Those were the day eh. When half of Europe's top-flight footballers had moustaches (well a good portion), you could pass back to your keeper (and they could pick the ball up) and players ran through brick walls and sometimes their opponents, to get the job done.

Those with long memories will also remember Steaua as once being the club of Dan Petrescu, Ilie Dumitrescu and the ‘Maradona of the Carpathians’, Gheorghe Hagi.

    What. A. Player.

  3. The Eastern European giant at war with itselfpublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Steaua celebrate winning the European CupImage source, Rex Features

Not then this is a fascinating piece about Steaua Bucharest...

The Eastern European giants are embroiled in a bitter dispute that shows little sign of easing. If anything, the temperature is on the rise.

Steaua were European Cup winners in 1986. Founded in 1947 as an army club in the early days of Romania's communist regime, for decades their fierce competition with Dinamo Bucharest dominated the country's football scene.

Now they have a bigger rivalry - one that sprung from within.

Today there are two teams that both lay claim to Steaua's European Cup final victory over Barcelona, their 21 league titles and record 20 Romanian Cup triumphs between 1947 and 2003.

That has been the case since 2017, a key year in this dramatic story. That season, a team playing in the top flight as Steaua Bucharest was finally compelled by legal action to abandon the name. They became FCSB, and were forced to give up their claim on Steaua's sparkling past. They still dispute the ruling.

In that same year, a Steaua Bucharest claiming authentic continuity with the great old club founded 75 years ago began a new life in Romania's fourth division.

  4. Dembele 'has to leave' Barcelonapublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

Barcelona chief executive Mateu Alemany Font has provided an update on Ousmane Dembele's future or lack of one at the Catalan club.

Unless the French international leaves the club it looks as though he is to be sent into exile until his deal runs out in the summer.

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague adds, external: "If the player wants to stay until the end of the season, he risks not to play until the next campaign.

But why would he want to go to help Barcelona with a transfer fee or to release wages given what he has just heard?

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast earlier this morning reflecting on that Spurs win at Leicester.

"It was a remarkable game, to be fair Tottenham played well, they missed lots of chances but at 2-1 down when you've got a minute left on the clock.

"The emotions that Brendan Rodgers and Antonio Conte must have gone through, to give that third goal away Brendan was very unhappy I'm sure, it was really sloppy play from Leicester and Tottenham punished them. An amazing finish to a game.

"A great night for Tottenham but a disastrous one for Leicester."

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey could return for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

Partey is an option because his Ghana side have been knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations - but Emile Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Martin Odegaard are all doubtful.

Liverpool will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the forward suffered an ankle injury against Brentford.

Midfielder Thiago Alcantara and striker Divock Origi are out until February.

With one win separating the bottom four it's looking pretty tight at the bottom of the Premier League.

You'd have thought that Leeds are just about of any immediate danger but a Norwich or Watford win on Friday evening will leave Everton looking anxiously at the clubs below them.

More from Norwich boss Dean Smith: "We all know how important this game is against Watford. It can do a lot for the team that wins it.

Norwich boss Dean Smith has kicked off with a bit of team news.

He says that goalkeeper Tim Krul is out of Friday's match at Vicarage Road with a shoulder injury but he is not yet sure on the timescale for his return.

"He went to see a consultant yesterday, so I am waiting for the feedback from our medical staff to give me some time on it," Smith said.

However, in some slightly more positive updates he adds “Billy [Gilmour], [Mathias] Normann, [Lukas] Rupp and [Andrew] Omobamidele should all be back for Wolves in the FA Cup.”

Life in the Premier League always looks better after a win and that is almost certainly likely to be the case at Norwich.

    Leicester 2-3 Tottenham

Tottenham defeated Leicester despite trailing after 94 minutes and 52 seconds.

That's basically the latest a team has been losing but gone on to win a match in the Premier League and overtakes Manchester City's 3-2 win over QPR in May 2012 (91:14) for that particular feat.

  14. They won the game on our mistakes - Rodgerspublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2022

    Leicester 2-3 Tottenham

Some Leicester reaction now from that remarkable game at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We had 93 minutes of really good work against a really good side, with top players at the top end of the field. We had to fight all the way through the game. We had moments of quality and resilience.

"We are disappointed to concede the equaliser. If we win a couple of duels the game is over. But we didn't. You then have to take your point. So to lose the game, it is all on us. We can have no complaints. We gift-wrapped three goals and presented them the three points.

"You have to see it through. We have a header that we have to win in a key area of the pitch. From that, everyone else is in covering positions. Doherty makes a great run and they get the equaliser. But you have to take your point and move on. We make the wrong choice and one pass and Bergwijn is in to finish it really well. We didn't deserve to lose it but we have to learn. They won the game on our mistakes.

"James [Justin] got a great reaction from the supporters which will give him confidence. You could see his energy and defending. It is brilliant to have him back. He is a very important player for us."
