Meanwhile, former Middlesbrough midfielder Lee Cattermole has returned to the club where he made his name to take up the role of under-18s coach.

The 33-year-old, who announced his retirement as a player in August 2020 to concentrate on his coaching career, has been handed the task of guiding Boro's academy players through the system from which he graduated.

Cattermole made around 400 appearances as a professional for Middlesbrough, Wigan, Sunderland and Dutch side VVV Venlo.

  3. Derby supporters group approaches MP for helppublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch has been asked by a Derby supporters' group to act as an independent mediator to resolve a dispute threatening the club's future.

A potential takeover of the club, bringing them out of has been hindered by claims from Middlesbrough and Wycombe, while administrators at Derby have also been asked for funding plan by the EFL to show they are capable of completing their fixtures this season.

And the Rams Trust says it has approached Crouch - a Conservative MP and the chair of the fan-led review of football governance - "to bang the heads together" of the parties involved and break the deadlock.

Trust chair Jim Wheeler said, "we have been approaching MPs including Tracey Crouch herself to say: 'Would you be able to do this? Could you call them all together and just bang their heads together?'

"I noticed in the debate (in Parliament) the other day, she kind of distanced herself a little bit and said, 'well, that's not my daily role, you should be going to the Sports Minister', which is the other avenue that we could approach.

"I think there is a view though that actually having a woman in there might just sort of get a bit more sense from otherwise potentially very entrenched views from a group of guys around the table, especially when they're all multi-millionaires and all don't want to lose face."

  4. 'Let Broja play football'published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Southampton v Manchester City (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Southampton

Ralph Hasenhuttl was asked if the deal to sign Armando Broja permanently from Chelsea can be made before the end of the January transfer window:

"To be honest it doesn't affect me massively because I know that he is here until the end of the season.

"We have enough time to talk to them, about our future with him.

"Let this guy play football, let this guy do his job.

"I think it's very important for the young players to develop their game in a sort of calmness and not in this hectic rumours that are around. It doesn't help any young player and especially not him.

"This is what we try to do, we try to calm everything down because he should concentrate on his job, this is what he's here for."

  5. Fantasy football tips: Captaincy conundrum & dealing with Salah's absencepublished at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

    Alistair Bruce-BallImage source, BBC Sport

Let's start with the captaincy for gameweek 23, and with Mohamed Salah still absent for Liverpool it's far from a straightforward choice.

At the moment, it's still a single gameweek - though there has been some discussion within the fantasy football community that Aston Villa could potentially double up, either with a home game against Burnley or a trip to Leeds to add to their scheduled fixture at Everton.

As I've previously mentioned, @BenCrellin is the man to follow on Twitter to keep you up to date with all the news on that front, with this week's Fantasy Premier League deadline at 18:30 GMT on Friday.

If it happens, it would make Aston Villa, Leeds and Burnley players potential captaincy options for us, particularly with Leeds at home to Newcastle in their first game.

  6. 'We will need a very good performance'published at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Southampton v Manchester City (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Southampton

Southampton played some decent stuff in their 0-0 draw at the Etihad in September but they are coming up against a very different Manchester City.

Namely one brimming with confidence after winning 12 games on the spin and opening up a nine-point gap at the top of the Premier League.

So what does Ralph Hasenhuttl make of his sides chances against the reigning champions?

"We showed a good performance against them in the first game this season but the situation is a bit different now I think." he said.

"They have a week to prepare for this game, they have had no game during the week, they also have no game next week so they will definitely play with the best possible squad.

"I'm sure that Pep (Guardiola) will take this game very seriously although he has a big lead at the moment in the league with an amazing run of winning games. It shows how consistent and how good they are.

"We will again need a very good performance to get the chance to get something."

"At the moment we have 20 outfield players training."

Meanwhile, Fifa have said changes on the number of players that clubs can loan in or out will change.

From 1 July 2024 clubs will only be able to have a maximum of six players in on loan and six players out on loan at any one time.

