  1. Thank you and goodnightpublished at 23:20 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Another fine evening for Liverpool.

Another chastening one for Manchester United.

Tomorrow, Manchester City get their chance to hit back in the title race and Arsenal have an opportunity to show they're still very much in the hunt for that top-four spot. And those are just two of the plotlines to pick up.

We'll be here to bring you the best of it all.

  2. 'We are not good enough to get points against Liverpool'published at 23:18 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, speaking to Sky Sports: "Especially in the first half we were just not up to it.

"We decided for an added central defender because we lacked natural ball winners and they were not available but the first goal was not part of the game plan to be so high up.

"We had all the players at the halfway line and they were at their very best on the counter attack. Our left side was completely open and they had an easy tap in five seconds after playing forward from the back.

We were second best all the over in the first half. The second half was better but played a ball we didn't want to play and they scored the third. They showed what type of calibre they are and we are not good enough to get points against Liverpool.

"They are one of the best, if not the best, team in the world and we are far from that. We are not physical or athletic enough. If we want to have a chance we have to cause problems and use our counter attacking moment and we didn't."

Did the players lack heart and desire? "I'm pretty sure all the players in the starting XI knew the importance of that game. In order to get something out of a game you have to be on them - in the first half we didn't do that. In second half we did for 25 minutes but it wasn't enough."

  3. 'We showed speed and desire'published at 23:14 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "I did enjoy tonight, indeed. I don't expect us to be for 95 minutes completely in charge of the game, but for 70 minutes we were in charge and for 20 minutes, while United weren't in charge but they caused us problems.

"The first half we were really in charge of the game but then it is a 15-minute break and then we needed another 15 minutes to be ourselves.

"Our counter press was second to none, the speed and the desire the boys showed tonight. It was a really good game and we scored wonderful goals. Everyone is happy tonight."

On Thiago Alcantara's performance: "It was quite good! He's a world class player there is no doubt, when he feels the game and has rhythm he can be dangerous with and without the ball. That is the best he showed tonight."

On what it means to Liverpool fans to beat Manchester United 9-0 on aggregate this season: "All fans are smart and know it does not happen often. United are not in a good moment, but for our fans it was a big one and they deserve every bit of joy. Tonight they received a lot of joy."

On the applause and show of support for Cristiano Ronaldo: "It was a show of class and our thoughts are with Cristiano and his family. I can't imagine how it would be and we feel for him."

  4. 'An all-time low for Man Utd'published at 23:13 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

Former Manchester Unied captian Gary Neville on Sky Sports: “It was a sobering evening. Not one Manchester United fan expected to get anything tonight. It is predictable but I can’t explain how it’s gone from being promising at the end of last season when United finished second to where we are today, which is an all-time low. I’ve never seen it as bad as that. When I played Liverpool weren’t that great but they never made it that easy for us. I’ve never seen a United team wilt or be as flaky as they were in this game.

"Those players have proved they are decent and have played at a decent level but they're broken, they're done, they're finished."

  5. Postpublished at 23:10 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

Since 2003-04, there have been four instances of a player completing 100+ passes in a Premier League match against Manchester United. All four of them have been this season, with two of them being tonight (Thiago 105, Virgil Van Dijk 106).

  6. 'Top football'published at 23:05 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC MOTD: "They changed a bit second half and pressed a bit differently. We didn't find direction to pass the ball in and around the six-yard box and they end up with a corner. But what this team does really well is adapt to changes. To learn on the pitch. From time to time it takes a little longer. The rest of the game was just nice to watch. Top football. The desire we showed from the first second. The first goal was pure determination. Two players getting in behind and first touch. Luis was alone in front of the goal. An outstanding goal. Second goal, a wonderful goal. The play between Sadio and Mo. Could have scored more. A good night for all with a Liverpool heart."

On Thiago: "He is a good player. We have to keep him fit. He has good rhythm, which helps. He is in the right spaces, the little turns and passes. We don't have five million players like this on the planet. Only a few see things earlier than everyone else and also have the technical ability to get the ball there as well. A top game from him. Everybody was outstanding and that is what you need to win against Man Utd."

On scoring nine in a season against Man Utd: "It doesn't happen often, and I don't think it will happen often. It is not a normal situation. They are not in a good moment and on top have a lot of injuries. When Pogba left the pitch they played without their usual midfield. The pitch can become really big with a lot of offensive players on it. Centre midfield with Matic and Fernandes is not how you want to play. Nothing against the players, it is just not their natural game. We had 70-75% of the ball and they have to defend and that is not easy. I feel a bit for them."

Sho: Hannibal showed more fight than all the other players put together. This club is at its lowest point for sure. There's not much you can really say to describe that performance that hasn't already been said this season.

  10. 'We're playing cup finals every week'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Getting the first goal in these games always help. It was a really enjoyable night. Not many teams would have been able to live with us with the way we played.

