David Payn: There is no way that the Premier League can be considered the best. Nothing to do with the football but it's being undermined by PGMOL. As Frank Lampard says, it's incompetence.

  5. 'Something needs to be done'published at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Sport: “Mixed [feelings] in a positive way because the performance was great.

"In the first half to feel to be stronger team than City, we were organised, aggressive and created chances and they didn't - that doesn’t normally happen [against them].

"We expected in the second half h we’d get a bit tired and they’d have more pressure but other than a couple of moments, a great Jordan Pickford save and the goal I cant fault anything. We created a few breaks ourselves and deserved more.

On the penalty that wasn't given: "There is not a person who watches that in the stadium, and the VAR Chris Kavanagh had a minute and a half to watch it....there is not a person that supports City, Everton, Liverpool maybe that cant think it is not a penalty, so something needs to be done about that.

On support shown to Vitaliy Mykolenko, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ukraine: "The power of sport, we’ve seen in the last few days in many ways. I know how much heart is in this club from owner, to chairman, to fans, to players and we wanted to show that. when we have a player with Vitaliy on our side and Zinchenko on their side, and our fans and their fans together that is the unity of sport and a lot of people on the outside could learn from that as well.

On the atmosphere at the club: "One of the reasons I took the job was my feeling of growing up and understanding the history of the club and seeing them as first division champions and playing here and feeling what the crowd can do.

"They affect games and I love working in those circumstances. The next two or three weeks will be hard but from what I have seen today, if we keep doing that we will be alright."

Some clarification from the Premier League.

I'm told Rodri's handball was looked at but the VAR Chris Kavanagh didn't feel that there was conclusive evidence and that the ball was more in the 'red zone' than not.

The decision is a subjective one, but ultimately the VAR didn’t feel that there was a clear error.

  8. 'I only saw the referee say offside'published at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is Premier League. Second half was much better. Deserved win and three more points.

"Goodison Park has always been so difficult. When a striker go with Rodri and they defend really well it is always difficult. You have to find the situations and the second half was much better.

"We moved the ball a bit quicker, we attacked quicker. The second half they were a little more tired. We were solid behind, we don't concede much."

On possible Everton penalty: "I didn't see it. I only see the referee make offside so I think the action was offside first but I didn't see. VAR reviewed because maybe they suspect was handball but in the end it was not."

  9. 'We think it was clear cut'published at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Everton

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi on Rodri's 'handball' to Sky Sports: "My friends have shown me and we all think its a penalty. We can't do anything about it now.

"When I was coming off at the end, Ashley Cole was saying 'it was a pen' and surprised the referee didn't have a choice to see it. We think it was clear cut. The decision has been made, we have to get on with it."

Everton have 22 points from 24 Premier League matches this season (W6 D4 L14), their lowest tally at this stage of a league campaign (assuming 3 pts/win all-time) since 1929-30 (also 22), when they were relegated from the top-flight.

  11. 'Can we not be at peace with each other?'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Everton

More from Everton boss Frank Lampard: "We have to accept it. We have to take pride in the performance against a top team. If the table doesn't look great in a couple of weeks then so be it. It didn't look great when I came but I have seen big improvements. Don't look too much at the table for the next few weeks. I am not buying time with that, we are going to work. If we play with the energy and passion like we did today my feeing is we will be fine."

On crowd's support for Ukraine before kick-off: "That means much more than a penalty shout. To see Mykolenko the last few days has been a huge perspective for me. For anyone that has seen videos then to see Zinchenko.

"Can we not be at peace with each other? Disagree with each other but not see things that are happening at the minute."

  12. 'My three-year old daughter could tell you it was a penalty'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think on performance alone but when you play against City you understand how the game may go - possession against your, having to defend, to press to cover, we did it brilliantly.

"The first half was immense from us. I think we deserved something. They created chances in the second half, nothing in the first.

"Every player for the application for what they did, their braveness on the ball... I am very proud and on reflection we will look back and think 'what a performance'.

"We are a bit hurting because of the performance and of a huge decision."

On the goal: "I won't criticise individual misake. It is a little freakish. Cruel but that's football."

On not being given a penalty for handball: "I was calm, I was not shouting and ranting at him. I wanted to know if offside in the build up but I have been told it wasn't in the build up.

"Go to VAR, they have two minutes to look at it and to think they have not given that as a penalty when it strikes him on the arm, in an unnatural position. I have a three year old daughter at home who could tell you that was a penalty.

"We are fighting at the bottom of the table and they are fighting at the top. Decisions are crucial. I don't know what has to happen as a reflection of that. A mistake is when you have done something wrong and don't have time to think about it, they had two minutes to digest the handball.

"Even if the VAR says not sure, then go have a look. It is incompetence at best, if not that then someone needs to explain what it is."

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender John Stones on the possible Everton penalty: "I didn't get a good view of it when it happened. The ball went out and VAR checked and you are just waiting then."

Manchester City forward Phil Foden: "I was just praying, fingers crossed it was not a penalty. I didn't get a good sight of it but my heart was in my mouth."

So Pep Guardiola says the penalty wasn't given because of offside.

    Who was offside?

If VAR checks something, surely offside would be the first thing they check?

Why did they keep checking the handball afterwards then?

    So many questions.

    FT: Everton 0-1 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "I have to admit really important. The second half was much better for the consequences of the first half. Goodison Park for us is always so difficult. Good victory, another step.

"In general we controlled in the second half, not a lot because it was not possible but the second half much, much better.

"When the opponent decides the striker to mark the midfielder it is difficult with the spaces. Everton make a moment. It is difficult, we knew it. I said to the guys they are doing well and be patient and we will find the moment.

"We did everything to win. When you have that the manager will be alongside the players that is for sure. Have to try again and try again and in the end Phil was there and score.

"We were searching. We tried and we were there. We earned the good fortune. Everton has top players. Their quality is there, we knew it."

On possible penalty decision for Everton: "It was offside. There was VAR and the action was offside. I didn't see the image."

On title battle: "It is six points but one game more. Eleven games to finish the Premier League, the players we spoke to the team we have to win all the games. Against Tottenham, Southampton and today we performed who we are. Keep going and try to do it."

On fans showing support to both teams' Ukrainian players: "Thank you so much for all the people at Goodison Park. It was so emotional. It is not a nice moment for Zinchenko and the Ukrainian people right now. The people from Goodison Park were amazing for this."
