Pedro Martínez Losa tells BBC Scotland: “The result today is about qualifying but it’s also about the bigger picture. The fact we’re disappointed today with a 2-0 loss means something.

“We improve more as we have time to work on little bits and have time to work on preparing for our opponents and to make sure the girls understand what it means to compete at the highest levels.

“We are looking to inspire girls, families and fans — not just girls — to follow us and feel proud of what we produce and to qualify for major tournaments.

“I think we miss a little more confidence on the ball and some patience to better set up tracking situations. But I understand the player’s effort was limiting that ability today too.

"The energy you can see today in the stadium today is something that you can't describe and hopefully we get the results in our next two games."

Scotland put in a resilient and much-improved performance despite another defeat by Spain in Women's World Cup qualifying.

Beaten 8-0 in the reverse fixture, Pedro Martinez Losa's side competed well but struggled to create against an accomplished Spain side.

Jennifer Hermoso scored in each half to seal top spot in Group B and a place at next summer's World Cup for Spain.

Scotland remain second in a play-off position with two games remaining.

While an encouraging night on the park at a rain-soaked Hampden, 7,804 watched from the stands, a record for a home competitive match for the women's side.

Scotland fall to defeat, but it's a 90 minutes that will offer much encouragement to manager Pedro Martinez Losa.

They had lost in 8-0 in Seville in November, but this time they were more organised, more aggressive, and defender gallantly.

But a cheap penalty, and a fine Jenni Hermoso finish, keeps up Spain's 100% record in Group B, and confirms their qualification for next summer's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Scotland make a double change for the final five minutes.

Lucy Graham and Jane Ross come on for Martha Thomas and Sam Kerr.

Martha Thomas gets into the box but has no options. She does well to keep a hold of the ball and it eventually ends up at on the other wing with Lana Clelland, but her cross is cut out.

The crowd has been announced as 7,804, which is the biggest for a competitive home Scotland game.
