So that's it. League One's marathon campaign comes to an end and in the style of celeb fan Steve Cram, Sunderland are the side who pass the tape when it comes to the play-offs for promotion.

Hard luck to Wycombe, who will be back in League One next season, but deserve plenty of credit for playing their part this evening.

All the best to Adebayo Akinfenwa in retirement too. Some career he's enjoyed.

The play-offs don't stop here, of course.

Next week sees League Two and the Championship get a crack. Join us?

    Until then, take care.

    Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth:

"The best team won today. They’ve got good players that will do well in the Championship next season.

"We’re proud of what we’ve achieved this season and we’ll go again stronger next year. There’s no blame, only pride."

While tonight will be some party, wherever the Sunderland fans find themselves, for Alex Neil and company, thoughts will soon switch to next season.

Does he stick or twist? Teams cannot afford to stand still.

Alex Neil will be thinking what he can do with this club if he can recruit the type of players he needs to take them to the next level.

He's been there before, he knows what it takes.

  5. 'I'll think about next season when the hangover wears off'published at 17:25 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

    FT: Sunderland 2-0 Wycombe

Sunderland boss Alex Neil told Sky Sports:

"I thought we deserved to win, Wycombe did great this season, we knew people back us and we were favourites, but that's normal for us.

"We coped really well, and the lads deserve. This is the first step on getting back to where we want to be.

"I focus on the guys that matter who are the players and they got the job done.

"I'll start thinking about next season when my hangover wears off."

We have waited so long to see Sunderland win at Wembley. They deserved to win today.

The last 15-16 matches we have seen since Alex Neil took over, it's been an unbelievable turnaround.

Lee Johnson deserves a mention. Sunderland went into Christmas with a better than two points per game return.

I think he would have had a good go getting Sunderland over the line. The players started faltering and at the time he didn't have the players to replace them with.

The bad results before he got the sack, he didn't have anyone to play on the left side of defence.

  8. 'This club has been in this league too long'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

    FT: Sunderland 2-0 Wycombe

Sunderland playmaker and man of the match Alex Pritchard told Sky Sports:

"Everyone goes on about the size of the club, the club has been in this league for too long now.

"We've had ups and downs, a big thank you to Lee Johnson [former boss] - big credit to him, and Alex the gaffer has come in.

"The fans deserve it. They've been incredible.

"Before Alex came in we were leaking goals. But we've been solid. He's just made us more solid and we're always a threat."

John Kay's left foot: This is down to Alex Neil. He inherited a side that was too open and made them into a unit explicitly for the purpose of getting out of this league. He’s got it spot on almost every game and deserves massive credit.

Kris Jefferson: Even as a Newcastle fan, it’s great to see Sunderland back into the Championship, and hopefully soon back to the Premier League. A stronger Sunderland means a stronger North East football altogether, and the region desperately needs galvanising.

I fancied Sunderland in the play-offs because the pressure was off them. They weren't favourites in the betting to win them.

Sheffield Wednesday was a difficult game and if they weren't going to win it, it was going to be MK Dons.

  12. Postpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

Sunderland defender Bailey Wright told BBC Radio Newcastle: "We have done our talking on the pitch. Wycombe gave us a great game but we deserved it.

"To a man everyone at the club deserves this day and we're going to enjoy the moment.

"We knew that if we were at our best we could beat anyone. We knew what Wycombe could do but we knew we had the quality to hurt them.

"I've been through some difficult times at this club so we're going to soak this up and enjoy it."

Alex Neil was emotionless before the game, but now he looks on like a proud father with a beaming smile on his face, as his team takes it in turns to lift that big silver pot on the Royal Box.

Sunderland's gaffer has done a remarkable job.

  14. 'To win in front of the fans is unreal'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

Sunderland goal hero Elliot Embleton told Sky Sports:

"I've been here since I was seven and to win in front of 46,000 Sunderland fans is unreal, I can't believe it.

"We're a massive club, look at all the fans."

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart told Sky Sports:

"It's an unbelievable feeling, for it to end like this in the play-offs, you couldn't have picked a better way to do it,

"We're a confident group, and we had to treat it right, we were excellent today and got what we deserved.

"It was a massive opener, Wycombe defend really well and the goal settled us down. Getting the second got us home.

"Today was the icing on the cake in a game with so much importance."

The Sunderland fans, who were accustomed to trips to Old Trafford, Anfield and the Emirates, have had to temper their expectations over the past four years.

It was visits to Accrington, to Cheltenham and to Oxford that have replaced those glory days but they have stuck with it.

Today's 46,000 crowd just shows how loyal they have been.

What Alex Neil has done since he came into the club deserves a lot of credit.

He identified there were too many young players in the team and wanted more experience.

The way he goes about each game, he looks at each game and looks at weaknesses and strengths. He looks at the whole picture.

There have been so many disappointments in the play-offs for Sunderland, but Alex Neil has got it so right since arriving.

He's banished all the negativity, made the team tough to beat.

And, in Ross Stewart, a 26-goal striker has powered them into the Championship.