"When we lost the ball our reaction was incredible. We put really good players under pressure. We pressed all over the park and we didn't let them have time on the ball. Off the ball we were exceptional."

On Mohamed Salah's goals: "When he doesn't score in one game it's classed as a drought. I think the goals were important for him. When goalscorers don't score they're disappointed and that will do him a world of good. Hopefully it gives him a good run of form for the rest of the season.

"If you can't have fun at this period of the season with what we're doing then you're in the wrong profession. We're fighting for all trophies, trying to play cup finals every single week it feels like. We all play with a small on our face but we're determined inside. You have to enjoy games like tonight - if none of us are smiling after this we have a bigger problem."

On going top: "For 24 hours at least. Manchester City are an incredible team and they're not exactly in bad form themselves. We fully expect them to bounce back. We have to keep doing what we're doing and keep winning games."

  11. 'Liverpool six years ahead of us'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick, speaking to BBC MOTD: "I don't think a different formation at the start would have changed anything. The first goal we conceded, it was not part of the game plan to be that high up and concede a counter-attack after five minutes. That changed the game. The first half, we were just not good enough. We did not win any first ball or second balls. We were second best in all relevant areas. Second half we changed a centre-back with Jadon Sancho. The first 25 minutes we were better and had pressure on the ball at times. Had two or three moments, but the third goal killed the game off.

"For the third goal it came from a ball we should not play. A pressing invitation - 12 yards into Anthony Elanga, who is a player for behind their back line. It is inviting them for those moments and six seconds later the ball was in our net.

"It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating. We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now. When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows."

  12. 'Rashford played like a child'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

More from Roy Keane, speaking on Sky Sports: "Marcus Rashford played like a child up front. Harry Maguire - the last goal - his passing and defending was unacceptable, not good enough for Manchester United.

"So we have to use that word again - rebuild. United are sixth in the league - unbelievable.

"What the club have always had in my experience was brilliant characters, people who would give everything they had for the club. But this team has no soul. Even in their words afterwards, it's very robotic and there's no emotion."And more from Graeme Souness: "No-one holds a mirror up to themselves and asks why they've not been good enough. Right now that group have taken Manchester United to where they are. They should not be struggling with a group of players like that - it's just not acceptable."

  14. 'Where do you start with that lot?'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness: "This is the biggest game in English football and Liverpool were sensational.

"But Manchester United were not very good so they didn't have a lot to play against. No energy, no aggression in that midfield. Show a bit of fire, make it difficult - but they didn't.

"For the past decade United have made poor footballing decisions but the exact opposite to that is Liverpool, who seem to have done everything right in terms of who they keep, getting rid of players at the right time. For 10 years United have consistently got it wrong when it comes to who they sign and who they keep. Good luck to the new manager - where do you start with that lot?"

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane: "There's no surprise at the result. Over the two games this season it's 9-0 to Liverpool. United are so far off it - the opposite of what you want in a top team. There is no leadership, no characters, no fight, no determination. It's a long way back for this club. Whatever we had when I played - that bit of pride - has gone."

Man Utd players walking around the pitch for most of the game. Liverpool players still sprinting to the ball when 4-0 up. That says everything you need to know about each side.

  16. 'The fans deserve more from us'published at 22:24 British Summer Time 19 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd midfielder Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports: "The fans don't deserve us to play this way. They deserve more from us. The way they stay and applaud us, they deserve more. We have to raise our level higher. It is what it is.

"I think everyone runs. I think there is effort from everyone. I don't think someone does not give 100%. We have to do it for ourselves, the clubs, the fans and everyone.

"We have to say things but that is kept in the dressing room. Now it is over we have to think of the next game.

"Liverpool is ready for the title. We are not. I don't need to be here saying about the difference of the level. We have to look at ourselves, from top to bottom and understand what is going wrong. We are competing until the end. Nobody can put down and think it is over. We have something to fight for."

Liverpool looked like they had levels they could go up. Manchester United were poor, but they're a team contending for top four.

Liverpool showed at the weekend [against Manchester City] that they can do that to anyone. It is ominous for the other teams. They could have had more goals.

It's quite incredible really how far this Man Utd team have fallen in such a short space of time. They were the second best team last year. Maybe Solskjaer wasn't as bad as people said. Even when we played badly we got results against the big teams, unlike under Rangnick. Credit this Liverpool squad though, they are very very good. We needed a CR7 hat trick to beat bottom of the league and the top team have just exposed every one of our weaknesses. I say exposed... Everyone already knew about them... I now know how all my Liverpool mates felt through the 90s and 00s.

The front three were absolutely sensational. They all know where the others are. It is frightening to watch when they go forward. It's so fluent. Some of the goals they scored tonight were sensational.
