The fans are starting to filter into the stadium with kick-off approaching.

Chelsea had been allocated 4,500 away tickets for this game but most of those had to be returned after sanctions were imposed on Roman Abramovich.

Despite that, there will be around 700 Blues supporters in the away end. A small following, but they'll no doubt do all they can to make plenty of noise.

  3. Chelsea's pre-match shenaniganspublished at 16:32 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2022

    Middlesbrough v Chelsea (17:15 GMT)

Chelsea asked for this game to be played behind closed doors because their fans can no longer buy tickets under the licence issued to allow them to keep playing following sanctions against Roman Abramovich.

They withdrew the request after a few hours - following a lot of ridicule from fans and anger from Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, the government increased its spending cap for Chelsea away travel to allow them to fly to this game.

They were facing a 10-hour coach trip otherwise.

They are very much in the play-off picture in the Championship.

Middlesbrough are in good form at the moment and name an unchanged side from the one that beat Birmingham in the Championship last-time out.

Josh Coburn, who scored the winner against Tottenham in the last round, is on the bench.

Middlesbrough XI: Lumley; Dijksteel, McNair, Fry; Jones, Taverneir, Howson, Crooks, Taylor; Balogun, Connolly.

Subs: Daniels, Hall, Olusanya, Peltier, Watmore, Bamba, Bola, Coburn, Boyd-Munce.

It has been a short turnaround since Chelsea's Champions League game in Lille, so boss Thomas Tuchel makes five changes.

Romelu Lukaku and Mason Mount start, while Malang Sarr, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hakim Ziyech also come in.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Sarr, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Mount, Ziyech, Lukaku, Pulisic.

Subs: Bettinelli, Alonso, Kenedy, Chalobah, Kante, Barkley, Havertz, Vale, Werner

The mood is positive. There was a lot of noise and nonsense [when Chelsea requested the game be played behind closed doors] on Tuesday, but I'm delighted it didn't distract anybody. We managed to come through a big Championship game.

It is difficult [to shut noise out] nowadays. Modern players see and hear everything through the phones they are continually on. Maybe it was different in days gone by, but they knew Tuesday night [against Birmingham] was important. What a reward for three fabulous results. We don't forget how we scraped through at Mansfield in the third round to set up a tie at Old Trafford, then obviously Spurs and now Chelsea.

A glorious, sunny day in the North East as Middlesbrough look to add another Premier League scalp to their collection this season.

The Championship play-off hopefuls have seen off Tottenham and Manchester United in the FA Cup so far and will be feeling confident of creating another upset against a side somewhat in turmoil.

Having said that, Chelsea don't appear to have let off-field uncertainty about the club's future following sanctions against Roman Abramovich affect them, with wins against Newcastle and Lille in the past seven days and they will be determined to maintain that momentum.

It should set things up for a quarter-final cracker.

    FA Cup

The build-up to this game was dominated by restrictions on Chelsea and their ownership status.

They failed in their bid to get the game played behind closed doors and were worried they were going to have to get a coach to the game like normal people.

But home fans are allowed in and Chelsea were able to fly as they wanted - so it's time for the football now.

Welcome to build-up of the first FA Cup quarter-final between Championship side Middlesbrough and Chelsea.
