Gareth Southgate says he understands Wilfried Zaha's decision to play for Ivory Coast.

The Crystal Palace striker won two caps for England - making his debut in November 2012 - before switching to the country of his birth in 2016.

Both England appearances came in friendlies.

"He's a talent. He's a good player playing at a high level every week.

"He felt the Ivory Coast was the route to go and I totally understood that. It's hard to say what his role might have been with us.

"Raheem [Sterling] has been a key part of our team for a long period, Jesse Lingard had done a fabulous job and, at the start, we had Adam Lallana, who was our player of the year for the first 18 months or so. "

England come into this match off the back of a 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland on Saturday.

Harry Kane scored to move level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 49 England goals as they came from behind.

Breel Embolo's header put Switzerland in front after 22 minutes but Fabian Frei's error ended with Luke Shaw equalising just before the break.

England, who gave debuts to Marc Guehi, Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell, completed the turnaround with 12 minutes left when Kane scored from the spot after VAR adjudged that Steven Zuber had handled from a corner.

Plenty of interest in the plotlines as England face Ivory Coast at Wembley in the second friendly in this international break but it is always intriguing to see Jude Bellingham get a start.

The Borussia Dortmund teenager has looked perfectly at home on the international stage and such is his quality that he is one of those who can progress to make a huge impact at the World Cup in Qatar.