However, in the meantime, there'll be a transition period of the next two seasons where those figures are eight and then seven players.

Players aged 21 and younger, who are designated as 'club-trained players' will be also exempt from these limitations.

Everton v Aston Villa (12:30 GMT)

    Everton

More from Everton caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson: "I feel very honoured the club turned to me again.

I have spoken to the owner and chairman and they have been very supportive. We are all willing for us to get a result on Saturday. It is a difficult time, results have been really poor, to be honest.

"I am sure they [the supporters] will be well, well up for it this weekend. We really need them to push us across the line for the whole game."

Reports have emerged suggested that Wayne Rooney - the former Everton forward currently managing Derby - and ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard are under consideration for the manager's job at Goodison Park.

And Ferguson says that his own role in charge will be for a short period. I'll only be in charge for the upcoming games" added the Scot.

"The club are in a process of going through their candidates. They will go through that process and I am sure they will get the best man for the job."

Duncan Ferguson's first stint as Everton's caretaker boss began with a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park and the 50-year-old Scot says he is confident in the abilities of the current crop of players to turn their poor run around.

"I have confidence in the players and the team and think they can win every game and that will be no different on Saturday," Ferguson added.

"We have a lot of great players in there and they will step up, I am sure."

Everton's players have been told to "run themselves into the ground" after hearing a few "home truths" says caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson.

The Scot took charge for his second spell as caretaker boss following the dismissal of Rafael Benitez last Sunday.

Benitez paid the price for a ninth defeat in 12 Premier League games, with the Blues now just six points above the relegation zone

"The players have always worked hard but I am pushing them as hard as I possibly can, then they will feel great coming off the training pitch, as we all do when we put in a good day's work," Ferguson told the club's tv channel.

"I am getting among the players and telling a few home truths because the past has not been good enough. But it is in the past. We move forwards, the game is coming and let's get ready for it. They [Everton players] should give everything.

"They should run themselves into the ground. They should roll up their sleeves and fight for the club in every single game. Imagine if you asked a fan to put a shirt on and get on the pitch, what would they do? Well they need to do that."

Watford v Norwich (Fri, 20:00 GMT)

    Watford

More from Claudio Ranieri on the Norwich game:

"Of course we have to win but we don't want to lose.

"This is a very important match for us and for them.

"It's a very good match for the Premier League.

"If we win, the clean sheet can wait. It's not important, now we need points. Also if we score one more goal than our opponents it's okay."

On the mood of the players in the Hornets camp:

"I see how they work in the training session. They are very focused in what we are doing.

"The quality is there of course. They train with heart, with passion, they want to create a good atmosphere between us and the crowd together.

"To push together and to give some good satisfaction to our fans."

"I'm okay, but of course I leave everything open to my club."

On reports Watford are set to sign Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu:

"It's not close 100 per cent. For this reason I said, if the club think he's good for us, or for now, for the future, we are ready to train with him."

    On Liverpool defender Nat Phillips:

"I like a lot, Phillips. Now we are very very full of defenders.

"Until the end of the market, everything could happen."

Leeds Utd v Newcastle (15:00 GMT)

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa says that forward Patrick Bamford has sustained a fresh injury, affecting his foot.

"But he is a player that is easy to remember for his goals, assists and good performances."

On Eddie Howe and the job he is doing at Newcastle:

"He has found a system and a group of players that play regularly and he has evened the team out.

"They have been close to all of their opponents in all the matches they have played. This is all positive about the job he is doing."

Leeds Utd v Newcastle (15:00 GMT)

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has been chatting to the media about his side's forthcoming match against struggling Newcastle.

"They have brought in players specific to certain positions," Biela said.

"A right back and a centre forward to replace the forward who usually plays in that position [have come in].

"It is difficult to interpret the opponents coach but I don't think they will alter how they play but those players will enrich [Newcastle's] the squad."
