    Bristol City 1-0 Sheffield United

Almost a second for Bristol City on the counter attack.

Chris Martin finds Andreas Weimann, who plays it into Antoine Semenyo. His shot is only just missing the top corner.

Then another dangerous move from the home side and Martin's shot is held by Wes Foderingham.

  2. Celebrations in London, Lancashire and Teessidepublished at 56 mins

    Bristol City 1-0 Sheffield United

As well as on the terraces at Ashton Gate, that goal by Chris Martin will have been enjoyed by fans of Millwall, QPR, Blackburn and Middlesbrough.

If the Blades lose this, those clubs will all remain right in the play-off picture.

    Would you believe it?

Sheffield United have a chance at one end as Jack Robinson's header is straight at Dan Bentley and seconds later, they fall behind.

The Robins launch it long where it is two on two and Antoine Semenyo picks Chris Basham's pocket out wide and squares for Chris Martin to put his team in front.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 48 mins

Jay Dasilva hobbles off with a foot injury and Ayman Benarous comes on for Bristol City.

  5. Worse than Derbypublished at 48 mins

    Bristol City 0-0 Sheffield United

I don't want to rub salt into the wounds of Derby fans, but Bristol City are one of the teams to have accrued fewer points on the field this season than the Rams.

The Robins, led by former Derby boss Nigel Pearson, have picked up 48 points on the pitch. Derby have managed 52.

Terry: Despite being relegated a lot of credit must go to Wayne as he could have walked at any point of the season, but he stayed on at Derby to try rescue them, fair play for that Wayne as for Derby fans I hope you bounce straight back next season.

Jack Lovatt: A year later than it should have been, but at least the relegation is now sorted.

  8. 'Derby fans should be proud of team'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 18 April 2022

Derby County relegated to League One

    Ed Dawes
BBC Radio Derby's Derby County commentator

"It doesn't feel good, but if you listen to what Tom Lawrence and Wayne Rooney had to say at the end of that game, the fans should feel proud of them.

"The effort, energy, creativity, fighting for the cause, camaraderie. It's all been there in recent months.

"Those relationships have meant this team have taken it to game 43 with a 21-point deduction and that has to be commended.

"The amount of players that have been introduced and brought through, that's a good starting block for next season.

"If they can get one or two senior players to sign new contracts and play for Wayne Rooney next season, even in League One, then Derby have a fighting chance.

"Minus 15 points is a very strong possibility next season, but that's from the off and not in late September.

"Derby fans should be very proud of their team and I'm sure they are."

  9. More to comepublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 18 April 2022

    Bristol City 0-0 Sheffield United

Don't forget this is not the end of the live action today.

At 8pm, Nottingham Forest take on West Brom at the City Ground in another match with big play-off implications.

Fans of both of those clubs will be watching this with interest. If Sheffield United fail to win, they will stay below Forest, while West Brom could move to within three points with a victory.

This really is a bonanza day of Easter football in the EFL.

More from Wayne Rooney speaking to BBC Radio Derby earlier, who did not hold back in his criticism towards former owner Mel Morris:

"We've earned enough points to stay in this division next season and developed some really good, young, local players.

"In that sense, the future of the club looks bright. But we need to get over what's happened.

"Where the club's been left, it was a complete mess. I know Mel Morris is a big Derby fan, so I'm sure he's sat at home tonight disappointed.

"We are as we've done everything we can to try and not let this happen and worked extremely hard.

"So hopefully he doesn't have a good night's sleep tonight and that plays on his mind, because I think he needs to have a think about it."

Sheffield United have been by far the better team but have no goal to show for it.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom will be pleased with most of what his team have done, apart from one thing.

We wondered pre-match where the goals would come from and 45 minutes later, we are still wondering.

    Another chance for the visitors.

A super slide-rule pass from John Fleck finds Enda Stevens, but the Irishman flashes it beyond the far post from a tight angle in the inside left position.

Oh, Iliman N'Diaye has to score this!

Some excellent passing ends with Enda Stevens' lovely touch into N'Diaye's path in the box.

He takes a touch and with the goal at his mercy, he goes for power and blazes over Dan Bentley's goal.

The Blades won't have too many better opportunities than that.

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 41 mins

A second booking and a second for Sheffield United.

Captain John Egan goes into the referee's book for a foul on Antoine Semenyo. Again, no real questions about that.

Lots of nice build-up play from Sheffield United, but they can't quite find the touch or final ball in the key areas to unlock the Bristol City defence.

But as we occasionally see from Manchester City in the Premier League, if you don't have a proper centre forward, finding the net can become tricky for even the very best.

  16. Rooney: "We had to gamble"published at 18:07 British Summer Time 18 April 2022

Derby County relegated to League One

    DerbyImage source, PA Media

More from Derby County manager Wayne Rooney speaking to BBC Radio Derby:

"I thought we were the better team throughout the game.

"First half, I felt we had to be a bit braver and push them higher up the pitch both in and out of possession.

"Second half, we kept knocking on the door and creating chances. We just couldn't get the ball over the line and then we had to gamble.

"We knew we'd leave ourselves a bit exposed, but that was a gamble we had to take to try and win the game.

"It's a sad day and we're picking up the pieces of what was left behind."

  17. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Bristol City 0-0 Sheffield United

Sheffield United are dominating possession but the lack of a centre forward is glaring.

Morgan Gibbs-White puts over a devilish low ball across the six-yard line, but shows his frustration as nobody is there trying to put it in.

It was the sort of ball a penalty-box predator like Billy Sharp would have relished.

Derby County manager Wayne Rooney speaking to BBC Radio Derby:

    "It's a sad day.

"I'm sad, disappointed, upset, frustrated, but proud.

"I think the effort the lads and the staff have put in to try and galvanise the squad and the club, it's been a lot of work put in.

"I've been in football a long time as a player and now in management and to see that reaction when a club's been relegated, I've never seen it.

"So the fans know what everyone's trying to do here and it's a weird feeling."

As these sides probe in search of a goal, here's how manager Wayne Rooney has reacted to Derby County being relegated to League One.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21 mins

    Bristol City 0-0 Sheffield United

No complaints about this one for Chris Basham.

Han-Noah Massengo looks to get away until he is unceremoniously taken out by Basham. A yellow card all day long.
