The next four days are huge for Giovanni van Bronckhorst. He has to win one of these games - either tonight or against Celtic on Sunday. If push comes to shove, I think Rangers fans would rather get through tonight. How often does a European semi-final happen? There are worse teams you can play in a European semi-final than Leipzig. There are a lot of eyes on Van Bronckhorst. If he fails to win either or both of these games, he is going to come under a lot of pressure.

  6. Pre-match stats, anyone?published at 19:55 British Summer Time 14 April 2022

    Rangers v Braga (0-1 agg)

    • Rangers midfielder Aaron Ramsey has scored six goals in 12 starts in the Europa League, all for Arsenal between 2018 and 2019 - his last home start in the competition saw him net the opener against Napoli in the quarter-finals in 2018-19.
    • In the first leg, Rangers failed to direct a single shot on target in a major European game for the first time since November 2009, against Stuttgart in the Champions League.
    • Braga have progressed from their previous nine ties in the Uefa Cup/Europa League when winning the first leg, with eight of those previous nine wins coming in home matches.
    • Braga have played more two-legged major European knockout ties without being eliminated after winning the first leg than any other team in history.
    • The first leg was the third meeting between these two sides in Europe, and the first time Rangers were defeated by Braga, having won the previous two meetings in 2019-20.
    • It was also was the ninth time Rangers have been defeated in the first leg of a knockout tie in the Uefa Cup/Europa League, advancing in two of the previous three such instances.

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst tells BT Sport: "We have to score so we have to make sure we create a lot of chances.

"When you want to score goals you have to be pushing forward. We want to start on the front foot and play with good intensity.

"We have to give everything to make sure we make it into the semi-final."

Gers fans, do you remember the last time you were at this stage of European competition?

Of course you do, your side made it all the way to the Uefa Cup final that season in 2008 under legendary boss Walter Smith.

The Ibrox side also came up against Portuguese opposition in the quarter-final that campaign.

After a goalless draw at Ibrox against Sporting Lisbon, goals from Jean-Claude Darcheville and Steven Whittaker booked a last-four place.

Written in the stars this evening, perhaps?

  13. What did we learn from Braga?published at 19:37 British Summer Time 14 April 2022

    Rangers v Braga (0-1 agg)

While Rangers weren't at their best in Braga, Carlos Carvalhal's young team showed their promise in an impressive display and could argue they're unfortunate not to be taking a bigger lead to Ibrox.

Tonight's visitors made it four wins on the bounce with a 1-0 victory at Vizela on Sunday.

Winger Iuri Medeiros' 10th goal of the season sealed the three points for Braga, who played the second half with 10 men after Vitor Oliveira's red card.

That result means Carvalhal's men are nine points clear in fourth spot in the Premeira Liga, with only Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and leaders Porto above them.

If Rangers are to make it through, it looks like it'll be Bundesliga opposition again.

Earlier today, Rangers were hit with a £30,000 fine from Uefa for the behaviour of their travelling support in Belgrade.

The Ibrox side must pay compensation to Red Star Belgrade following “acts of damage” to the Serbians’ stadium following the Europa League clash last month.

The Scottish side have also been fined for “throwing of objects” at the second leg, which Rangers lost 2-1 as they progressed to the quarter-finals on aggregate.

    Rangers v Braga (0-1 agg)

If there's someone in that Rangers dressing room that knows a thing about big games and big occasions, it's Juventus loanee Aaron Ramsey, who starts for the home side tonight.

"We're in the quarter-final of the Europa League so it's huge for us," the midfielder said.

"I would love to go all the way and win this competition, as will all the other players and the fans. I'm sure we can make this a special campaign.

"I came here to win. There is pressure on you here. I've been in clubs under this kind of pressure before and that's what I enjoy."

  19. 'We will play without fear' - Carvalhalpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 14 April 2022

    Rangers v Braga (0-1 agg)

Focus will be on Braga's youngsters to see how they cope with a raucous Ibrox, but manager Carlos Carvalhal has ordered his players to relish the challenge.

"I am absolutely sure we will play with personality and without any fear," the ex-Swansea boss said. "We know it will be difficult, we are sure about that.

"But we will turn the environment and try to make it positive to us for motivation.

"We will not defend, we are a team that plays all the time to try to win, with a big respect to Rangers because they are a very good team, a strong team."

I felt Fashion Sakala was the wrong choice in the first leg. I don't think he has enough guile or maturity to understand how to play through the middle and link play. It was harsh to leave Kemar Roofe out of it. If an Old Firm derby passes you by, as it did for Roofe, you can't avoid criticism, but he should have played from the start on Thursday. For a few weeks he has cut a frustrated figure. He won't feel as much pressure to deliver having scored a hat-trick on Sunday. He has got to turn up tonight.
