Few would have predicted Phil Jones lining up in the Manchester United defence tonight.

The former England international will start only his second Premier League game since January 2020 and his first since playing 90 minutes against Wolves on 3 January this year.

Jones admitted before that game he had "been through hell and back over the last couple of years" after struggling with injury and lockdown.

The 30-year-old missed last season with a knee issue and, before his return against Wolves, last played for United's first team in January 2020 in the FA Cup third round.

Although Jones impressed against Wolves, he has only played about half an hour since then.

He came on as a 90th-minute substitute and played extra-time in United's penalty shootout defeat by Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on 4 February.

Mark Burt: If this rampant and ruthless Liverpool don’t bang in at least 6 tonight they’ll be disappointed. This overpriced Man U team are amongst the most gutless and timid sides I’ve ever seen.

Michael Devlin: Worst United lineup I can remember. Incoherent and imbalanced. The team has fallen such a long way since the start of this season. Dreadful.

  4. Can they actually do it?published at 19:18 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

Liverpool v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

So, they already have one domestic trophy in the bag, they are 270 successful minutes away from what would be a seventh European crown and have another trip to Wembley lined up in the FA Cup final. On top of that, they're just one point off top in the Premier League and will spend this evening at the summit if they avoid defeat.

This Liverpool quadruple is actually a genuine possibility, isn't it?

It always seem like one of those unattainable pipe dreams that we in the media drum up around February only for a side to then slowly fade to just the one or two trophies (must be awful!).

Now don't get me wrong, Liverpool still have an awful lot to do, but with less then two months of the season left, the Reds may be as close as any side has yet got to the fabled four.

A win tonight is crucial, you feel.

If Man City go four points clear in the next two days, that could be that for the league.

Manchester United have to come here and recognise Liverpool are a better side.

They will have to be at their absolute best in terms of their work rate, their willingness to run, to sacrifice the ball at times, to be hard to beat.

United have to make sure they're on it tonight or else it could be a really long night for them.

Quite often, managers claim they won't be watching their closest rivals in action. "We'll focus on ourselves," being the usual cry.

However, Man City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted he will be settling in at home to watch this game tonight, hoping United can do his side a favour...

"We watch the game, I will be at home, have time tomorrow to focus," he said. "I would love Man United to take points but we have to do our job next game and then the next one. I will watch as a fan and see if I can learn something about both teams."

Manchester United have confirmed there will be a fan-led minute’s applause in the seventh-minute of tonight’s game at Liverpool.

The mark of recognition follows the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo’s new-born baby boy and is a gesture planned by fans of both clubs.

Both teams will also wear black armbands.

"Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time.

"As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we underline the family's request for privacy.

"Cristiano, we are all thinking of you and sending strength to the family."
