England are pressing high at the moment. Sarina Wiegman said in her press conference this week there would also be moments they would drop off and allow Spain to have the ball.

That's not been the case in the opening few minutes though. Georgia Stanway and Jordan Nobbs have been particularly energetic.

  2. Postpublished at 4 mins

    England 0-0 Spain

Spain's record in 2021 was an incredible one. They played 12 matches, won all 12 and didn't even concede a goal.

Their wins included a 13-0 victory against Azerbaijan, 12-0 and 10-0 successes versus the Faroe Islands and an 8-0 thrashing of Scotland.

However, they did concede against Germany in a 1-1 draw last week.

  7. 'A step in our preparation for our Euros'published at 15:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

    England v Spain (15:15 GMT)

Here are some quotes from England boss Sarina Wiegman on today's match.

"We made a plan and have been thinking about this for a long time. We want to approach every game to win but we also know it's a step in preparation for our Euros.

"It's nice when you win and it gives a good energy but when you lose we shouldn't be in any urgency. It's a step on our journey to the Euros.

"[Spain] have developed very well. We know they have a lot of Barcelona players so are very technical,"

"They have done really well. We also think we have opportunities to harm them too.

"They are tight on the ball, comfortable on the ball and want the ball a lot. We talk about moments in possession and moments out of possession. We think they will have the ball but we will too."

  9. 'The best England team ever,' says Spain boss Vildapublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

    England v Spain (15:15 GMT)

Spain boss Jorge Vilda says he believes "this is the best England team ever" and Wiegman's side are "in contention" to win the Euros.

"They have a lot of youth, they play with courage," he said. "We're not particularly scared of anything. We know their strengths and that they have a lot of them. But we also know where their weaknesses are.

"We are motivated because we like to play in these venues, we like to play against great teams. It is England that is in contention for this summer's title."

  10. 'You want to play against the best'published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

    England v Spain (15:15 GMT)

England and Manchester City striker Ellen White said the players want to "test" themselves against top-level opposition like Spain.

"As a footballer you want to play against the best opponents so collectively as a squad we're really excited to face Spain," White said.

"They have a different style of play to what we've faced. They will want to possess the ball but we want it at the same time. It will be an interesting match-up."

Spain, like England, are one of the favourites to win Euro 2022, which will be held in England throughout the summer.

Spain have been drawn in Group B, along with Germany, Denmark and Finland.

  11. Why Barcelona and Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas is best in worldpublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

Alexia Putellas with the Ballon d'Or award she won for being the best female player in the world

If in doubt, pass to Alexia.

That was the motto of former Barcelona coach Lluis Cortes, whose all-conquering Catalan side won their first Women's Champions League title last season, along with a domestic Double.

His team was bursting with talent - the likes of Spain's all-time top scorer Jenni Hermoso, Norway winger Caroline Graham Hansen and Netherlands midfielder Lieke Martens - but it was Alexia Putellas who Cortes, and his players, would turn to in difficult moments.

Two years ago the Spanish attacking midfielder wasn't among football's glitterati. Despite being a constant presence for Barcelona and the national team over the past decade, it was her team-mates who got the global recognition.

That has all changed now. In recent months Putellas has landed a string of individual awards - the Ballon d'Or, Best Fifa Women's player, and Uefa Player of the Year, to name a few.

  12. A large Barcelona influencepublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

    England v Spain (15:15 GMT)

Ten of Spain's 23-woman squad play for European champions Barcelona with five of them - Maria Leon, Patri Guijarro, Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Jennifer Hermoso - all starting today.

They also include three players from Real Madrid in their XI, two from Atletico Madrid and Manchester United defender Ona Batlle.

  13. Greater test for Englandpublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2022

    England v Spain (15:15 GMT)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Carrow Road

England's first real test under Sarina Wiegman came on Wednesday in the 1-1 draw with Canada.

They looked decent in the first half - there was a clear identity to England's style of play.

They did trail off in the second half though, and this afternoon will be an even bigger test.

Barcelona's treble-winning side make up the bulk of the Spanish squad and will want to dominate possession. How England respond to that will be very interesting. They are used to having the ball!
