Here are some of the key lines that have come out of the Arsenal camp in the build-up to Thursday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

    • He had a strong response to questions about the cancellation of the Tottenham fixture: “We didn’t have the players necessary to put a squad available to compete in a Premier League match – that is 100% guaranteed. We did the right thing and we will not let anyone damage the reputation of the club.”
    • On the role of academy players in his team: “We already have the youngest squad in the league. We want to play football and maintain the integrity of every competition and the highest standards. If we’ve got the players available that I suspect we have, then we will play tomorrow.”
    • Arteta also praised the Arsenal supporters. He described the atmosphere at the Emirates as “the best for many years”, adding: “We have an opportunity to get to a final and we are very excited to play the game. I thank the fans for really creating a bond with the team.”

This will be a Premier League match that will be talked about for years to come – thrilling and dramatic right up to the final second.

Leicester thought they had secured the three points when the impressive James Maddison, in front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate, scored in the 76th minute after linking up well with substitute Harvey Barnes.

But it was to be another replacement who would go on to grab the headlines.

Steven Bergwijn looked to have rescued a point for Spurs in the 95th minute, but then, amid incredible scenes of celebration and heartbreak at King Power Stadium, snatched a 97th-minute winner.

Tottenham remain unbeaten in the Premier League under Antonio Conte and jump above bitter rivals Arsenal into fifth position, while Leicester will be left wondering just how they let this one slip away.

But, for the neutral, this was football at its brilliant, captivating best.

Surely Manchester United should have tried to move Jesse Lingard on last summer.

He has probably collected more splinters from bench warming than starts this season and weren't West Ham and other clubs interested in buying him six or seven months ago?

  19. Man Utd reject Newcastle loan bid for Lingardpublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Manchester United have rejected Newcastle United's loan bid for England attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard.

Lingard, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is attracting interest from clubs as he struggles for game time under Ralf Rangnick.

Manchester United are reluctant to loan the 29-year-old as it would effectively end his Old Trafford career.

Deals with Tottenham and West Ham have been dismissed as United feel that would strengthen a top-four rival.

Newcastle, who are fighting relegation, are not in the same bracket but the Old Trafford club have nevertheless rejected their attempt to take him on loan.

The Tyneside club have the option of trying to sign Lingard permanently, although it is thought the player would prefer to wait until the summer before deciding his next club.
