  1. 'Really pleased to win the game'published at 20:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Switzerland

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate tells Sky Sports: "Really good test, we know they are a very good side and a great challenge for us. We learned a lot about some new players and some inexperienced players in an international shirt."

On Conor Gallagher: "He is infectious. He can set the tone for the rest of the team, you see that with his club and he presses with ambition. He goes and makes contract and turns a lot of the ball over.

"To a degree, we are trying to work through the two games and manage the players. It has been a bizarre week with everything going on. We feel Mason Mount and Gallagher press well but can leave us vulnerable to the switch, the Swiss worked that out. We had an idea of what we wanted to do, we would have wanted Bukayo Saka to have a look at that.

"Everybody is always highlighting Jordan Pickford but you saw in the firs half the quality he has. He was composed with the ball today, he made good decisions and did not risk in silly areas. We played out form the back well, Ben White and Marc Guehi were very good. Ben got caught a bit for the goal but apart from that to come in at late notice with John Stones feeling something, he and Marc should be pleased."

On Stones injury: "We don't think it is too bad and could be ready for the next game. No point risking him in a game like this.

"We know the Swiss tactically are good and we got stronger as the game went on. The subs made an impact and we felt it was right to manage the game that way. Declan Rice was excellent and made a big impact. Really pleased to win the game."

  3. Set-up 'definitely suited me' - Gallagherpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Switzerland

    England

England midfielder Conor Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports after his second cap:

"It's a great feeling to play at Wembley in front of all the fans, I'm just really proud and it was good to get the win. A really proud moment.

"I was a little bit nervous but not too much. I was just excited to be honest, I was trying to take it all in and do the best I could.

"I was trying to do what I am best at - trying to press and win the ball back and trying to create chances. I felt like we could have done better in the first half but the game opened up in the second and I think overall it was a good performance.

"It was great to play alongside Hendo [Jordan Henderson] - he's obviously a great leader and he was talking to me the whole time and gave me that licence to go and push forward and make the box and press when I could. It definitely suited me.

On Palace teammates Marc Guehi and Tyrick Mitchell making debuts: "It was amazing for Marc and Ty to make their debuts and it's a credit to Crystal Palace and it's very well deserved.

"It was such a good decision for me to join Crystal Palace and it's just gone so well - I've had so many opportunities, playing in the Premier League the amount I have and being able to express myself and now being able to play for England."

    FT: England 2-1 Switzerland

    England

More from Luke Shaw to Sky Sports:

“It’s always important to feel like you’re wanted and I think especially here I always feel that. I’m not saying I don’t at United but here, the way things are, I feel wanted and I enjoy my football.

“And I think a big part of football is the enjoyment

“Of course it’s hard to enjoy when we’re losing and we’re not playing well at club level and we have to face that.

"This season it’s not been good enough at all so it’s hard to enjoy.

"We know we’ve got a lot to improve at the club but obviously right now we’re here with England so I’m focusing on that."

  6. 'The best feeling, a special feeling' - Shawpublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Switzerland

    England

England goalscorer Luke Shaw to Sky Sports:

"In this formation with a five, Gareth [Southgate] and [assistant] Steve [Holland] have talked a lot about the wing-backs not just creating chances but also scoring goals and I think that's vital.

"It's nice for me to add another one to the tally, I've not got many. It’s always nice to score here in front of your fans and hopefully there are more to come.

"It’s the best feeling, a special feeling, sometimes you can’t get your head around it - but, more importantly, tonight was about the performance, winning the game and keeping that momentum going.

"We mixed the team up, there were a lot of players who made your debuts and they should all be very proud of their performances because I think they were all excellent.

"The environment here that Gareth creates you always enjoy it – when I come here it’s about enjoyment and playing games with a smile on my face and enjoying it and I feel like when I come here I always do that."

  8. Kane 'super proud'published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    FT: England 2-1 Switzerland

    England

England skipper Harry Kane tells Sky Sports: "Tough game. A big year ahead and a chance for us to try different systems and formations to see how we get on. I felt it was a good performance but room for improvement but a good win to start the year.

"We rotated the squad, new faces getting debuts and these are the games you have to try stuff. There is not a lot of time between now and the World Cup.

"The new boys did great, really well. Marc Guehi got the penalty and good to see the young players coming on. You want to start your England career with a win and thankfully we did that."

On scoring 49th England goal: "You have to be ready for any chance at any moment. Penalties are a great way of getting on the scoresheet, I practice and work on them a lot. It is amazing company to be with, super proud to be doing that but we look forward to the next one. A big year ahead to get more caps and more goals. I will be ready for Tuesday but it is down to the manager."

You need to have enough players on the pitch with the core values instilled in this England side under Southgate. The balance of that was off in the first half; Stones being replaced by White may have tilted the balance. You saw the difference when Rice, Grealish and Sterling came on; it was innate.
