Sarina Wiegman said England must use this tournament as an opportunity to learn ahead of the home European Championship in the summer and they were certainly tested more out of possession in the second half.

There are still tougher tests to come too against Spain - considered one of the favourites to win the Euros - and Germany, who England face in Wolverhampton next week.

All-in-all, the hosts showed glimpses of what they can offer under Wiegman, but essentially lacked the ruthlessness needed to claim victory at the Riverside Stadium.

Fair to say Sarina Wiegman has set high standards and some aspects of England's performance fell below them at times.

Nevertheless they were a pleasure to watch.

England boss Sarina Wiegman, speaking to ITV4: "This was the competitive match we needed. We played a very good first half although at times we were a little bit sloppy. We needed to be a bit more ruthless.

"We were more sloppy in second half and we had some hard times but it was good to see how we reacted. We lost too many balls and needed to control the ball better in the second half.

"Our shape was good but we need to be more tight. Sometimes the space was so big out of possession."

Perhaps Sarina Wiegman will see this as a missed opportunity but you have to remember Canada are Olympic champions. Over the course of 90 minutes she will probably see it as a chance missed because they did dominate so much of that first half.

They created really good opportunities but they weren't able to capitalise. Arguably you could say Canada's defence was outstanding, especially Kadeisha Buchanan who was in the way of everything.

You can see the England coaching staff and players feel aggrieved, they feel that was a penalty. In this tournament that's a huge decision.

Before that moment it was probably a fair result. We've seen a defensive masterclass from both sides in the 18-yard box tonight.

Nikita Parris going down inside Canada's box in stoppage time is proving to be a big talking point.

Lovely scenes at the end where England's players have stayed out on the pitch to show their appreciation to the crowd. A little girl gasps in excitement as one of the Lionesses hands over her shirt as a souvenir.

On her outstanding goal: "It's something I want to add to my game. I just want to do my bit for the team."

On facing Spain on Sunday: "Our mentality for every game is the same. We're excited to play top teams."

England are on the attack and it requires a hurried kicked clearance by Canada's keeper to keep the Lionesses at bay.

Four additional minutes. No one inside the Riverside is leaving. It's been a cracker.

Emma Hayes has just given Millie Bright player of the match on TV. I'm not going to argue with that. Bright's goal was an absolute belter.

A job well done by Kadeisha Buchanan who has been incredible at the back for Canada. She looks shattered and no wonder. A tired challenge by her results in a yellow card.

"England, England," roar the crowd. They want to see a win. To be fair, the Lionesses are giving this a right good go. They're running themselves into the ground.

Demi Stokes and Keira Walsh combine to put Canada under more pressure before substitute Nikita Parris has an attempt blocked inside the box.
