have the players to play out from the back like we do and we continue to do it and we continue to lose the ball high up the pitch and we suffered for it tonight with the second goal. Overall we created nothing, we were so ineffective in the second half.

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

A forgettable Nations League campaign comes to a conclusion with defeat in Athens.

On the plus side, the spectre of a relegation play-off was avoided thanks to a heavy defeat for Cyprus in Kosovo.

But, moving forward, it means Northern Ireland will be in Pot five for the forthcoming European Championship draw and that will undoubtedly result in a more difficult task for Ian Baraclough's side.

    Republic of Ireland 3-2 Armenia

A stunning second half of action which included four goal, two red cards and a penalty comes to an end as the referee blows the full-time whistle.

The Republic went 2-0 up before Armenia scored two quickfire goals to draw level with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Stephen Kenny's men were handed a lifeline as his side were awarded a penalty with just minutes left on the clock.

Robbie Brady stepped up and made no mistake with his spot kick, ensuring the Republic of Ireland pick up all three points here at the Aviva Stadium.

Into the sixth minute of added time and the Republic should have had their fourth.

Scott Hogan, who has been in fine form for Birmingham City, will be disappointed to not have at least hit the target.

Two red cards for Armenia, too. Utter chaos.

Robbie Brady keeps his cool from 12-yards out and sends the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

On his first start for his country in 18 months, Brady could well prove to be the difference for Stephen Kenny's side.

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

    Quote Message

It’s been coming. They’ve been dominating the play, it’s been all Greece in the second half and again we don’t close them down along the edge of the 18-yard box. This guy runs a long way to hit this and we just haven’t closed him down quick enough.

  20. goal

GOALpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 27 September 2022

    Greece 3-1 Northern Ireland

It's a peach of a strike from Petros Mantalos but Bailey Peacock-Farrell maybe should have done better.

There's no pressure on Mantalos and he picks his spot from 20 yards with a rocket of a shot which Peacock-Farrell can only get his fingertips to.

Greece are good value for their two-goal lead in what has been a very disappointing second half from the visitors.
