    Man Utd 0-1 Everton

It was a fantastic counter-attack by Everton. Emslie is unmarked, Man Utd have just left her on the right-hand side. But what a finish; it is the only place she could put it. Drilled into the far corner; Mary Earps had no chance.

    Wow, that's silenced the crowd!

First attack of the game and we have the first goal.

Kenza Dali plays the ball through to Claire Emslie down the right, but she had plenty to do.

Emslie outpaces Hannah Blundell before drilling an unnerving finish into the bottom corner, sliding off to celebrate in front of the Stretford End.

    What dreams are made of.

Marc Skinner wasn't around when Manchester United beat West Ham 2-0 in the Women's Super League at Old Trafford last season, so this is a new experience for the Red Devils boss as well.

No fans were present at the Theatre of Dreams to watch Casey Stoney's side win 12 months ago because of coronavirus. It's a totally different atmosphere this time.

"There is of course massive excitement for everyone, but I'm pretty good of being the killjoy!" writes Skinner, who was appointed last July, in his programme notes.

"If we take care of business, it'll be a wonderful event. But we must do that first."

United start this game third in the table. It's all about staying in a Champions League spot for Skinner and his players, with just four games left after today.

The top three in the WSL qualifying for next season's Champions League. United are unbeaten in three WSL matches since losing the derby away at Manchester City on 13 February.

Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has dreamed of walking out in front of fans at Old Trafford for years.

Growing up in Manchester, Zelem used to wave the Champions League banner in the centre-circle at Old Trafford when the men's team walked out on a European night.

"I remember I nearly hit someone. I was swinging it, giving it a good go and I think it might have been Denis Irwin," she recalls.

"I thought 'Oh my God, I've nearly knocked out a legend."

To come to a stadium with the history Old Trafford has is what every footballer dreams of. Whether you are female or male, this is what you want. I'm sure the girls on both sides will be excited; there will be nerves, but hopefully the good kind that get you ready for a game. Today is ultimately about three points.

Manchester United's women's team will play in front of fans at Old Trafford for the first time in the club's history today, and manager Marc Skinner says it will remind him of the "romanticism left in football".

They played at the men's stadium a year ago behind closed doors when they beat West Ham 2-0 in the Women's Super League.

But the game against Everton will be "special", said Skinner.

"It is a special stadium. It feels like it's got a wonderful history. You can feel it and absorb it," he added.

"It's exciting and it should be to play in this wonderful stadium in front of our home fans. Hopefully it spurs us on to extract every bit of energy from our players."

This is a huge day for regular watchers of Manchester United's women's team, who usually attract crowds of about 2,000 for games at their regular base 15 miles away from Old Trafford at Leigh Sports Village.

Jonathan Foster was up early this morning to make it in time for kick-off after travelling from Stourbridge in the West Midlands. He paid £39 for a United women's season ticket at the start of the season and has not missed a home match.

"It's really good what the club have done to raise awareness of the women's game by staging a game at Old Trafford," the 38-year-old told me earlier.

Ticket prices have been kept deliberately low at £6 and £3 to try and attract a big attendance. It looks to have paid off.

There were several thousand fans inside Old Trafford half-an-hour before kick-off - and the numbers are growing by the minute.

The lower tiers of all four sides of the ground are open to fans. The away end is also in use and there are several dozen Everton fans here already.

There has been a carnival atmosphere building outside Old Trafford all morning for this historic first Women's Super League game in front of fans at the famous venue.

The merchandise sellers were here three hours before kick-off to sell their half and half scarves, while the fast-food outlets a stone's throw from the ground were selling burgers and chips from 9.30.

Children in United shirts have been kicking footballs outside the megastore on what is another glorious spring day in Manchester.

United are hoping for a crowd of about 25,000 but one merchandise seller told me he had heard 30,000 could turn up because of the weather.

Two changes for Manchester United from the side that started the 1-1 draw away to West Ham on 16 March.

Norway defender Maria Thorisdottir returns along with Wales international Hayley Ladd.

The big surprise is that Republic of Ireland international Diane Caldwell is not involved at all.
