  1. Red Star beat Rangers on way to greatest triumphpublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

Rangers v Red Star Belgrade (20:00)

Tonight's visitors have a rich European history, with their crowning moment on the continent coming in 1991 when they lifted the top prize, beating Marseille on penalties to lift the European Cup.

After seeing off Grasshopper Zurich in the first round, Red Star swept Rangers away 4-1 on aggregate, with star men Robert Prosinecki and Darko Pancev on target in a 3-0 first leg victory in Belgrade.

In the quarter-finals, they eased past Dynamo Dresden and then did for Bayern Munich in the last four, scoring goals aplenty.

Marseille were also a thrilling side, with Chris Waddle and Jean-Pierre Papin in attack, but the goalless final was utterly dire. Red Star held their nerve though, sticking away all five spot-kicks.

Perhaps Dortmund did switch off, perhaps they underestimated Rangers. I don't think you'll get that from Red Star tonight. They'll come to Ibrox looking to prove a point. I think Rangers are confident in Europe and rightly so.

  3. 'Rangers strong at the back'published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

    Richard Foster
Former Rangers defender on BBC Sportsound

Rangers need the natural central defender in Balogun. It's a real strong left-hand side of defence for Rangers. It's as strong as their back four can be.

  4. Third time lucky for Rangers?published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

Rangers v Red Star Belgrade (20:00)

Red Star defender Aleksandar Dragovic was in the Bayer Leverkusen side that knocked Rangers out at this stage in 2020.

Last season, their run was ended by Slavia Prague.

Red Star will be a tough nut to crack but confidence must be high in the home dressing room after eclipsing Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund 6-4 on aggregate to get here.

  5. Red Star are no rookiespublished at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

Rangers v Red Star Belgrade (20:00)

This is the first time Serbia has a club in the last 16 of the Europa League, but that doesn't mean tonight's opponents are short of European experience. Far from it.

Red Star were knocked out by AC Milan on away on goals in the round of 32 last season.

In the previous two campaigns they were in with the big boys, finishing fourth each time in the Champions League group phase.

  6. Serbs stick with Russian sponsorpublished at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2022

Rangers v Red Star Belgrade (20:00)

Russian energy giants Gazprom sponsor tonight's visitors and the name remains emblazoned on their kit.

Amid a raft of sanctions on Russia, Uefa has ditched a lucrative deal with Gazprom, while German club Schalke have dropped their arrangement.

Rangers are the last Scottish club left standing in Europe.

Celtic completed the set, falling from the Champions League to the Europa League then into the Conference League, where they lost heavily to Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt.

An impressive play-off victory over Borussia Dortmund leaves Rangers in the last 16 of the Europa League for the third year running, with Red Star Belgrade in Glasgow for the first leg.
