  5. 'The fans would miss the derby most'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Liverpool goalscorer Andy Robertson was asked by BBC Sport if he'd miss the derby if Everton were relegated.

"The derby is a big game. For fans especially they always look to see when the derbies are," he said.

"The fans would miss it most. I'm a big believer that in a 38-game season you get what you deserve. Let’s see.

"They’re in a dogfight. Burnley won today. They’re fighting.

"Everton need to win games to stay up. If they do we'll look forward to more derbies and if they don’t they'll have to deal with it more than us and I’m sure they’ll bounce back."

  6. 'I want Everton to survive - but it'll be difficult'published at 19:08 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness on Sky Sports: "It was the easiest way to play football for Everton. They didn't ask the players to step up and play football, everyone was back in their own half. The only threat they had was Anthony Gordon in a race with Trent Alexander-Arnold down the left. I'm not pooh-poohing their attitude - I'd just say it's not that they played well. It was just about sitting in and trying to nick it. Can they do that every week? I'm not sure.

"I want Everton to survive. I lived in the city for a long time. They are a big proud football club with a fantastic history. It's going to be difficult for them though. They can't play like this in the last six games. They've got to go out and get some points."

  7. Postpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Liverpool recorded a possession figure of 82.7% today.

Only Manchester City (83% vs Swansea in April 2018) have recorded a higher such figure in a Premier League game since Opta started collecting this data (2003-04).

  8. 'The players stepped up'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports: "A football game has two halves; thank god. In the first half, we didn't pass quick enough, accelerate at the right moments, pass in behind. We had lots of things to improve on and we did; it is really difficult to deal with over 80% possession and the counter-attacking threat of the opponent. I'm really happy because it isn't about flying every week, it is about getting results. We had to work hard for it, but all good.

"At half-time, I told the players it was easy to improve. We didn't really show up, so they stepped up."

On Divovk Origi: "We will never miss a player like him because if he leaves, he will explode wherever he goes. He is a world-class striker, he is a legend and will stay a legend forever. He doesn't always make the squad which is ridiculous, but he is there when we need him every time. He was involved in both games; everything that we did in the second half, without Divock, wouldn't have happened. The group lives because of the boys that don't always play, they are the strongest players ever; [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, [Harvey] Elliot, [Takumi] Minamino, even Rhys Williams. They are in great shape, but the way they behave is why we do these kind of things."

On momentum: "There are not a lot of points we can drop, the next one is always waiting around the corner. That is the situation we are in. We have eight games to play, and if it goes well we can fit in a ninth, but you have to win games when you aren't at our best."

  10. 'We have to take that spirit forward'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard to BBC Sport: "The result is [disappointing] but the performance isn't. I'm very pleased and proud of the work ethic. We didn't get the clinical finishes at 0-0. If we take one of those chances, counter-attacking behind their line... I can't ask for any more of the players.

"We really needed to take advantage of the big period of the game where we were spot on."

On Anthony Gordon's penalty appeals: "I think they both could have been penalties but you often don't get them at Anfield. The fact there's contact and he gets booked is crazy. The second one was a foul [anywhere else] on the pitch. Sometimes you don't get them here.

"They're in a different area to us. They're near the top of the table, they've been together a long time and have a strong style of play. We had to be organised and discplined. I couldn't ask for more at half-time except taking our chances.

"I'm proud and happy with the performance. We have to take that spirit forward to the final games,.

"We'll give everything until the end."

  11. 'The players need to look at themselves'published at 18:54 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports: "The Everton players have been cheating their manager and their fans this season. To put in a performance as good as that against one of the best teams in the world at the moment and at one of the hardest places to play football? They made it so difficult for Liverpool and had real fight today. They need to look at themselves because now they're in the bottom three and they have to start fighting for their lives."

Ex-Everton striker Kevin Campbell: "What's happened at Everton is nothing short of disgraceful. A lot of money has been spent on the squad and you expect them to be higher up the league. For a club like Everton not to win away from home since August is ridiculous."

  12. 'We were smart for 60 minutes'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we played well. The gameplan was understanding they are one of the best teams in the world, with what they are doing to other teams. We wanted to be disciplined and to create chances. We had a couple of opportunities; the first half was good and we started the second half well. If we get the first goal, the game feels different."

On the Gordon penalty appeal: "I think it was. I've not seen how clear-cut it was."

On his tactics: "We are not in a position to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool. We were smart for 60 minutes and then it becomes very difficult after that."

On the relegation battle after slipping into the bottom three: "[Our league position] will be talked about, but we had to assume Burnley would win today. Leeds are still in it, they play tomorrow [against Crystal Palace]."

  13. 'Thank God game has two halves'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "Thank God the game has two halves. We didn't play particularly well in the first half. They made it uncomfortable but we didn't get in behind the last line. We didn't have enough movement.

"We weren't quick enough. We passed the ball into the area they had nine players. Second half we were much more direct and caused them much more problems. The goals were wonderful.

"We expected it [Everton's tactics] but we didn't react well. It's difficult. Each ball Jordan Pickford has he takes five minutes so we couldn't gain rhythm which you need to break down a low block. We expected them to do it.

"The amount of wins we've had in recent months is insane. You have to work. The boys did that again. I'm really happy.

"We stayed really cool and calm. The changes helped, Fresh players, different formation. It made it difficult for the opposition.

"We won 2-0, it's absolutely fine."

On Anthony Gordon's penalty shouts: "It [the second] was clearly no penalty. He's really good but he's lucky not to get a second yellow. The first was not a penalty and the second wasn't.

"If anybody thinks we fly through these games, I can apologise, it won't happen. If we can create atmospheres like today it's difficult to deal with us for 95 minutes.

"Everton did what they had to do. We deserved the three points.

"With a performance like this I think they can get the points they need."

  16. 'It is an amazing feeling'published at 18:37 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Andy Robertson speaking to Sky Sports: "It was tough, we started playing their game and not our own game. We weren't at our best. We had to focus on ourselves and be patient and create chances.

"Everton are fighting for every point they can get. We didn't create anything first half. We had to be patient and fortunately we got the goals. My first at the Kop end, it was an amazing feeling, I'm really pleased with all our contributions today and now we've got a tough week ahead."

Divock Origi on scoring six goals in 10 Merseyside derbies: "It is a nice record. I just think about playing football, but it was a tough game and we needed it."

  18. 'Good performance for lot of the game'published at 18:33 British Summer Time 24 April 2022

    Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton's Anthony Gordon to Sky Sports: "We can't fault our efforts. It's a tough place to come.

"[The plan was] just to make it difficult for them. They're in really good form. Throw them off a bit and hopefully take our chances but unfortunately they scored two goals.

"I had a couple where I could have done better. I'll work on it and become better.

"We stuck in. We stuck together. It was a good performance for a lot of the game but they showed their quality in the end."

On his booking for diving: "I don't think it's a booking. I felt contact so I went down. I can see why he didn't give a penalty but it wasn't a yellow card for me."
